Exactly! I learned Ktulu by ear, and I've alwayes played it closer to the nut, so now I'm gonna have to go back an re-learn it this way, since it sounds SO much better and is, undoubtedly, the actual way that they played it on the album.
We would have all sounded like clones. The old school way we learned guitar gave us our own style, and got us excited when we stumbled upon that "key" chord we were trying to figure out. Now it's pretty much handed to players. You can't develop your ear that way. 😉👍
"The Thing That Should Not Be" is actually played on a guitar tuned to D Standard, a whole step down, just like "Sad But True". Metallica didn't use drop tunings until the "Load" era. ("The God That Failed" was in Eb). GREAT run-through though!
David.. My dude.. I have to say, I was not expecting such revelation and insight from a lesson on Metallica. When you went up the Aeolian to execute the notes of the scale and various chords it not only sounded killer, it was *insert explosion sound 🤯! This one is full of ideas and combinations that I really needed to get a grasp on. Just ascending the notes per string will get the brain into the game. Thanks so much man! How long is you’re waiting list for lessons?? 😎🤘🏻🙏🏻 And agreed that Master is THE album. Hell, between my friends and I, we probably wore out at least 20-30 cassettes when it came out. Love the way you are able to pull out a couple of unique things these players are doing and present it....it's so refreshing to see and hear something presented this way ....and really this is a lifetime of learning....some of these riffs or chords or patterns were really difficult to figure out back in the day...I can't tell you how many turntables and cassettes I destroyed figuring out some of this stuff...such a cool channel
Love these "Chords of..." I first learned these so called upside down power chords as a young player from Van Halen's "Feel Your Love Tonight" Clearly he did not invent this, but was my first time learning them. Keep up the great work!

Wow this guys lessons are the best on the internet. Such a useful concept. I do this all the time with the diatonic scale/modes with thirds and triads I just dont use the open string above I use all the higher strings :/
I remember seeing Metallica open up for Ozzy on his Ultimate Sin tour here in Chicago at the UIC pavilion. I remember the Power those guys had and just totally blew Ozzy away at that show. In ozzys defense Jake was drinking so much Royal Crown that he could not finish the show.He came out and said he was sorry and Jake had to be rushed to the hospital. I was a bit upset at Jake , but got over it. Thank you for your lessons they are really becoming addictive and are part of my daily rituals. I even think the wife if getting Jealous.I'm going to revisit my Metallica . Thanx !!

Hey David really interesting lesson. I might be off in my theory knowledge here, but I was trying to follow along with your example on the open 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings starting with a D5. The diatonic pattern as I know for Aeolian it is min, dim, maj, min, min, maj, maj. It seems in the progression you make the 7th degree min instead of maj. Can you explain what I'm missing here. Thanks as always.
Hey! Thanks for watching and for this question too! The main thing to remember here is we're not dealing with full triads - we're really just stacking diads with a droning open string (in this case D). So while I used the natural minor (Aeolian) scale to map out the fretboard, we're not really following full chord construction concepts with this idea. Look at the first chord - D5 (there's a D-A-D on the neck). The next partial chord is Bb/D (with D-Bd-D performed on the neck). Then it's C/D - with D-C-E on the neck (and so on). So, while the notes we're stacking to create these chords came directly from Aeolian, we're not really creating full chords here - it's just partial and implied chords. Your head is in the right place, but there aren't enough notes (for most of these chords) to build proper triads. We're really just mining the whole two-note diad concept, but with a droning open string below the diads. Partial and implied chords are a big part of metal's sound. I hope this makes sense!
I always dug Load and ReLoad, some great riffs on those albums and I dig the last 2 they came out with as well as there whole catalog, but yea Master is the pinnacle album for me as well.
My understanding is you are to never utter the name that shall not be said, aloud. Now when I think of Master of Puppets, I think of the van scene in Old School. Thanks for all the awesome videos!
Thanks so much for bringing back those memories David. Master of Puppets is my favorite as well and was a big lesson on the natural minor scale for me. It's still big part of my playing that i have to force myself away from it and try different modes. Just one question. What amp are you using for these videos? I love the tone you're getting at that low volume. My custom built 50 and 100 what tube amps are just not good for low volume practicing.

I call those Backward chords, inverted. Us 80's players on here use them a lot I'm sure 😀👍. Thank God you are not charging for these lessons, I probably couldn't afford them, hahaha 😝. As always, great job,. I find it fitting that October is metal month, also my birthday month, (10/05/1966) but we won't go into the age thing here!

Excellent as always, but I’m 100% sure Thing That Should Not is in D standard. An ancient issue of guitar world, I think from 2006, had a lesson from Kirk, and it’s most definitely in that tuning

I don't mind Load/Reload either. I actually prefer those albums over everything they've released after that(besides Garage Inc.) I know they returned to making thrashier music since then but there seems something forced about those records where the Load albums are solid hard rock and you can tell James heart was into making those. I may even prefer them over TBA at this point. Nothing compares to their 80's material though. All the hours I've listened to Metallica, the first 4 records probably take up 95 percent of the total listening time. When I decide to listen to them today not much has changed in the last 30 years. I'll always love their 80's material and go back to those. They set an impossible bar to continue to live up to.

I still am a HUGE FAN of “Justice,” possibly because “One” was 1 of the first 2 songs I ever learned, along with GN’R’s “Sweet Child!” Anyway, Master of Puppets & In Justice For (Jason) LoL are the 2 albums that Metallica are to me! Though I have fond memories of being 15, 16 & loving “Most of” the Black Album, though not a big fan of “Enter Sandman!” Sorry So Long, Great vid! Cheers

I see what you're saying here, but those two chords are B minor to B Major. In theory, a B minor chord has the notes B-D-F# and B Major has B-D#-F#. If you notice the spelling of those two shapes they're exactly B-D-F# (B minor) and B-D#-F# (B major). It's also toying with harmonic minor during that section. The B minor chord is the "regular" v chord (in E minor), so when it shifts to B major (making it a major V chord), it's technically signaling a harmonic minor scale/tonality - which gives it that really dark sound when it shifts. Super cool slight-of-hand from the mighty Metallica. : )

I thought that Cliff was a learned musician, as well, and always suspected that once he started writing in Metallica, his knowledge influenced and rubbed off on everyone else (James especially).
Yeah, moving basic power chords while keeping some open strings, that totally smells "let's try this shit out and see how it sounds". It's funny to see that 30 years later now that we've had proper music training. Every guitar players start writing the same way... and they don't all become Metallica 😂
Um...I explained this in the video. That's also why I was using finger quotes when I mentioned "reverse power chords" - as that is a common nickname people have given these chords. They're just diads and triads (as I mentioned).

I would say that the 4th chord in Orion is not a B major but an Eb minor. Great video!
Eb minor wouldn't contain a B natural note, rather it would have a Bb, so in this instance B major is the correct chord

I totally agree and thought the same thing. They probably had no idea what these chords were called, just stumbled upon and went for it!
I thought that Cliff was a learned musician, as well, and always suspected that once he started writing in Metallica, his knowledge influenced and rubbed off on everyone else (James especially).
Yeah, moving basic power chords while keeping some open strings, that totally smells "let's try this shit out and see how it sounds". It's funny to see that 30 years later now that we've had proper music training. Every guitar players start writing the same way... and they don't all become Metallica 😂

That's also why I was using finger quotes when I mentioned "reverse power chords" - as that is a common nickname people have given these chords.
They're just diads and triads (as I mentioned).
