He sorta whiffed on the call re: McDonald's goal... Hewitt, Gallivan, the Cole .. Cole gets a lot of GOAT love because he's the voice most of the social network generation remembers
A truly once in a lifetime year for Lanny McDonald or any player for that matter , as he got his 1000th point , his 500th goal , scored the winning goal in the Stanley Cup final and a Stanley Cup championship all in one year .... then retired from professional hockey .....truly a fairy tale ending to a brilliant playing career .... ..... and he was official closer at the Calgary Stampede in July of 1989 and I met him and got a sweat shirt signed by him ..............
It is all beautifully tied together in the end. What an amazing series of fortunate events. You can see how sweet the moment is in pictures of him holding the cup. The relief. Finally....
I am a huge CALGARY FLAMES fan from HUNGARY. I started follow icehockey when 1989-90 season started. Buy that time I didn't know that Flames just won the Stanley Cup just months ago. Why I choosen Calgary Flames? First of the logo is just the best I've ever seen. And then Calgary could beat San Jose Sharks almost every game but lost agains other teams. In 2004 when Flames played Stanley Cup final against Tampa Bay Lightning I watched all the games howaver it was 2am. I was shocked and very sad that couldn't win the Cup again. I am waiting for the nex time. GO FLAMES GO!!!
"Here comes the siren; and here come the Flames!" That's the perfect way to say that the Flames are the Stanley Cup champions. Because, the siren could be thought of as the siren of a fire truck.
Only time the Canadiens lost the final at the Forum. The only other time a team other than the Canadiens won the final at the Forum was in 1928 when the Rangers beat the Maroons.
Funny that of all teams, it was the RANGERS who won a cup in Montreal. The Forum was a nightmare for the Rangers throughout their entire existence! I was so happy when it was torn down! LOL! Actually, I wasn't. It was a traditional place like Maple Leaf Gardens, Boston Garden, etc. But still...
Thats right. The way I see it is with the Edmonton Coilers dominating the late 80's and Cgy winning in 89 followed by Montreal winning in 93 THEN bettman comes to power and whos in the finals the following year? oh right a Canadian city vs the big apple, I think bettman was brought in to increase ratings in the U.S. I believe hockey was about to die in the united states at that point as most success was recieved by Canadian teams. Messier chopping down on Linden while he was down/all the horrible calls in that series. NYC 1940- drought. The NHL wanted to broaden its horizens by having the biggest U.S market win the stanley cup after 54 years. Sucks cause my team got the shit end of the stick. None the less I just wanna see Canadian teams succeed, I love the rivalry but I think all that hate towards Vancouver is a bunch of bullcrap. Bring the cup home boys! ....maybe in 10 years:(
bullshit. I hate the flames with a passion, but I will admit, that cup was theres in 04. What a horrible call. If that was Vancouver, the city would riot and all hell would break loose.
Vernon deserves to be in there. He's currently the winning-nest eligible goaltender to not be in the HOF. Oh, and let's threw out the fact that he won two cups... I agree whole heartedly, and have thought this for years.
Man 1989 Flames were unbelievably stacked Joe Mullen - HOF Doug Gilmour - HOF Joe Nieuwendyk - HOF Al MacInnis - HOF Lanny MacDonald - HOF Gary Roberts - Should be in the HOF Joel Otto - Should be in the HOF Theo Fleury - Should be in the HOF Stu Grimson Rob Ramage Mike Vernon - Should be in the HOF If they kept that team together they coulda been a dynasty.
as a die hard Nucks fan, this video makes me jealous as fuck. Look forward to the Van/Cgy rivalry to get heated up again though, Flames with all that young talent and Vancouver with quite a bit of young talent coming up the ranks. Sedins are old but I think when Boeser, Demko and the rest of our prospects develop we will get to see super exciting hockey games between Van and Cgy. GO CANADA GO!
Eric Wright As a person who lives in Calgary (I am a Hawks fan though) nothing is more intense then the rivalry between Calgary and Vancouver. Great games between the two!
That Flames team in the late 80's and early 80's including the 1989 Championship team is so underrated. Here in the US, that team got almost no media mention at all. Did not help in this period, this Cup Final was no where to be found on then Big 3 networks i.e CBS, NBC or ABC or even on then 2nd tier networks and national sports channels such as then brand new Fox Network or ESPN. The Habs and Oilers teams of this era were internationally known and even got some American sports media attention. Too bad back then and even worst now, this very good '89 Flames team is basically forgotten at least here in the US as a Stanley Cup Winner.
Lanny McDonald and his iconic mustache accepting the cup is not forgotten by me, even though I'm a Rangers fan. Flames had a great team in '89. Well deserved cup win!
My Dad, RIP, hi-fived his right hand into a bloody, pulpy mess on this night from laying so many hi-fives on Electric Avenue in Cowtown. There are 5 players from this incarnation of the Flames who are in the Hall of Fame so far (Lanny, Mullen, Chopper, Killer and Nieuy). I think Mike Vernon deserves to get in; Gary Roberts and Fleury probably won't but they both carried Calgary in their time. Personally, I always liked Jamie Macoun - his open ice hits were text-book. Iggy HOF soon.
@EdMcStinko Fleury is marred in controversy and was a dirty player who almost single handedly ended Paul Kariyas career. Great team though so respect to that. The Lanny McDonald gaol and celebration was epic. Remember seeing it in the intro montage of HNIC back int he days with the Gretzky slapper over Vernon. Just classic.
Yeah Gilmour in 97 was nowhere near the player he was in 93 and 94 with the Leafs when he carried the team on his back. After the 1995 lockout, he wasn't the same player.
Forgot to mention, Claude Lemieux deprived Lanny McDonald of the status of having scored the game-winning goal in this game because Denis Morel is a putz. The Habs second goal was bullshit. Watch Lemieux take out Vernon's feet. Total bullshit.

too bad you traded your franchise d-man for his "character" issues. Donating 10 million to Montreal childrens hospital is not an issue with character, he is the studdliest D-man with a big heart and is younger than Weber. Weber is a beast though. I believe Canadiens cup hopes are just about over. The best Canadian match ups are gonna be in the west coast, Mcdavid and the coilers, Johnny hockey/Monahan and the lames, Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, Jake Virtanen with the Nucks. No more european hockey although it was a blessing watching the twins for 15 years.
Flames will win the stanley cup this year the announcer will say THE FLAMES ARE THE 2012 STANLY CUP CAMPIONS ps im a red wings fan oh ya and canucks stop acting like your so good you cant win a cup
"Here comes the siren, here come the Flames!"
Rest in peace and power Mr. Bob Cole!
You were the voice of hockey for my generation!

He didn’t score the winning goal, Gilmour did

1989 was the golden year for the Calgary flames. We almost made it to a second cup in 2004 but maybe one day we can do it this year
WE'RE DOING IT
@@johnbean2596this aged well.
So happy for the Flames! Great game, gotta love Gilmour and Vernon!!
Hey Ricky!
Hey Quin!! Long time no talk! How are you?
+Ricky J Sports I'm not bad!
Awesome clip from a terrific series. Gosh the Flames had so much talent that year; five HoF players, it's rotten Vernon hasn't made it six.
10 years later, Vernon's finally getting inducted.
Thanks for the great footage
GO FLAMES GO 🥅🏒🔥
We should have taken it in 2004...

Too bad Bettman ruined it
Whether philly or tampa was in it they woulda lost

I went out to bars in Toronto for every game of the Finals and everyone was behind the Flames. They were robbed.

He also won the Conn Smythe in '97!!
So glad Gilmour got 1 probably one of the hardest working players of all time.
He actually got 2, including the game winning goal - he was a huge key to that win
Those old Flame jerseys were absolute fire.
min 3:05 Look at Lanny. What a class act. Asks for Pepper and Hunter to join him, seasoned vets from the Battle of Alberta '86 days.
Woo!!! Let's go Flames🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Let's make this happen again only lets let Gio hold the cup!!!!🔥🔥🔥
Yeah it’s to late for him now

Joe Mullen - HOF

Al MacInnis - HOF

Joel Otto - Should be in the HOF
Theo Fleury - Should be in the HOF

The last all-Canadian Stanley Cup Final to date.
Great series. That brought back a lot of memories.
those two teams were dominant throughout the year. loads of talent on that flames team.
Best Stanley cup ever
The trade to get Gilmour from St. Louis was the final piece to the puzzle.

TheRedSpringbok why r u a hawks fan if u live in CGY
Eric Natusch Because I have liked the team since I was a kid? lol. Doesn't matter what city I am from to me.
Hated to see my Habs lose, but happy for Lanny. Good times. All Canadian final.
I will never forget this. 🔥
Otto was a centre, wasn't he? Imagine having Gilmour, Nieuwendyk and Otto up the middle. Stacked! Loooool.
Only Lanny McDonald can lead the flames to the Stanley Cup. What a legend.
GO FLAMES GO!Great season!
It gets worse

Fook, this was AWESOME!!!
Going golfing today. Needed some hype
Compared to the size of goalies now, lol, Vernon is so tiny in net! Love it!

Flames first and only cup and last time 2 Canadian based teams faced off in the finals
Did they also celebrate in Atlanta when the Flames won?
This Flame team is insane, I count at least 5 HOFers, and maybe Suter/Loob/Vernon too, not sure. Maybe Fleury, has he been nominated?
🚨🔥GO FLAMES GO🔥🚨

Cliff fletcher looked old in 1989 he must be real old now and he still works for the leafs
Yeah Gilmour in 97 was nowhere near the player he was in 93 and 94 with the Leafs when he carried the team on his back. After the 1995 lockout, he wasn't the same player.
That Assist @2:14 was immaculate!
What an epic end of career for Lannny McDonald.
WooHoo Flames Win!!!
A lot of future NJ Devils on that ice. Six
Flames rule
Yeah they do
Yep
For 1 year. Guess why the flames are mad at a woman?? Cause the flames have only 1 cup...

I don't care that your comment was 7 years ago. It was true then and it's true now.

The 1989 Calgary Flames were lot like the 1986 Montreal Canadians & The.1989 Montreal Canadians we're a lot like the 1986 Calgary Flames
I knew it was him, but I wasn't sure at first.
great battle
That's 1, 4 to go.
R.I.P.: Pat Burns
Ramage? Wasn't he a St. Louis Blue in '86? :/
Can somebody explain to me about the face on the side of the red line 0:35
Dawson Smith I think it went out. I think back then if the puck went out of play it was faced off right where it went out. Just a guess
The league was so biased in favor of the Habs back in the day
FLAMES!!!
Yea
2004 flames were a better team. Kipper in his prime was a way better goaltender than Vernon was in my opinion.
they won the cup in 04. That was a bullshit call and this is coming from a Canucks fan.
came close in 2004. It was that goal from Genllias that didn't count. dispointing call for sure
I watched that whole game live in Calgary, I hate Tampa now because of that game.
WOOOOOO GO FLAMES GO
he should be , he always had a very high p.p.g. avg
... and they got swept, maybe next year :/
Woo go flames go
GO FLAMES
