Cabin Air Filter Replacement 2002 Ford Focus

- Cabin air filters can sometimes be difficult to replace, but on these cars, it's very easy. Make sure to replace it every 30,000 miles or so. This service interval will vary. If you notice a loss in air flow, a foul smell, dust coming out the vents, or you have allergies, replacing the cabin air filter might help. Sometimes you'll see some really nasty stuff collected in the air filter.
Now I've actually done it on my Focus, and it was hilarious! Got it all prized open, as above, and, like many others commenting, there was no filter in place - there wasn't even a filter holder unit.. Ulp.. So then I thought, maybe it's in the other side.. Sure enough, prized open the plastic cover on the right, and there it was! It was remembering your American accent that helped me twig. Mine is a right-hand drive UK model. Thanks again!
FYI - DISCARD AIR FILTER CAGE! According to Ford, and my ‘02 Ford Focus, the cage is to be discarded and you should just set the filter in the housing. This is per Ford, as of 08 DEC 21.

I found out that ford doesn't put one in....go figer. Glad I watched your video, another other videos people were throwing the plastic covers away. Good job for doing it right.
Might have been an Option Skipped out on the dealer or the Original Owner , or you
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t pull the top all the way off 😂😂 mine didn’t have a cabin filter either
Good video. Oddly enough, neither of my focuses came with the filter either. I will say though, after I put one in, that panel let all kinds of rain water down there. I resealed it with a bit of silicone again to stop the deluge.
Mine either I was tilted 🫥
From what I've heard they come new without a filter in there. It's just setup so if you want a cabin air filter, all you need to do is put one in.
Not only does air go through that filter but water too! I’ve done replaced two blower motors because of that stupid design! Nice going Ford!
I watched 3 videos on how to do this - this one was the best :) thanks.
I'm glad to hear that. Happy to help out.
I went to fix a leak on mine yesterday also finding no filter. I can't seem to get the lid to the housing back on properly because it seems too small.
The reason you are having so much trouble getting to black plastic out is because of this screw we see on the the driver side part of the black plastic at 1:08. There's a clip attaching both plastic together. The best would be to remove the wiper arms and get both plastic out, but you can also just carefully pry the passenger side one out after removing the screw.

So it has two cabin filters? I've had my 2000 for 19 years and just decided to change my engine air. The cabin air has never been changed, and now everyone either has breaks or leaks or no filter at all! Car has never let me down or stranded me, even when the water pump let go, it was in my driveway after a squeal started on my way home. The ZTS has a nice acceleration and still squeals the front tire!
many fords come without cabin airfilters in them from factory. same thing found on Ford Escapes/Mazda Tributes.
I thought the airflow went the other way? With the arrow pointing toward the windshield? Maybe I have it wrong then?
I agree the Zetec is much more desireable and reliable in stock trim. I have an entire video series about replacing the SPI head with an improved head which is claimed to eliminate any issues with valve seat loss.
My ZTS is still running strong for 19 years 180,000 miles, only failure has been rear wheel bearings and a water pump!!
My now 19 year old SPI is running smooth. Granted it has 85k miles but in the focus fanatics forum a guy said his untouched SPI has 190k miles on it. So they are reliable. They’re not reliable when you gun it and drive fast, as long as you eco drive it will last a long time. SPI failure is mainly guys who are sporty kids who blow the valve seats. Drive it easy and it’ll take care of you.
This might be possible in my case. My Focus is the basic base model with no options except A/C, although A/C might have been standard by 2002.
I opened mine. And it didn't have one in it either.. my wife bought in brand new back in 2005.. I think they just make it optional
Thank you very much friend, I say hi from Puerto Vallarta, thanks a lot, wonderful video !!
My car is Focus 2006 2.0 16V Duratec motor, new filter after 8 years, so you understand now why I say wonderful video !
Loved this - Thanks! Cracked up laughing at points in it. "Real School"!
The CR80 is in my basement. If you want to see an update video, go to the last CR80 video and pause it. I'm not going to make a video about a bike that I haven't worked on. As for your bike, I'm going to guess your fuel mixture is not perfect since it doesn't run right. Pull the plug and see if it's running rich or lean, then tune the carb to fix it. Also, it's less likely, but check that the reeds are in good condition.
Would like to see you put an aftermarket intake system in. Been wanting to do so for awhile to my 07 ford focus zx4 2.0 duratec engine but I have no idea how to go about doing so.
Or water dripping means your vent drain is plugged. My 02 Jeep has a nice water puddle in the passenger side when you have the air on.
great video! by the looks of my air filter on my focus it will need the cabon air filter replaced lol
Mk 1 focus 1998-2004 are all like this but there is another cap that covers a screw to remove then the full cover comes off the clips that hold it to the windscreen break if handled this ruffly in the UK we also have a sticky gasket seal that fits along the top to stick and seal it to the windscreen or they rain in and collect in to the passenger footwell
Air comes in from the top and goes down through the filter into the HVAC system.
Great job on the video. Thank ya!
Best to buy the whole kit including the cover as the clips break easily plus you need a good seal between the cover and window.
There's no point in buying the whole kit if you're careful and don't break things.
TheAlexManVideos Do you not have a strip of sticky foam/sponge-like material holding the rubber seal down between the windscreen and cowl piece? This is keeping mine in place and i'm not sure whether to just cut it off with a blade or if there is a way around this?
@@hakkalocken dude I'm with you. Mine had this sun baked strip of gunk that was so strong and sticky that it would make Spiderman blush. I ended up using a combination of a heat gun, goo off, and paint thinner just to get rid of the shit. I still think I lost 10 IQ points from the fumes i created from mixing the chems.. Anyways I ended up using construction caulk. That commercial grade shit to stick it back to the window but after a few years in at it again because the seal broke and water plus plant debris(i hope it's only plant) started cooking in there. It smells like dead rats in my focus now. Don't even know why I kept it aside from the fact that it's become a personal challenge to break 200k miles and I'm so close. But ya.. That strip of gunk is a nightmare. I didn't even know you could replace the entire assembly. That probably would have been the better option.. 😂
Might vary though, since the Focus' filter is on the outside of the cabin.
Cabin Air Filters are often optional when they are purchased new from the dealer, therefore the filter itself may have never been in the vehicle.
Very helpful! Thanks
best video very help full thanks
Good video
I would suggest prepping before doing the video so you know what you are facing and not have to go through the windshield wiper thing or discovering that there's no filter there
That is an @$$hole system. Ford Engineer who came up with that needs a kick in the nuts.
They want your money at the dealerships.
my focus didn't have a filter either.?
Thank you!!!!
this is completely wrong. the black plastic came from the factory instead of the filter. it should be thrown away and the filter slides into place easily.
ahora hechale agua aver si te entra asin no se quita el filtro
Don't do it
I pushed in the clips they all broke
Just select internal air and don't use external air on your air-conditioning
yeah but sometimes when it rains it gets condensation inside. To get rid of the condensation you should use external air.
,,,,,,,,, Here, have some commas.
alex your cute :)
That's what you get when you buy a used car ;) especially from a family who knows nothing about cars. hahahahhhahha
