not an owl city fan, but this guy is pretty talented. not only vocally, but he's a pretty good guitar player, and im guessing he can play keyboard too.

You people who say he is using auto tune in this live performance have a deaf ear and have no right to judge music. There are many times where he/they are off pitch slightly, which is natural because no one is perfect. Also where someone said at 1:55 it was obvious there was auto tune is also wrong. The auto tune they think they hear is the harmony of the ladies voice with the organ sound of her electric piano, simple as that. Some people are just musically deaf and dumb it's really sad..... I think he did a pretty good job, he was abviously tense and nervous but still a job well done despite some errors. I really enjoyed this and compared to the auto tuned album this sounds better in my opinion.

It's incredible how much Adam's singing has gotten better over the past years. When I watch older videos like this of him singing live, his voice is a little shaky and he sings some notes a bit off-key. But when I watch newer videos from concerts, his voice is confident and he sings every note in tune. Search for "How I Became the Sea - Owl City Live" by Moosteen. His voice is perfection.
Yeah he said he really bad stage fright. But he is still so kind! The world doesn't deserve him. Btw, those saying he uses auto-tune... He won't be using auto-tune in Heaven! #DontGiveUpAdam

this is a really good live vocal performance, you are probably just used to hearing singers lip sync, its very hard to sound like the cd in this situation and he did a great job

I love the fact that he makes vocal mistakes - it's encouraging to others who aren't that great that you can do well even if you aren't absolutely perfect. And it's a pretty good performance anyway...
He dosent sound like the studio recorded songs, but he still has a decent enough voice to go on stage, i love his voice live. Owl city is still my number 1.
I love this interpretation by Adam. The most perfect thing that a Human can do its an imperfect thing because we are not perfect and its just great to hear how peculiar his voice is, actually i love it, its joyful and happy, he's just awesome! :)
i think adam is really good live cause he seems more able to give more emotion to the song and he doesnt sound terrible when he's doing it, He seems really nervous up there, and maybe its because it's not just a normal concert where he can make mistakes and let the audience join in. I think he sounds absolutely great! :)
What you're watching here is a guy that had just exploded out of nowhere MN with a #1 song & no stage experience. He had to quickly put a group together & start performing because the record co he signed with said so, because fans were screaming for it! No they don't sound good here & their inexperience is obvious + sound issues, but they got better & are now a great live act ! 👍🏻
C'mon folks, I've been in the music business for 20 years, and I can tell you that live performances are almost NEVER gonna be as perfect as the recording. That's because in the studio, they can record each instrument and voice one at a time over and over again under acoustically controlled conditions until they get the BEST take from each performer. Then they put them all together and tweak the levels for a perfect mix. That's why it isn't as good live.
+Ander TGA When Adam first started Owl City his vocals weren't as well rounded as they are now. This video is from 2009 after the release of Ocean Eyes, which is Adam's second full album. After Ocean Eyes came ATBAB (2011) and that is when his voice has changed for the better. He is a much better singer now, I've seen it first hand by going to his shows. I've seen him play live in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2015. The ATBAB was a HUGE show in comparison to the first time he was touring in 2009. Giant stage, fantastic light show, and a lot more instruments used in unique ways that you could only experience live. Adam really knows how to put on a great show and his stage presence is on point. He's not only a better singer now than he was when he first started, he also can play the guitar, drums, keyboard, and piano. To me that shows major talent. I can't do any of those things. I have great respect for him as an artist. Not many artists can do all the things Adam does. Shoot, a lot of popular artists don't even write their own lyrics! Live from LA is his only live performance that has been recorded and is a good representation of his talent. That was from his ATBAB tour.
The best version of Fireflies by a long shot. Stripped down to the bare essential. Musicians playing real instruments? Yeah and the singer is somehow singing Without Autotune! I don't know how all of these things can be true. A perfect storm with power to spare.

This is far better than what I expected seeing how much production went into the studio voice. He's got quite a nice tone to his voice, but its impossible for any human to sound like he did on the studio version.

Yes, just so everyone knows, this is autotuned. That doesn't mean he "needs" it, it's just a stylistic thing. You'd be surprised at how many artists use autotune live (not to mention compressors, equalizers, reverbs, samples, etc).
Really like this song. He was definitely lipsyncing in that other video on the Vevo channel, but this one is him. Thanks for posting. The drummer is a cutie, btw.
@NLVRecords Adam Young does not use autotune. He uses something very similar, called melodyne, which is another pitch correction utility. The differences is that you get a lot more options and that you are able to pitch correct certain notes and edit the drift. It sounds much less robotic than autotune.
