Hi, as I understand it the photodiode generates the reverse current regardless of the voltage through it, but only exhibits positive current once the voltage threshold has been passed. In this case, the voltage threshold is 0.5V, so below it no forward current is created so the current caused by the light can be seen. The dark current is not affected by this because it is caused by the reverse voltage applied. Hope that makes sense

So that holes and electrons don't cross the pn junction into the opposite zone and generate dark current, which may result in noisy spectra
