I know I realised that editing LOL. I do try not to curse in videos though as I know some people don’t like it. But it’s funny how I do get many comments about my cursing and I’m always thinking to myself - what cursing lol. It has to be the ship or shipping lol
So, I've been reselling for over 10 years, full time the past 2 years. I mostly sold clothes, but was so incredibly bored selling clothing. I decided to try selling something I loved (all with the inspiration from your videos) and I can't begin to tell you how well it's going so far. Most folks will practically give away books by the box full. It's amazing and so fun! I owe you a huge thank you!
Wasn't planning for any yard sales today, but stumbled across 2 on my errands. I ended up buying a few books at both! I couldn't comp because of service so I went with my gut. Got a first edition, some old art books, 2022 cookbook, and Dean Koontz lot. All for 15 for $11 and quick comping in the car shows the Koontz and art books will sell for $50 so well into the profit already. I'm pleased with my first intentional book buy!
I watch all your videos and I still have more to go.. I'm seriously thinking about selling books online and you're one of my inspirations.. I love you sense of humor and the fact that you wear Boston gear.. I'm from the Boston area originally.. you're an inspiration to me and many others
Love your vid's Mel. I'm going through a similar issue with storage space for my Ebay/Marketplace/Boot sale inventory. Have you considered moving your photography area to your end wall, racking out your other side wall to the ceiling, and having your inventory sorting/mailing/work tables down the middle? I'm not sure how cramped that would be... just a thought. OR, get hubby to extend your garage while he's at it :) Much love ....
I’ve thought about it but I do think I’d feel super cramped. But I do think so I’ll have to start thinking more about the future as I am worried I’m going to outgrow my space.
I use iPhone. I put it on square setting (1.1ratio), then use the vivid mode. Then I pull up the exposure button so if I need to adjust it while I photograph a book I can quickly slide it across to adjust while I work.
Thank you so much for being authentic and showing the struggle of those missing books! If any reseller says that has never happened to them they would be fibbing!
Hi Mel, thanks for sharing so much of your knowledge on UA-cam - your channel is a gem! I'm wondering if you can share where your ring light is from, or more tips on how to photograph? I've been photographing kids books in a Lightbox for my kids bookstore, and I have to do so much post editing it's quite a pain. But you seem to be able to photograph books really nicely without any post editing, so if you wouldn't mind sharing some tips and tricks that would be great! Thank you!
Fantastic. Love your energy. I think I need to drink more coffee 😂 Gosh your dog cracked me up. Reminded me of our beagle when he was a pup and chewed up a large print library book. Of course he picked the most expensive one to destroy 😆
Haha… the article is in Danish. The first page is starting with a swearing word and that it is about «your private parts». I think it is written in a humoristic way. On the next page it is about a Swedish man who is allergic to his wife 🤣
Oh ha ha ha ha ha really!!! That’s so random!!!! The book seemed to be about a play. I wonder if the article was talking about the original play. I feel like if the book has a newspaper article inside it then it has to be relevant in some way!
Many decades ago I had a Border Collie. I still love that dog. He and I were great buddies. I got to learn Border Collie pretty well. What Patch is saying is, "Please play less with those bloody books and play ball with me more often." That is in no way meant as any criticism. In memory of my good buddy, I am simply translating for Patch.
great video Mel as usual! very entertaining, I had an idea for your light if you don’t need it to go up and down you coud get someone possibly yourself to use a self tapping screw to scre into the pole to the position you like to use it at avoiding the cord of cours. This maybe tricky if its on the inside of the pole. there maybe other hacks people have come up with using cheap items bought from the hardware store that might also work like a hose clamp or something similar rather than having to buy new and throw out or discard. they just don’t make things to last these days its so infuriating!
I don’t need it to go up or down but I do need to be able to swivel it as sometimes when I photograph bundles I need to turn the light as it might reflect on one of the books. A few people have suggested a clamp so that might be good as I can then remove it easily if need be to turn it.
Interesting. I used to do my books alphabetically but once I was growing I had like 6 shelves on “M” and it was a nightmare looking for the book over so many shelves
I felt bad as I left the books out there in the hopes one of the boys would carry them for me to the recycle. He doesn’t normally chew things but the books must have looked tasty lol
Love the video Can you please talk about shipping on books? Books are heavy and to include free post postage starts from $9.30. There is only few dollars left as a profit. Thank you
I’m on Band 5 with Australia Post so most of my small postage rates are $5.58 - $7.44 to send a book. When selling books full time like I do it is important to sell volume so I need lots of listings to do that and it’s important for me to get the highest postage discounts to make as much profit as possible.
@@backfromburnout thank you for explaining this, I wondered how the Australian postage worked with books. We have lower cost media mail in the US which is why the book market is so saturated on our Ebay-but people selling books for $3.99 and free shipping, I don't understand-the ebay fee calculator says they are actually losing 38 cents on the sale?
I've just started watching your videos after the chat with TechnSports. I'm very surprised and intrigued by your business model. I sell anything (300+ items), but am soon moving and greatly downsizing (743sqft for a family of 5). My eBay business will go from its own room to a small attic space. I love that you can have so much inventory and take up so little space. Considering a change and branching out to experiment with other categories like books.
Thank you! I currently have almost 4000 listings in this space. I always thought it would fit about 5000 listings here in my shed and I think I’m still correct on that. After I hit 5000 book listings I might look at adding some CDs as a secondary genre as they won’t take a lot of space up.
Don't forget to move the other half of the stack of the pink Zumbar books to the new location! It's nice when you can get into a rhythm, can be very therapeutic! Thanks Mel, as always.
Love the dog intro, looks like a Border Collie. I used to have one and he was my best buddy. As for your light, can you simply find some sort of clamp you can add over the smaller pole assuming one pole slides into another? Most photo poles have the tightening collar clamp, and I know they where out, so this is why I am suggesting adding one to close tight on the upper pole which will keep it sliding down. Love your videos and always bubbly personality!
Yes he is a border collie, he is turning one this month so still just a puppy. He’s actually a good boy and doesn’t really chew anything except his toys but those books I left outside the door for the boys to help me carry must have taken his fancy 😂 I will search for a little clamp. If I tape it I won’t be able to swing it around and sometimes I twist it to avoid reflection when photographing some of the bundles of books
1 of my ring lights completely broke off the tripod. I still use it, i just hold it up lol. I can't throw it out, it still works! Also, you don't curse much but when you do it's great. You're relatable! I cuss at my inventory & supplies quite often 🤣
Thank you. I try to only add in a curse if I feel it’s appropriate (like when the light fell lol). I do try not to curse just in general talking to the camera. I feel the same about my light. While the actual light still works I need to find an alternative and people have suggested a clamp so that might be the perfect answer to my problem!
Greetings Mel, I also love watching your videos. I also sell books 📚 and follow your methods. I am doing pretty well thanks to you. 🧘🏾♀️🙏🏽 I am going to edit my settings also on my cellular like you did. See if the photos come out better. Thanks again 🪴
Maybe but I also swing it around often when I photograph bundles to avoid the light reflecting on some books so if I taped it then it would be fixed in the spot
Yes it has to be semi organised now in my space as it’s getting full! It sure feels like mess though when I have no bench space or floor space around me lol
Love your videos. Probably discussed somewhere and I missed it ... I never see you taking weight or postage into account. Do you use a form of media mail? Keep up the videos - they are very helpful (and entertaining). Sarge
In Australia our packages are flat rate. So we choose by size and all parcels have a weight limit of 5kg (11pounds). So I don’t need to weigh them, I just need to know the size of the book to know what size mailer it will need. I always pick my orders first so I can double check any book sizes I don’t know off the top of my head.
Great Video Mel. Always have a laugh when watching you, the light and the sh## comment, your cute dog looking rather guilty then wanting to play ball. All in the “life of Mel”, working from home.
Dang it has been 5 days since you dropped this video, I'm always behind 😍 Your dog is so cute and funny. No matter how hard we try we can't be mad at our fur babies 🐶💜 My frustration too, sometimes, can't find an item that sold and spend hrs looking because when I organized I forgot to change SKU location. Great sales as always. Thank you for being at my birthday bash, I appreciate that 💜💜💜 You're amazing 😍💥💞
I couldn't imagine you ever swearing Mel 🤣😜 I reckon though there is a method where you can push a button and print much easier. It might be worth just ringing AustPost and asking them if there is a better way, explaining what you do. 💪 We might not think it, but I'm sure they can be helpful hehhehe
Another great video Mel. I see you have nearly filled those two new shelf units already. You should have put all those pink books together on one shelf. Another massive haul to sort out. Good luck with sales. xx
When I was editing the video I thought to myself, why didn’t you just move all the books LOL. Yes this was a good haul, I wish I could find this many every time I sourced lol.
I know, it was my fault I left them out for one of the boys to lift for me to recycle as they were all the damaged ones from my discard collection. He never normally chews anything we leave around except his toys. He is such a beautiful puppy, almost one now. We adore him.
Hi Mel, I really enjoy your videos, so much helpful information. Do you still sell a book if someone had written in it - ie like their name ? Thank Rachel 😊
put your light at the correct height then wrap some masking tape around the top part of the pole only were it meets the bottom part of the pole and it stops it sliding down unexpectedly. Also why did you separate the stack of pink books into two? with one stack in a designated area and the second not? surely that is more confusing than keeping them all together?
I have thought about tape but sometimes I have to turn the light when doing bundles to stop it reflecting and showing on a book cover. If I tape it I don’t think it will turn. I’ll have to try it. I know when I was editing the video I thought that exact same thing to myself about separating the books lol. I think my thought process at the time was just to keep some on the unlisted shelf and some on a listed shelf to take up less space on the listed shelves. I’m not sure but I agree that was silly of me lol
@@backfromburnout don't tape the top section to the bottom. The top section is still seperate and so can be turned as needed. The tape is just wound around the bottom of the top section wereit normally sits into the bottom section. the tapes thickness when wrapped around the same area a few times acts as a stopper when it butts against the top of the bottom pole section. I'm not sure I'm explaining it clearly, but mine does the same and this has worked for me
Hey Mel do you still remember the days before you were offering Free Returns? I'm forever on the fence about it and too scared to try at the moment (we sell clothes). Any advice?
Ha ha, I know of all the videos! LOL. But I don't normally curse in them, I do try not to as I know other's don't like it. I might have the occasional slip of the tongue where appropriate but I don't swear like a sailor in any of my videos ha ha. x
Im still trying to figure out the best way to record my sku number. Where I store my items isn't close to my photo station so it not efficient to place each item in its spot as I go.
Ok let’s work this out. So do you photograph everything in a batch then pile it up and then after all the photos are done take the items all to another room straight away and then put them away?
Hi Mel, I love your channel - I’ve been binge watching your videos. I wanted to ask about is it better to end a listing to revise price and realist it or is it ok to go into the listings and just revise? Is there a penalty for revising your items? I couldn’t find in policy. Thank you! Deb from California.
Just popping in to say there's no charge or penalty for just revising an existing listing, I do it all the time and every now and then it seems to prompt a sale or 2 which also brings more visits in turn :) sometimes it make no difference to my sales but I've never noticed a drop. Sorry I'm not Mel but hope this helps a bit :)
I used to end and sell similar but this year I have stopped doing that following Tech's advice to just edit if required. The thing is if you end it and sell similar the start dates starts as new. But I am now running sales on old stock depending on how long they have been listed. If I keep ending and selling similar then I can't track easily when the book was originally listed and exactly how old it is.
Auspost rant continued: why doesn't the import orders use the custom SKU as the reference number! It takes me twice as long to match up labels to the items and the risk of making a mistake is more stress than is needed. Phew...
Under reference you can type whatever you want so you can easily see which item it’s for. So you could use your sku there. I write an abbreviation of the book name. But again, it’s an extra step we have to do. It also frustrates me it only shows 10 a page and I’d like to sort it oldest to newest. Some days I don’t post every item I have waiting just the ones required and it’s so slow then reloading the multiple pages of orders to get to the oldest items ordered. (Hope that makes sense lol)
@@backfromburnout Hi Mel great video. Patch looks like a very smart dog. With Aust Post you can select how many orders to show per page at the bottom of the screen - it will default to 10 but you can choose 10/25/50/100
@@recommercedave yes but then you do the label and it reverts back to 10. If I’m wanting to only print the oldest 10 and I have 40 labels I have to keep refreshing the page to show the top 50 again and it’s slow to keep loading the page. I wish we could sort it by age of the order from oldest to newest
Many books sell for higher. Research some sold comps and look at the types of books selling for higher prices and bundles can also bring higher sales prices
I'm amazed how much your listings sell for, when I look up books to sell for myself things only seem to sell for like £2.99-£5.99 and that's with free shipping as well! I'm not sure I can compete; I'm starting up an eBay store and watch so many of your videos to help me through it ^_^
I was the same. Started with listing books I no longer need and some that a friend gave me for free. Made pennies. I’ve started trying out other items because books just aren’t worth it for me.
UK definitely has a slightly different market but one of my friends in UK recently bought a 4000 fiction book haul to trial and he’s been having some great success with his by selling them as bundles. He paid 10pence a book and has made his money back fast. I think it is harder for you as you have to compete with world of books who charge very low prices. I think bundling books in UK is worth investigating and running more comps on.
I am doing the same here in canada. Started in may - only 2 sales so far. The base postage rate here is $20 so not worth it for one item. I have started bundling books 1 paperback is $20 to mail - same cost for 6. Makes no sense. Free shipping is out of question. Good luck!
Well he's a working sheep dog, love to do something, otherwise get bored. They're very intelligent, but they do need to be given something to do. Hey Mel, what about a cart for your sheep dog and off to the post office?
@@sandrabentley8111 yes he must have been bored, he doesn’t normally chew or destroy anything except his actual dog toys but this was my fault as I left the bags to recycle outside my shed door for the boys to carry for me and they forgot to do it. So maybe he thought I left him some new toys 🤣 Yep he is a sheep dog but it’s interesting as he’s not nearly as active as it thought he would be. He would run all day, play ball all day and loves his daily walks but he also just loves to laze in the sun on the chair near my shed. I was nervous to get the border collie puppy (my husband grew up with them) but I’m so glad we did. He’s much easier then our old golden retriever was lol. I think a cart for you is a trolley for us? My post office isn’t in walking distance so I can’t put the the parcels in a cart and walk him with me (if that’s what you mean lol)

While I was editing the video I was thinking the exact same thing!! Lol
Dang it has been 5 days since you dropped this video, I'm always behind 😍
Your dog is so cute and funny. No matter how hard we try we can't be mad at our fur babies 🐶💜
My frustration too, sometimes, can't find an item that sold and spend hrs looking because when I organized I forgot to change SKU location.
Great sales as always.
Thank you for being at my birthday bash, I appreciate that 💜💜💜
You're amazing 😍💥💞
I couldn't imagine you ever swearing Mel 🤣😜 I reckon though there is a method where you can push a button and print much easier. It might be worth just ringing AustPost and asking them if there is a better way, explaining what you do. 💪 We might not think it, but I'm sure they can be helpful hehhehe
Your dog is trying to apologize to you by bringing the ball.
So cute
He’s obsessed with playing ball!
Yes I need to spend some time consolidating some of my other shelves in the back room to make some more space again!
Lifting and shifting, rinse and repeat lol
With the Christmas book - it's always good to make your Christmas cake in august/sept to let it sit and feed it with alcohol.
Interesting! I love Christmas pudding
Lol he looks so proud of making the ground 'pretty' for you Mel 😜😂
Cheeky puppy lol
Good boy patch- its not your fault that mummy left her books around. Mummy still loves you-
I adore border collies you are so lucky. Bless
I know, it was my fault I left them out for one of the boys to lift for me to recycle as they were all the damaged ones from my discard collection. He never normally chews anything we leave around except his toys.
He is such a beautiful puppy, almost one now. We adore him.
I like your sweatshirt. Coming from someone who lives in Boston
Oh thanks heaps! I just ordered it recently from Shein website :) I love comfy jumpers like this :)
Is that a new book warehouse you're building?
No sadly lol. It’s a new main bedroom and bathroom :)
@@backfromburnout ooh master suite. Nice
@@emusaurus yes! This house, we bought it to renovate so it needs a lot of work but we’re slowly getting there :).
Hi Mel,
I really enjoy your videos, so much helpful information.
Do you still sell a book if someone had written in it - ie like their name ?
Thank
Rachel 😊
Yes I sure do! I sell heaps of books that are inscribed! I make sure I take a photo of it and mark the book as acceptable
put your light at the correct height then wrap some masking tape around the top part of the pole only were it meets the bottom part of the pole and it stops it sliding down unexpectedly.
Any advice?
Hi from Denmark 😊 the newspaper, it’s in Danish
Hi! I wonder if it had anything to do with the book!
It's danish that little paper in the book, greetings from DENMARK 🇩🇰
I wonder if it was about the play
the newspaper is written in norwegian
Thank you! I hope it’s related to the book and the buyer likes it.
Are you doing everything by yourself? Thanks.
this came up in reconmendeds
"I don't curse in my videos."
What did you say when your ring light fell?
ship ... she said SHIP .... 🤣
Ha ha, I know of all the videos! LOL. But I don't normally curse in them, I do try not to as I know other's don't like it. I might have the occasional slip of the tongue where appropriate but I don't swear like a sailor in any of my videos ha ha. x
LOL
@@sade1626 Thank you very much for the info! I know Mel is very busy and I love watching her - she's fun to watch! Thanks again!
Oh no .gold. Just sitting sume where. On shelf but can not find. For got to number them. U fount them .😊👍. .
:)
Don't curse? what did you say when your light fell over?
I know, of all videos! I don't normally though, I do try not to.
Love your accent and personality
Thank you for watching me!
Another top video Mel 🙌
Thanks for watching James :)
Nice day in the life. Thanks for the tip on the Patreon book club recommendation.
I’ve started listening to it and I’m going to enjoy this one
get a clamp and put it under the light so it wont slide down
I need to buy a clamp! Thank you!
Glad that a high seller like you loses stuff too lol I'm.always kicking myself trying to find things.
Everytime I look up a book on EBay it sells for less than $5.00. I need to start watching you to see how you do it.
I am a new seller. Postage in canada is so high - starts at $20 - so bundling is the answer. Thanks for the tip!!
Many books sell for higher. Research some sold comps and look at the types of books selling for higher prices and bundles can also bring higher sales prices
Bundling is great to sell for higher profits as long as your buying the books for low prices :)
@@backfromburnout Thanks Mel! My BFF and I love watching your channel. You’re our fave eBayer. Take care … have a brilliant day.
I am doing the same here in canada. Started in may - only 2 sales so far. The base postage rate here is $20 so not worth it for one item. I have started bundling books 1 paperback is $20 to mail - same cost for 6. Makes no sense. Free shipping is out of question. Good luck!
@@backfromburnout thanks so much for the advice! I have already started putting all my stock into bundles where I can :D I hope it'll help
I guess now we know how your dog feels about your book business 😀
Lol I had the same set up with my books
Enjoy the “ping.” 🙂 I like your videos. TY!
Lol thank you
Mummy! The book just *exploded*
LOL naughty puppy!
The 3 Rs. Patch just wanted the books to be re-used one more time, before recycle. He wasn't worried by the reduce.
LOL cheeky puppy
Does your storeroom have that old library book smell? 🤔🤔🤔
No smells at all! I keep little bowls of vinegar in the corners which helps absorbs any smells
@@backfromburnout Ooohhh cool trick!! 😊
Where do u get your light from ,im needing a new one too
I buy mine from eBay or Amazon. I use 19” lights.
@@backfromburnout thanks , I was looking at the Kmart one but I don't think it's bright enough
@@msvintage9236 I’m not sure I haven’t tried it.
He needs a automatic ball tosser on ebay you can get him one, he seems like the right dog for one.
He gets obsessed with the ball! We have considered one but we worry he will never stop lol

Hey Mel, you did curse in your vid when then light dropped, but hey shit I don't care, love watching your channel
I know! I saw that when editing lol Of all videos as I really try to make sure I don’t curse on a regular video as I know not everyone likes it.
Come on Mom! Let's play. What mess?? 😂😂😂
Ping! 🤣😅👍🙋♀️you go girl🙌!
Lol I need that afternoon ping!
Holley smock s . Yar dog got bord an Ripp apart a book ..oh my gosh ..
LOL naughty puppy!
If Australia post is anything like Canada Post they won’t be interested in making things better for their customers at all.
Oh boy, shame on your dog for such a mess. Glad you found that one book. Books and more books 📚.. good luck with the sales!
Naughty puppy lol So many books in this haul, thank you for watching!
@@backfromburnout I love collies too. Brought up in sheep country (Yorkshire), England, they are so intelligent and they are a working breed. Sounds like he gets plenty of exercise!
