Gorillaz - Humanz ALBUM REVIEW

- Listen: • Gorillaz - Saturnz Bar...
Humanz has its share of strong performances and musical highlights, but all too often its guests are misplaced or poorly utilized and the songwriting/production just isn't up to the Gorillaz standard.

Over 15 minutes? It must be a 10/10! Wait a minute, red flannel.
He was wearing a red flannel in his Daft Punk "Random Access Memories" review, and he gave that a 8/10.
DeeGeeOhThree 3
Exactly, you had to look through 3 years of album reviews before you could find a positive grade for the red flannel.

Humanz ft. gorillaz
PeacefulHaley yes
I agree
PeacefulHaley i suppose
and everyone in here doesnt know what gorillaz is about...
ThePapanoob Gorillaz is experimental, not let other people do it for us.
The best part about Humanz for me is the fact that I ate a pepperoni roll while listening to it.
It was such a good pepperoni roll and whenever I hear songs from Humanz I am reminded of it.
Thank you Humanz, for reminding me of how good that pepperoni roll was.
This is probably the best comment I have ever read
The best review
So for that reason, Im gonna have to give it a strong 9 to a light 10

the first thing I noticed on this album was the lack of the catchy bass lines
gwubwub completely agree, there was no Murdoc, no real instruments. It all sounded like it had been made by a kid with his laptop in his bedroom.
*cough* you mean an ipad?
Alex well, a lot of electronic music is digital, but some are made from legit analog synthesizers, but they're still all musical instruments. but yeah, there is a disturbing lack of any guitars or catchy bass lines on this album. I could only name, like, 4 with good bass lines, where in past albums, nearly every song had an amazing or iconic bass line.
I dunno, Andromeda, Let Me Out, Saturn Barz, and the Apprentice all have pretty sick bass lines in my opinion.
Honestly, I thought the Apprentice was all around just a sick track. I was disappointing that Needledrop didn't see how dope it was.
Saturz Barz bass line is a note per bar, hardly sick. I mean, it goes well withe rest of the song, but it's definitely in the back seat.
To be brutally honest, Humanz is like a party with Murdock and 2D but they've already left. So you're stuck there with all their weird friends who are already half drunk. Every conversation you get into is either pretentious or dull. You leave the party irritated and waiting for the next album. 6/10
nah that's just cause the were too many songs. filter some of them out and you'll get some of the best Gorillaz songs. this album is a basic example of why you put quality over quantity
BTW Plastic Beach> Demon Days for all you nostalgic fanboys crying over how their older shit was better
Luksprs great description, consistent idea, not to much, not to less, 8/10
And Noodle and Russel didn't even bother showing up
You literally copied that from a Rotten Tomatoes review I JUST read. Fucking trash #Exposed
www.rottentomatoes.com/m/nerdland_2016/
Luksprs russle didn't want to show up, and they didn't want to bother inviting noodle
I don't like how Jamie Hewlett's work is being less and less prominent. There's always a lot of focus on Damon Albarn, which is understandable, but the visuals is the other 50% of what makes Gorillaz cool. 50% is a lot. Don't reduce that.
Exactly.
What really ticks me off is the fact that they use the terrible Gmod Puppet Gorillaz for interviews and music videos. I understand that animation is expensive and all, but it just looks cheap and lazy
less and less? he made a lot of shit in plastic beach.
I agree Jamie Hewlett's work was almost completely what made the gorillaz so appealing to me
He did so many great things for plastic beach and this time they had that whole spirit house thing.
Give it time. Theres a TV show planned for 2018 that will be in the same art style as Saturns Bars. So theyre going light on it now since all the animation budget is going there.
I'm pretty sure Russel is still at the bottom of the ocean because almost every single track has a boring ass machine drum beat
soli wray so the one we have could be Cyborg Russel lol
LOL imagining that makes me crack up
soli wray and he's asleep in the strobelite vid
Welcome to the world of modern rap tracks. It's starting to spread.
Murdoc is the drum machine guy. Though, a lack of physical drums can harm a song's base line and percussion.
I can't wait to find out what I think about this album

I think "FEAT." would be a better album title, TBH.
Humanz with the Humans being a bigger focus then the Gorillaz. So I believe the Album was aptly named.

Loris Bauer huh. that actually works.
Loris Bauer damon is not in this much
Mr Krabs You know that the animator is Jamie Hewlett and the singer is Damon Albarn?
Or you're just trolling.
Loris Bauer I think he means since the focus tends to be more on the
guest singers there was less of Damon's singing than in other albums like in the fall or demon days.

Worst part of Humanz: It lost it’s core message; it’s less about the music and more about the musicians
@Dork Whoop yes!! Reject False Icons died when the collaborstors of Humanz were announced
Paul true true
It's about humans if you will.
What was the core message to begin with?
@@Trashheapcuntspawn Reject False Icons. Enjoy the music, don't worship or idolize the artist. Alborn and Hewlett made the Gorillaz because of the state of MTV, where it was all about the artists, not the music. So they created a virtual band because "no one cares where the music would actually come from".
The video for Andromeda was the audio release, not the official music video.

Andromeda, Charger, and Ascension are pretty great imo

I really appreciate how Anthony is not caving in to the audience. I personally disagree, on first listen it was okay. But when I actually started listening and jamming to it rather than background music, I started to enjoy it a lot. The more I listen, the more I enjoy it. Now I don't know the standard edition vs the deluxe, but the deluxe is awesome.
X- Ray Anthony tries very, very, very hard to do that. It isn't caving, opinions are subjective. It's basic and generic pandering to those who would consider him edgy. "Busiest music critic" just means most common to rage against. His explanation of what Gorillaz is by saying it isn't Damon is from the freaking moon. Every song and album is fundamentally Damon. Just because he can't see it doesn't take away from his musical talent and decision making.
I'm sorry, I've seen some of the guy's videos of other music I love, but the guy is a horrible reviewer. His opinions are from his first time listening. It is a well known fact that some music needs it's time to grow on you. He shits on almost everything and is pretty closed minded. At first I also wassen't the biggest fan of this album, but now after listening to it multiple times I actually love it.
yeah is very inmersive, very good album.
X- Ray it does grow on you..like a lot of Gorillaz. Has to get in your head a little.
Anthony never caves. I've known him since he lived on Julie Coolie Court. Stubborn as a damn mule.

I immediately thought after my first listen "This has too much Damon and not enough Murdoc". there's no grittiness, no evil or dark moments that I'm used to, even plastic beach made me feel uncomfortable in a way that I felt like I was being put into another world where I wouldn't survive. I still like a lot of the tracks but yeah, bit lackluster
So true man!

Humanz didn't feel like a Gorillaz album. Granted, a mixtape feel isn't always the worst thing, but it's been SO LONG since we've seen anything new from this group so it was a bit of a letdown. I was overall disappointment that there wasn't any real instrumentation on this thing, it felt very "tossed together" musically, and the opening and closing of this album were just weak as hell. Plastic Beach, Demon Days or even the self titled debut all followed this formula and they felt extremely well thought out. Humanz drags on and on, almost beating you over the head with how advanced and formless the tracks are, kind of a reflection on Damon's incomprehensibility and loss of passion for the group's dynamics and sensibilities. There were only really 2-3 tracks on the album I actually enjoyed and the rest just felt like compost filler. Will we ever get back to the Demon Days era we all came to know and love? Time will only tell. But as for Humanz, I give it a 4/10.

I feel like the real problem is the lack of Jamie Hewlett. Like Gorillaz is 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel, not an angsty Damon Albarn. Yes, Gorillaz have always been political, but the messages were subtle. Take "O Green World" for example compared to "Let Me Out" where the censoring of names like Trump and Obama are obnoxious. Gorillaz have always had an eerie vibe about them, and this album seems to take that all away. It's called Humanz, after all.
Blackstardust
They censored their names on purpose. Its a comment on SJWs censoring the media.
Professor Gutnacht SJWS ARE GONNA TAKE OUR FROZEN PEACHES!
We are humanz
after all
Professor Gutnacht Whatever the reason may be behind censoring the names, the message behind it very obviously stands. It wasn't done tastefully either, and it comes off as annoying.
Blackstardust Thank you so much for making this reference, it has made my day

Jonny Salami because murdoc?
I've really only seen the not any genre thing said to people that said the album didn't sound like Gorrilaz specifically because it had such a heavy rap focus. i'd say that pointing out that they aren't a specific genre is a fairly reasonable defense considering how eclectic they've been in the past.
From a Gorillaz fanboy, I'm pretty bummed out by the 7 year wait to be so anticlimactic and mediocre.
From my experience I learned that waiting on something that long usually doesn't produce the best results
Well it's not all bad, The Avalanches made a great Gorillaz album last year :)
yeah but GTA is a franchised, flag ship video game and it still took longer for Humanz to be released than from 4 to 5. TPAB was only a year for production time and Blonde was the second commercial album Ocean made, which always holds a strong place in most artists work. Also those artists are just now making their peek, Demon Days is already over 10 years old. There are some artists like Radiohead who can just keep coming up with fresh ideas , but sometimes you dry up on creativity with a certain project.
yeah anticlimatic is the word that defines this album
My Bloody Valentine's third album was decent after a 22 year gap. And as I kinda mentioned before the new Avalanches album is about as good as the original after a 16 year gap. So it's not like it's impossible for a band to release something decent after a long break.
She's My Collar is the best thing to come out of the album. It's one of my favorite songs period. Kinda sad you didn't review it
The thing about this album is that its one of those "the more you listen, you more you like it" albums and I'm very pleased with the album in my opinion. 8/10 for me.
Squidward Tentacles I remember listening to plastic beach and not really like it, but after listening to it for while u really enjoy it
1 gorillaz song 13 featured tracks, its depressing
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett are the only gorillaz members and one of them isn't even involved in the music. everyone else has always been a feature on every album, on every song
Butthurt pretty much.
But these featured songs still sounded like Gorillaz.
Alec Petsche it has been like that for every Gorillaz album since Demon Days lmfao
no
Wow, okay. Gorillaz has for sure been my favorite band since I was like 12 (im 23 now), and I've loved everything they've come out with, and I absolutely LOVED this album (KEEP READING) after 3 times of listening. The first time there was maybe 5-6 tracks I genuinely enjoyed, then after a week they ALL(even forgettable tracks) got stuck in my head (sex murder party, shes my collar, hallelujah money etc), but after watching this, you really hit on some points that I did NOT realize because I'm too far up the Gorillaz ass lol. Even though I still love the album and MOST of the songs on there, I really have to say that I agree.
it just felt so weak to me. I guess this is a premium example of the fact that music is so subjective. I didn't like the album at all. And when one tries to critique it the only thing you get from other gorillaz fans is "you don't get it, it's experimental"
And I just feel as though the fans give gorillaz too much credit just because of the fact that they are gorillaz.
That's exactly what happened to me. I know what gorillaz is capable of. The quality in their music was amazing, so I obviously got hyped for this album. and like many others I was going to buy it because it was gorillaz, and nothing more than that. And I was so disappointed with the final quality of the album. The only song I like is hallellujah money, the one song everyone hated on when it came out :(
So you've basically brainwashed yourself to like this album. Heard it one time and i trust my sense in music. It was bad. If i have to listen to an album for a couple of times, before it get's okay, it really isn't.
Blister Monde Death Grips take multiple listens, and they aren't 'bad'
It always takes me a while to love an album, doesn't mean the album is trash it means I'm taking my time to appreciate all of the album. Obviously tracks like Saturn barz and andromeda are easy to like off first bat but other songs like alleluia money and momentz need to be fully appreciated more than once to be a favourite.
What is the new album is called Humanz because it wasn't meant to focus on the gorrilaz and more to focus on the artistic stylings and works of others who the band feel deserve more popularity?

@@AlectriXSharpness Your welcome.
It’s really easy to have too much/too little 2d, too much being demonstrated on The Now Now. Damon Albarn’s vocals work best when they’re inserted into chill parts of a song, and then the features can help bring life to the more emotional parts of a song. I think they struck the perfect balance in their song machine series, you’ll see what I mean.
Am I the only one who thinks andromeda is closest to how Gorillaz used to sound. I'm not one to compare their past to now but most of the songs in Humanz sound the same instrumentally
Andromeda is easily the strongest song.
Andromeda probably could've fit quite nicely on Plastic Beach.
Mr. DIABEETUS busted and blue does too
Mr. DIABEETUS agreed and busted and blue too, it's slow and calming like most of Plastic Beach song
Mr. DIABEETUS agreed andromeda is the only song I really like
Predictable rating, this album was clearly no where as good as the other records but some of the songs were still pretty enjoyable.

Anash nah
Josh Shuter Someone's salty today
Anash I really enjoyed acension, Saturn barz and Andromeda but plastic beach is so much better and consistently good
What's wrong with a predictable rating haha, it's a review not a movie plot
I completely agree in the sense of the entire album that Damon Albarn (Voice of 2-D) is not as present as a majority of the fans would like him to be. 2-D's vocals have always been special to all Gorillaz fans and its even a key factor in any Gorillaz album as to why many people are a fan in the first place. And since his vocals seem very absent, it is leaving many fans unfulfilled. Even on the songs where 2-D mostly takes over.. Damon feels rather distant and doesn't really expose the true range of what he and 2-D are really capable on a Gorillaz track. I feel like the featured artists on the album had more motivation for delivering a good performance than Damon, which is another issue on the album itself many of the featured artists to me felt unnecessary and very misplaced. It feels as though many artists were awkwardly placed on a track that just didn't belong, at least not for their usual music stylings. Some worked better than other. But then again, Gorillaz is very experimental so you cant really blame the album. This is just my opinion. And for the record, I don't hate the album. I rather like it. It took me a while to warm up to it and Ive grown to like a lot of the songs. But it definitely does not surpass their previous work. I think a lot of people would agree with that statement. :)
I completely agree. my only problems are not enough animation, not enough focus on the actual characters and yeah I really wished we heard more of 2-D ACTUALLY singing. not just talking into the mic. so many of the times he sings it comes off emotionless. some of them are perfect songs in my opinion but MORE 2-D!!!
Axl Gutierrez fantastic observation. Most of my favorite Gorillaz tracks are just Damon. I felt it was too much collaboration. But you can't expect more of the same and you can't demand your favorites only. It's his album, not yours, not mine. It definitely isn't superior, but it is clearly Gorillaz.
Axl Gutierrez I agree fully with what you said and I do miss having Damon as a major lead, but I felt like andromeda was the best song where he was one of the major leads and his part just made the whole song better and it gave us a look into the sadness Damon felt after losing two great people from his life.
Detachment is a major theme within the album it is a shame that the Duo played a large part in that with their work. Too much Liberal BS and too much bit-players, no real central guiding direction and theme, its like they say, you are just going up an elevator of different people's moments with nothing really gelling
i think gorillaz is just fine.... you guys are projecting damon into a place he doesn't want to be, gorillaz is not about damon is about music. and the album is freaking awesome (on a personal opinion not as great as demon days or plastic beach...but a great addition to them, and maybe in time as great as them)
the whole point of gorillaz is going against the mistification of the "rocker" damon and even noel gallagher (yeah noel fucking gallagher is on the guitar) are playing a second role and sometimes not even that they are on the back of the band to give place to the music.
I feel like The Fall had too much of just Damon Albarn, and Humanz had far too little Damon Albarn
that was the point though, 2d was separated from the band, you can even see it on the cover. it had story to it.
Nick Tiegs making it be the point doesn't mean it was a good decision. Just like if you made when you start a game and it doesn't start the point of the game, it doesn't make it good
the dude made the album on album on his ipad let him be
I read that The Fall is actually Damon's favorite album, totally get it, he worked hard on his IPad to make those songs lol

Another great review, totally agree. I was so excited for a new Gorillaz album and I still enjoy listening to it. But it just feels bland compared to their past work
Josh Lillie exactly, it's really saved by nostalgia, cus I've loved Gorillaz since I was a kid
This is a good way to put it for me. I like it, but it really doesn't have that kick previous albums had.
It felt exactly like Random Access Memories where i can get on board with some of the stuff, but really just feel disappointed.
Michael Ryerse fuuuuuuuck youuuuuu. RAM is a well put together, cohesive project with a theme and a cool sound to it, Humanz is just a loud mess. I fucking love both Daft Punk and Gorillaz, but comparing RAM and Humanz is just straight up weird. If you compared Humanz to HAA, I'd get it, but RAM? That's just fucking confusing to me.
I just meant the feel of it, yes RAM is far superior to this mess. Can i compare Humanz to the last Disclosure record instead? I'm just stating the feeling of being super pumped for an album and just trying to find stuff to like out of it.
Fuck, this is so weird and so uncomfortable. I'm in love with this album.
But you're right on lack of Jamie Hewlett's influence on the whole work.
This is not supposed to be an album from Damon Albarn. This is supposed to look, sound and feel like a Gorillaz's album and this is not the case.
Kill Your Parents same boat and I agree
Kill Your Parents so... they came out with one music video so far. Those animations he wants saying we're "uninspired" were place holder images just so it wasn't a static one. We will get more than one music videos.
Kill Your Parents there's also the Gorillaz show that was announced
Kill Your Parents
I feel like this is like one of those albums where the singles stand on there own, but don't fit together in an album. The musics good but like so many contemporary albums the themes and tone of the album are pushed aside to make more diverse music. But with that you sacrifice making a good album for making good singles. It's near the opposite of what Gorillaz used to be but still doesn't make the music bad. Just disappointing.
big vape when I first heard it, this album just felt unfinished :/ better with the next time, like better then nothing
You know, I just enjoy gorillaz. I'm a simple man and this album made me smile so overall I enjoyed humanz. But it's definitely a lot of wasted potential
I like the songs, I think some of them are pretty darn good - I don't think they suit the Gorillaz world. If I can't imagine 2D singing a song or Murdoc playing the bass or Russle Drumming then I start to have problems.
I just pictured Damon doing coke.
Congratulations.
all of the band members in canon lore are multi talented with several instruments and all of them produce and write in canon so I mean in lore it can make sense to being their album
You gave this a 5 but you also gave Humanz a 5?! And you gave the last Gorillaz album a 5?! Where's the consistency melon?!?!
my cum doesnt have consistency anymore
nigguh whut
Not pulling any punches, asking the hard questions...
Humanz was good, but it didn't give me that "Gorillaz" experimental vibe. 6/10
Coming from listening to not only the popular stuff like Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc. and all that stuff, but D-Sides, G-Sides, some of The Fall (which I still have yet to fully enjoy or just straight up don't like it), I feel like I can say something about Damon's direction in his musical sense to give an opinion about Humanz.
This album really just feels like a super sponsored youtube video, where a lot of artists are featured, and it's nice that these artists can get some extra attraction to them, if you know what I'm saying, but Damon did that so much, it's kind of like drowning your meal with so many condiments, and the actual taste of the food is gone. Occasionally you can get a slight whiff of it, like Momentz, I liked that one a lot, but the other times, it's kinda all, just condiments. That's not to say these condiments aren't bad (I really liked the Staples brothers tracks, and how they kinda link in similar sounding songs), but it just, y'know, drowned in it.
if you want a really good "the fall" song... plz listen to hillbilly man. that song alone changed my whole perception of the fall...
Agreed! I also think that revolving doors is wonderful as well as bobby in pheonix
and revolving doors and amarillo

anime riff raff The Staples brothers? You do know that A.) Mavis Staples and Vince Staples aren't even related, and B.) Mavis Staples is a, like, 70 year old woman and therefore isn't a "brother".

I felt like the album lacked any consistency in tone or mood and just was so...awkward? I think the word to describe this album is awkward. Really wanted this to be good.
Scotty
yeah, it was written in 2016
Liliputian07 Not sure what you mean
2016 was an inconsistent, confusing year, and Humanz is completely wrapped up in those politics and that feeling
It's the utter derailment of the millenial generation
Liliputian07 oh...so you're crazy
Liliputian07 Thats just a poor excuse and you know it.
Anthony nailed it with this review. Humanz doesn't sound bad by any means, and it has a lot of infectiously catchy, well-crafted songs, but there's simply too many guest features and the album sounds more like a jumbled up mix tape than an LP and there's an overall lack of theme and sound style. Good album just not on par with self-titled, Demon Days, and Plastic Beach.
Joey's Brother thank you for being open minded!
plastic beach was shit
plastic beach was great, so many amazing songs. Go back and listen again, you wont be disappointed.
Disagree. Plastic Beach is loaded with classics.
+Joey's Brother i love the first half of plastic beach, but i could never get the last 10 or so songs
I want to cry thinking about this album. Gorillaz means so much to me but Anthony was completely right about this album. I miss the wonder and excitement i got from exploring their world. Now its not too different from anything else out and its hard to listen to all the way through.
Korbin Schoolfield Old Gorillaz material still exists. This album was pretty lame but that shouldn't stop you from continuing to enjoy the music you love 😊
I used to hate this album, but now, I actually love it. Guess its kind of underrated now
It’s ok, for the gorillas that’s bad I think. It is underrated, but I get why people disliked it
This album had like 7 good songs, and there were like 20
Yendor precisely the problemo
And it felt like there were like ten since they all went by so quickly without leaving an impression.
No, it had 7 listenable songs, not a single song saved.
Luke Macducci There were 19 songs in total plus 7 interludes. Not 14.
Yendor
The only skippable tracks for me were strobelite, carnival, hallelujah money, we got the power, halfway house, out of body, and circle of friendz. The rest were dope as fuck. Overall fire album. It's a light to a decent 9.
This is the harshest 5/10 ever
he has very high standards for gorillaz

eva s7 the same way
@@arlann- song machine was like humanz but not that bad.Desole is a banger and A lot of the tracks were pretty solid imo. That being said nothing since plastic beach has topped it, and I don't know if Damon can top it oof.

Di-Dorval Seconded. Plastic Beach is god-tier.
nah mates S/T and D-Sides are where it's at
Fever Ray IT'S DARE! ( tries to beat box but just spread saliva all over him)
S/T?
This is easily the worst gorillaz album instrumentally, and there is too much reliance on the features unfortunately. Doesn't feel like a gorillaz album :(
Oracle Nova Nah I think I liked this one more than The Fall. This album was worth it at least cuz of Let me out. I cringed a bit at the "trump" "obama" bits, but my god Mavis Staples in the end of the song... She was the best featured artist on the album
Underground906 On the record the syllables are hidden with a sound effect, however if you check the live performances and lyrics it says Obama is gone, who's left to save us and "They say the devil's at work and trump is calling favors"
Oracle Nova I like this album more than Plastic Beach. Come at me haters.
JoshTheGreat33 your opinion is appreciated
The fall wasn't horrible though. This album only has a few songs that really stuck with me and maybe that will change once i give it another listen but i agree this is by far the weakest gorillaz album
nice analysis. i still really like some songs in the album, but i can see where you come from!
IM a huge Gorillaz fan. This album had some great songs. But it shallows in comparison to their previous albums. If it meant that the album was delayed and had some better writing and some of the overall layers of music changed. I'd wait just happily.

Unusual Mind you're dumb
Bryn Del Valle I'm feeling a light 3 to 4/edgy on your comment - NOT GOOD
Thanks 🙏🏼
Look, I'm a HUGE Damon Albarn fan. His solo stuff is great, The Good, the Bad and the Queen are fantastic, and I absolutely love Blur, however this is not only the least sounding Gorillaz album, but also my least favorite album Damon has put out. (Edit: I got the Super Deluxe Version of the album and there's a couple more songs that feel more like the Gorillaz style and some of the other tracks have grown on me over time.)
^my thoughts exactly
Now, I haven't heard this one tbh. Not hugely into Gorillaz, tho Albarn is a beautiful otherworldly genius manboy. But do you think this is lesser listenable than his Democrazy album?
ps. 13 is the best album EVER
I'm not bad at you, I'm mad at albarn for producing a gorillaz record when he wasn't in the headspace for it.
I'm not bad at him either
Wrds Mth I'm bad at him.
*VERY BAD.*
Bomberfish omfg 😂😂😂😂
Guess, let's not be bad at this comment.
Ive been loving this album.
SOMEone must agree with me'
The Momentz rant was very satisfying, how much do I owe you
He basically destroyed the only Gorillaz style song in the album, I like that song though
For the record people are saying are the gorillaz fans are going to be butthurt. Actually if you look on the sub they are being very respectful and polite.
Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Gorillaz, but without criticism, how could they improve? It's better to shed light on people's shortcomings than keep them in the dark and be ignorant of them. I liked the album a lot, and if other people didn't then that's their deal.
A CHA- CHA-CHARGER

god I fucking hate that song. call me dumb as much as you like, but I really don't find that love that everyone gives to that track
@@EastIsMyName I don't mind the fact that it's repetitive, I just hate Damon's performance with all my heart. instrumental is damn good, but Damon sounds like a fucking zombie on that track; plus annoying feature
@@xbenci I’d be lying if I said that the song didn’t grow on me a little bit but I don’t think it’s their best work

maybe it's nostalgia but to me older records sounded more "visual" and painted more of a picture and seemed cohesively illustrated with the production

Jessica Walrus Well someone's salty.

jovanni martinez Nope, I always am fine with what he says, but my opinons are always diffrent from his
The Milkkid l Everyday Robots was a 10
surely i’m not the only person who absolutely loves some of these songs? i’d say 7/10, the apprentice is one of my favorite songs ever
I love Rag’n’Bone man, and that song is pretty good too...but it’s not even on the album proper! It’s on the Deluxe edition, which I always think is a bit sketchy. Like, I love the tracks on the “Plastic Beach - Deluxe” version but they were just some nice instrumentals; they didn’t have to be on the album.
Deluxe albums shouldn’t be “Oh, I forgot to finish the album, here’s the rest,” they should be “Glad you liked the album, here’s some cuts that didn’t make it.”
I really like saturnz barz. Haven’t really listened to the rest though so don’t know how good the album is overall
busted and blue is literally so beautiful
Am I the only one that actually really liked the album? Yeah, I can recognise the low points but I still kind of liked it regardless.
Out of curiosity are you a fan of their past albums? and I don't mean one or two songs.
Jet Set Tomato Yeah. A bit more than a year ago they were all I listened to for months ahah. I knew quite a few of their songs before then. However, beings relatively new fan, each album I listened to did take quite a while to get used to. This gave me exactly the same vibe. I don't really have a favourite song of their's, but some of my favourites are Fire coming out of the monkey's head, Superfast jellyfish, Empire ants, 5/4 and Clint Eastwood. In Humanz, I really like Out of Body, Ticker Tape (The second half reminds me of Willy Wonka for some reason) and Let me out.
Hannah Javavenos well said my friend, well said.
Well, yeah, man almost everyone liked it but a lot of negative things stood out to some people
Jessica Walrus Its not blindly following. It's people who share the same opinion as him.
Wow you gave DAMN. slavery/10 but this gets a 9/11
Nigga Nigga thanks my nigga
Jasko Skoja I found it funny
It's so hard getting through the entire video without checking the score.
Osama Bin Laden that's the problem of the times; people don't have patience. If you only care for the score, then sure, but then you wouldn't comment this.
I would like a Sleeping Powder review. Knowing your opinion on this single it would be really good.
He really likes it. He talked about it on his best tracks of the week segment
Busted and Blue is so damn good. Same with Andromeda.
I'm loving it. It's just what Damon said it would be, a party record for the end of the world. It's wild, it's weird, it's dark, it's manic, and it's exhausting. I feel like the guests here are well-utilized almost across the board, and when Damon is front an center he's in excellent form. This album isn't and masterful as Demon Days or consistent as Plastic Beach, but as its own new weird apocalyptic party story album, I think it succeeds. Halfway to the Halfway House and Carnival (the latter of which I do enjoy) are the only songs that really feel out of place to me. The metacritic score sits around 8/10ish which feels about right to me, personally I'm really really digging it.
I totally agree. everyone is trying to fit the album in with some other gorillaz album. "its not like demon dayz, its not like plastic beach" well it's not supposed to be. the point of the album is being different from anything else not only they have done but also anyone else has done. I usually agree with anthony but this album is great in my eyes
toodlesXIV Halfway to the Halfway House is by far my favourite song, I feel so sad hearing everyone bag it :(
I don't hate it on its own, I just feel like it doesn't fit well between The Apprentice and Out of Body.
its not a party record for the end of the world. its about the chaos of the world status today. or it was supposed to
"Objectively I'd give it an 8/10"
"Objectively"
"8/10"
*"Objectively"*
Sure.
As someone who grew up listening to Gorillaz... I liked it. It's different yes, but much like other Gorillaz albums the more you listen to it the more it grows on you... Some tracks aren't too fantastic, but still listenable. However the stronger tracks (Andromeda, Ascension, Saturnz Barz, Momentz, The Apprentice, Out of Body, Strobelite, Submission, Let Me Out, Ticker Tape, She's My Collar, and We Got the Power -which yes I do like) really do shine once you've soaked them in a bit. I liked the album quite a bit. Honestly I feel that the problem with it is that their previous albums are considered the standard, which it's kinda hard to top considering how darn perfect they were. But if you treat Humanz like I do, and see it as a part of the whole, you will enjoy it a lot more.
The issue with that is that there's no little to no actual gorillaz in the album, I mean Plastic Beach had guest singers but Humanz takes it to a new level with having almost all the songs being sung by other people.
If you like steak, but are served a steak that is 7% meat and 93% chicken would you enjoy it? It's still good in its own way, but steak is not chicken.
Jet Set Tomato but gorillaz wrote all the lyrics and made the instrumentals so that counts as a gorillaz album
I'd criticize it at first, but I like chicken so I keep eating
Bender they havent released an album in a long time, and people consider the previous albums the true gorillaz. Thats why they really dont like humanz
There´s nothing wrong with trying something new, hell the whole band was created to try something different to create a fictional musical persona. The problem here is that that´s what´s missing. I mean you can barely hear Damon in most of the album and don´t even get me started on how the bands visuals, aka the most iconic thing about the band, have become less and less important (this is the reason it took so long to make a new album). There´s good tracks on this, but it really does pale in comparisson to the previous albums.
This was a really good review
Hayden Bryant a decent 7/10

Erik Giovani I don’t think it’s as great as you’d like to think
Screw this biz about "real fans" feeling this way or that way about Humanz. Been a Gorillaz fan since I first saw the "Clint Eastwood" music video on Toonami in 2001, and I get both sides of it. I actually agree with some of Anthony's points. Damon promoted this album as having a specific concept behind it: The social reaction to some dark, devastating, world-changing event happening (which in reality turned out to be the election of Donald Trump). But in execution, that strong concept seems to get loosely-followed in the album. Definitely agree about the interludes adding nothing to the album too. And most importantly, I'm with you on thinking Damon has been losing focus on the Gorillaz identity and turning it into just his collab wish-fulfillment project.
I get the disappointment with the lack of 2D and prominence of guest features. All that being said, I still think Humanz is a solid album. I enjoy most of those trademark genre-bending tracks themselves and they continue to grow on me, which I've come to expect with Gorillaz. I was iffy on Plastic Beach and The Fall at first too, but grew to love both of them. So right now I'd say Humanz is my least favorite Gorillaz album and put it at a 7.5, but I imagine that might change over time.
Tre' Jones I'm glad someone has the same idea as me, people wanted so much from this album and when they got it hated it. I honestly love how this is a cluster fuck of party songs, not everything will stay the same. These "true fans" clearly aren't very open to change, and by change I mean something that's not demon days.
Tre' Jones Glad to know I'm not the only one Gorillaz music has to "grow on." But when it does, it's amazing. Really enjoying this album, but went into it with no expectations or following any of the news about it, so maybe that helps..?
Solid points.
My order:
1) Demon days
2) Plastic Beach
3) Gorillaz (self titled)
4) Contrary to most I really like The Fall, I haven't given Humanz long enough yet so they tie for me
Gorillaz is my favorite artist, but meh....Humanz just isn't good. It doesn't feel like Damon was really trying when he made it.
But what really killed it was 1. The lack of 2D vocals, and 2. the generic drumming. Even if you were going to strip back 2D's vocals, you can't replace Russell's signature percussion with shitty machine drum beats and expect it to still sound like Gorillaz.
Also, what's really sad is that the best song to come out of this whole thing wasn't even released with the album. "Sleeping Powder" blows the entirety of Humanz out of the water. Wonder what happened.
so sad that this is so overly hated, humanz honestly comes close to my favourite gorillaz album, i love it for what it is and i don’t care what anyone says. also the ending of momentz is still so incredibly beautiful, and ascension is a great start to the album. also andromeda is beautiful.
It's rightfully criticised
@Far Stox go listen to something else idk, why can’t people enjoy this album smh my head
@Far Stox you are arrogant and a pitiful elitist, you go cry.
i wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, but it’s the album that really got me into their music so i got a soft spot for it. a lot of great tracks and would’ve been great if it wasn’t so bloated.
If an album means anything to you, keep it that way. What other people think of it shouldn’t influence your opinion
Tbh I think this album has aged better with time. But following Plastic Beach and Demon Days, the fact that the entire album isn't amazing was going to make it a let down no matter what
Yep. I came here to say this. I watched this review when it released, but I returned because I couldn't remember what he said.
I enjoyed Humanz on release, and I think that the songs have stayed in my regular lineup for listening since then is indicative that they were good, in my opinion. And I think that they've gotten better over time.
I think they have a nice balance on the album of energy and melancholy.
And I say this after listening to Cracker Island, which unfortunately, I didn't enjoy. It was way too low energy, and reminded me of Damon's solo work, which I rarely listen to.
The title track is good and Skinny Ape, though. Those I may keep listening to, but the rest is immediately repellant, for me. Maybe that will change, but I don't like the moody slow songs unless they're a reprieve from the energy, and Cracker Island has very little energy.
