    HEAT TREATING:
    Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
    Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
    Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

    When watching your videos I love the questions and thoughts you create. It makes me think a lot about how and why they were made in the way they were. I do believe it is pretty evident it was a tribal thing. My thoughts on how they made points, knives etc. Thinking it was taught by the elders to the younger. On how. And what tools to use. Then as time passed they found ways to make it easier and quicker with more modern tools for the period they lived in ,like we do. Take for instance what you're doing for me,us. Teaching techniques for making the points, bows and arrows etc, with our tools.Thanks for that!!👍👍

    @17:30. I tried to give a speech in speech class about making arrowheads in college in 2004-2005. I was left with the same explanation as my class asked me constantly exactly how the first people made stone tools. You elaborate better than I did back then. Also I went back to the lake beach I found some chert and large quartz stones at. Hoping the material I picked up is knappable. I’ll likely post a couple shorts tomorrow one on it’s found state and one on the fractures, I pray the are smooth and concoidal. I only hope in these Midwest lands over the quality of stones. God I love glass.

    As much as I love these videos, I have never asked any of the questions you claim the audience will ask and I've never said "really!?!?" When given the answer. Awesome point, great video, yap on.

    They probably kept the core around too and once they took off way too many sharp flakes they probably ended up with a biface

    Being from southern Indiana I’ve found a few artifacts made from horn stone over the years and they were always very well made items. Logic told me horn stone had to be a great material for making good high quality points.

    Different tools, Different stone, different tribes, different individuals making them. Everyone had their own preference. I'd imagine people Start the same way as their teacher, and fine tune their own craft as they go. Everyone definitely knapped different from each other.

    Ive only worked a couple small peices but man ive gotta say Sonora is my favorite stone ive worked. Particularly some HT Sonora. It turned a dark chocolate color. Darker than that Butes you worked other day. I really really love that point. I wish I could buy it. Id look at it and handle it everyday.

    @27:18 kinda hope you make support logs downhill and lay out a platform that is fairly level to work on. Similar to a deck but with natural wood. It’s not mine to dream over though.

      There's actually a section of a retaining wall downhill from that level spot. But yeah, I've got some plans brewing in my head for the future. 😁

    Yeah.....the memory thing...
    Did you just diagnose me with ADHD/autism? ...well the Dr. did too.
    Took a long time to realize not everyone thought like me. Idk about you, but I also have the problem where I also will remember "wrong" answers. Like when driving, if my landmark tree was cut down, so I missed my turn, I will spend the rest of my life only remembering that turn I took last time....but without remembering that it's the wrong turn 😅

      My sons have autism. I can see it in my Dad now that I finally get to spend time with him (my parents divorced when I was 5). So I took a test to see if I have it. Sure enough, I scored much higher for autism than for ADHD. I thought, "That explains a lot! Better late than never."

      Hey Jack. Love your videos. Been watching for several months now and I have learned a ton from you. Keep up the great work. Any chance you could share rock suppliers by email? I don't have a FB acct and refuse to make one for personal reasons. Luke Hammack and Jeff Head to be specific. Thx

    i have tried the thumb popping notch technique thingy on pitchstone obsidian and put a sharp flake right into my thumb very quickly . tried on a tougher flint and the flaker slipped and ended up removing the tip of my thumbnail which was miserable .

    Would it have been possible for them to use a thin flake to make their notches?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  Місяць тому

      Yes, but not on something this thick. Stone "flakers" work best on very thin pieces. (Edit: you might think this is very thin, but I'm not talking about width to thickness ratio. I'm talking about actual thinness like 1/16" thick or less, for example).

    Patrick is there much of a difference between the 13th and 15th edition? I have the 15th but want another so fun to study

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  Місяць тому +1

      I've looked at both, and there's not much difference. If you need more material to study, you can look on the projectilepoints.net site, for example.
