- 30 km from Mardin. Dara, located in the Oğuz Village to the southeast, is the most magnificent of the ancient settlements in the region. It is unknown when the city, whose ancient name was Anastasiopolis, was founded. Dara has been one of the most important trade centers of Mesopotamia for centuries. The city witnessed the war between Persian Emperor Darius and Alexander the Great.
Although Dara is a little known ancient settlement in our country and in the world, it is described as the Ephesus of Mardin, the east, even Mesopotamia by those who have visited and admired it. Right adjacent to the ancient city of Dara are the ruins of the world's first water dam. Dara is an important settlement, as it is located on the Silk Road that crosses Mardin from the beginning to the end. It is believed that the remains unearthed in the archaeological excavations here belong to the world's first water dam.
The city of Dara, which consists of structures carved into the rock, is spread over a wide area with its surroundings. The rock tombs in the east of Dara extend to Kuruçay. The city, whose perimeter is protected by a wall of 4 km, has two gates opening to the south and north. The inner castle was built on the upper plain of the 50-meter-high hill in the north of the city.
Remains of churches, palaces, bazaars, dungeons, armory, cisterns and water dams can still be seen in the city. In the north of the village, a magnificent water dam was built by carving the rocks descending to the south. This dam contains water even today. In addition, cave houses dating back to the Late Roman period are found around the village.
Since Dara Ancient City is free, there is no need for a museum card. You can go and visit completely free of charge. We did not pay an entrance fee for the Dara Ancient City trip on October 16, 2020. Whatever falls out of your heart for the guide ...
