I think it was a good idea to not have Tails and Knuckles in the first movie, but to introduce them in the second one. This enabled them to establish the concept in the first movie and give us a little bit of Sonic's backstory and internal conflict. The second movie then introduced Tails and Knuckles and also started going into the lore of the world they're building.
And now with the third movie, we're getting Shadow, the character that was created in order for Sonic to meet his match in terms of abilities. So once again we're seeing a situation where the story is advancing and new characters are coming in that look different and act different. So this gradual inclusion of more and more characters is actually a really smart move.

At the very end of the season there's a seemingly throw away line about an alien back in 1974 "but they weren't red" if you know Shadow's story you know why it being 50 years ago is important

I wonder if there'll be a scene with Shadow in the past running through a bowling alley to get away from government agents.
