Gapping is so important, now matter your HC you need clarity between the ears! Well explained and good to see Josh back on again.
Absolutely Colin! Everyone should have a gaping session!
Whilst important, the one thing I seem to find is that my indoor yardages are slightly shorter than my outdoor yardages. Only thing I can think of is not feeling fully free indoors, but now I just add 3 to 5 yards when playing, depending on how I'm feeling. Good vlog and keep up the great work.
I’ve not found that John, but maybe you ate right. Trackman on a range is probably a better option for you.
Love it Bernie. You don’t look a day over 42! Great content well done 🏌🏽♂️
Thanks Leroy and as you know I’m very immature 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf love it mate channel is trending in a lovely direction
Appreciate that
Yardages on a bag tag, is a great idea. Quick ready reckoner when you’re under pressure trying to earn that pint of your mates.
Got to win that pint Jason! So important 😂
Big Joshy very informative. Great Vid 👌
Thanks Joey-d
I always seem to hit it harder on the sim compared to the course, so I always take that into account when I’m playing.
I think as soon as we get on a sim we become obsessed with distance 😂
Here are 2 vlog ideas, Bernie: If you have access to a GC Quad, film yourself doing the GC Quad skills challenge. Or, if planned filming on a course is rained out, film the round, instead, on the Quad's course simulator.
I like the idea! Particularly the first one mate. Golf on the sim gets awful views unfortunately.
Awesome video, Bernie! Keep them coming! P.S. Washy's a stone cold legend!!!!
That’s the bottom line 😂 thanks Seth!
Thoroughly enjoyed that, Bernie. I'm looking forward to seeing you out on the links as soon as the weather improves.
I’m hoping next week to film some vlogs Kev!
Excellent video, gapping is so important and knowing your "carry" distance is paramount in playing good golf and dropping your scores. Cheers.
Absolutely and it’s so neglected!
Great video Lester! Well done 👏
Cheers my friend! Glad you enjoyed!
Great content yet again, thanks keep up the great work 👍
Cheers Simon! Thanks for watching!
Great video Bernie! You can do it Bernie !!
Thanks Noah! Appreciate the support!
well done Bernie, im liking this series!
Thanks my friend!
GC quad is faulty! I hit it further on the course!
Priceless
Keep up the content Bernie.
You’ll get back to scratch no problem, providing that you do the relevant practice
You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’ve heard that Ian 😂
Arrcos & Shot Scope give great real time gaping stats too.
Brilliant of you have them too Rolf
Love these videos Lester great insight in to a great challenge
Cheers Mick! Praying on the weather now!
Top drawer Lester .. and I’m not saying that just for the balls 😂.. I do a gap test every year, start of the year and during summer to see weather benefits. I’m visually impaired with considerable loss of sight in right eye, so knowing my yardages and being able to confidently hit the distances on my watch is Uber important to me. Destination scratch is great and hopefully looking forward to you in my neck of the woods this year.. 👏💥🏌🏼♂️
Thanks Duncan and that’s great to hear you have regular gap testing and brilliant that they help you to play!
This is looking like a great series. More like this please
Thanks Nick! Glad you are enjoying it. Thanks for watching.
Never had one, definitely need to do one.
Definitely worth doing mate
Well presented with valuable tips along the way. You and Josh make a great team.
Thanks David!
Thanks Bernie, another great vid, it’s made me realise it’s been years since my last gap test so time to book one in before the season!
Thanks Chris! Get one booked in and let us know how you get on!
Interesting & decent gapping. Yeah I have never had a gap test but I’m thinking maybe I should now after watching this. 👍🏻
You will definitely benefit from it David!
Brilliant as usual 😊
Cheers Dave! Glad you enjoyed it!
Loving the series👍 keep it up
Thanks Oli! Appreciate the comment.
Gapping is definitely something I should do nice one Lester
Cheers for watching Matthew!
Quality video boss - following the journey all the way boss!
Thanks my friend! Appreciate it!
Lester , another great vlog 👌👏 oh and you still hit your clubs a long way mate !! Well done and washy is a star ! Regards
Thanks Phil! Email me your address and I’ll send you some balls - lester_barnes@hotmail.com
Another good vlog, Bernie; with great ideas from You and Josh. One thing I have taken from this is that I need to take a good look at a seven wood, that's one gap in my bag that it would fill.
Thanks Dave. It’s a great club especially for the winter! So much easier to hit than a long iron!
Great video Bernie. Never had a gap test before but can see the benefit and definitely something I need to get done 👍🏻
Absolutely mate! As important as a lesson!
Gapping session booked. Good vlog 👍👍
Love that Stephen! Let us know how you get on!
Will try to do a gap test when practice area is dryer!
Probably wise David! Literally hasn’t stopped raining in the south west this winter!
It depends on how my swing is on any particular day as to how far I hit my clubs. I'm working on consistency. I do work regularly in a studio so I have a reasonable idea of how far I hit my clubs. When I feel that I can make decent contact I will move to the next stage. It was an interesting video and I look forward to the next.
Thanks Malcolm! Makes sense what you’ve said.
For gapping I did a dry ball, then did a few separate sessions outdoors. Dry, windy , rain.
I like how much detail you have gone into!
Smart video sir. Keep it up
Cheers Mark!
Great content, really enjoyed it 👍 Thanks
Thanks for watching Andrew!
Nice one Lester , I’m definitely gonna get a gap test session asap .
Love that Nick! Let me know how you get on.
That was very interesting and carry distance varies so much in UK Weather conditions
Absolutely David. You can alter the conditions on the quad, which is a great feature.
Really informative video. Never considered having a gap test. Will be looking into it now.
Love that Darren, let me know how you get on.
Gapping in absolutely critical of anyone wants to improve.. I do one around once every 4-6 months.. or if I’ve noticed something on the course.. last time was because I was getting weird numbers from my 7 iron, the yardages suggested loft and lies needed checking but it was actually pilot error and for some reason I was shutting the face down and jumping it 10 yards further.. need to do them again as just bought new set of titleist T150s which seem slightly longer than my ping i210’s.. 👍👍
Brilliant that you have them regularly Nigel! It’s as important as a lesson in my opinion!
Short game, short game, short game. A sure fire way of lowering your handicap
Absolutely but a gap test is important too Dave.
Yes going to have a gap test, just changed irons to ones with more traditional lofts so need up to date information.
I love that! It will give you so much information.
Good video and nice banter 👏
Cheers Neel!
Great advice, Bernie, to get a proper gap test. Of course, it helps to have a consistent swing like yours, lol.
I’m not always consistent either mate 😂
Understanding your distances and how these change with clubs, age, etc is something that most of us overlook. It does help that you have access to a nice warm golf simulator to check yours. 😊
Most golf clubs / facilities should have one in 2024. A few of the local clubs to me hire out the facilities and it’s relatively cheap, so could do it myself.
Good video mate
Cheers David!
Great vlog. We all think that a 7 iron goes 170 yards if only. Correct carry is a goal. Love the format keep them coming ❤
Totally agree Phil! I was guilty of thinking I’m hitting it further than I am, so need to reassess my expectations on yardage!
Best gapping session I had was on the outside range hitting off grass with a launch monitor as it was more like being on the course. I find the studio to be artificial so if you can get outside its better. Good content but well p...ed off with the distances you hit your clubs, I hit similar distances but its about 2.30am in my dreams 😂😂
😂 absolutely David! Ideally your set up is better! Unfortunately it’s like a degree in temperature and you need a boat to get to the grass range here at the moment 😂
Only had a gap test once, should really get another done.
Slight issue is that I’m sitting in the French Alps with a snapped collarbone so it’ll have to wait a while! 🤦🏻
Keep the videos coming Lester, they’ll keep me going until I can swing a club again 👍🏼
You may have lost distance currently Kevin! 😂 speedy recovery mate
top work by joshy! id book one in just to have a bit of a laugh with the bloke :D
He’s better for a night out Matt 😂
Yeah I think people really underestimate the importance of Gapping, I have bought a new set of clubs and are waiting to have a gap test done, weather permitting. The confidence it gives you when you know exactly what the distance you are going to hit that club is amazing lol x⛳️⛳️
Could not agree more Robert! So so important! As important as a custom fit!
Good video interesting Lester
Thanks Damien! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very good insight and knowledge from washy, guess il have to go and get a gap test now, shame im wayyyy to northern to get one from Churston 😂
I’d definitely recommend one Scott! Washy is a star!
Good work & it looks like time well spent! My issue is the gap between where I hit from & where it lands - always short 😂
You are not alone Martyn! 😂
Noticed some readjusting of left foot during the swing . Interesting seeing your gaps and the interaction of the pro
It’s my trigger Kev, always done it.
Looking forward to seeing the progress over the year . Destination scratch for you destination get back to single figures for me
Good luck Mark! Keep us updated to your progress!
Did something a bit similar in a swing studio near me earlier today. I’d suggest doing a half swing and a three quarter swing test with the wedges as well and adding the data to your bag tag. I’m not even single figures but I’m pretty sure scratch golfers have a good understanding of their wedge distances when not hitting full shots. Even if it’s only when you need to hit a recovery shot you can aim to leave a good yardage for you whilst not needing to hit a full shot.
I definitely think the shorter swings and more detail with the wedges as you suggest would be beneficial Barnaby. Maybe another video 😂
Quality video. Best thing I did was a gap test. Turns out I didn't carry my clubs nowhere near as far as I thought. And I had 3 clubs that went the same distance 😂
My 4 and 5 iron has the same issue Baz 😂 faulty machine as well I suggest! 😂
Currently going through a few swing changes with my club pro, but I'll certainly be getting a gap test before the season starts, currently feel like I don't have a clue what my yardages are, but thankfully I know they are better than before I started the lessons.
That’s great that you have increased distance! The lessons must be working!
Great video Bernie. Glad you got the mics sorted out. So true what you said about distances and how far people think they hit clubs. Got a mate who had the Taylormade P790s and he would always rib me for hitting a 7 iron when I'm hitting a 5 iron but I knew it was just down to the stronger lofts and their marketing to convince people they were hitting it further. I need to sort out my wedges after PW but I'm having lessons now so my swing will change so I'll hang on. Would you be able to get that German/Austrian guy on who knows all about shafts ?. I've seen him on a video and he shows that shafts are just cut from a big length and the sticker is put on randomly and doesn't take into consideration any kick point etc so that will be why some people say they hit a certain club better than any others in the bag because that will be the one that's actually set up correctly. Don't know if he'd only be interested in a Pro though rather than trying to get the manufacturers to sit up and take notice for the rest of us
Dave do you know the guys name?
@@berniebarnesgolf ua-cam.com/video/q2BmcUdggok/v-deo.html
It looks like James Robinson did it 3 years ago oops
I’ll check him out! Thanks!
Good video Lester. Am on a similar mission myself this season to get from 21.8 down to 15.5 . Was fitted for a new set of irons yesterday and my pro is going to gap test them when they arrive. Didn't go much on the fact you were blowing a bit during your test at 41 im 61 .
I’m not fit at the moment Mark 😂 sounds a good pro if he’s gapping you then! Too many would just order a load of wedges without doing it correctly just to save time and make more money!
Interesting that 👍👍. Never had one so might look into it this year. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍
Honestly really beneficial and worth it Russell! So much can be learnt from the test.
My shot scope gives me rough numbers but ill definitely look into it tho
That’s good as well Russell! Really helpful!
Hi Bernie, good video tonight👍. I had a gap test a few years ago but have suggested to my coach we do a gap test at the end of my current lesson block, this will run into Spring so perfect for the start of the new season and hopefully reflect the progress I'm making in my swing/ technique😊.
Sounds like you are on track mate! Hope it’s going well and you are seeing progress!
@@berniebarnesgolf yep, hard work but slowly paying off😁.
Great to hear!
Your gapping is pretty good mate 👍
Cheers Gary, if I can get the top end slightly better I think that would be a massive help!
I'm needing to do this as been a while since last carried it out. Normally try to get 4/5 decent strikes each club and deleting any rubbish so doesn't skew the numbers.
That’s exactly what we did Mark. Deleted any poor strikes (there was lots) 😂
Aping really important more so at the bottom end of the bag (the scoring clubs). Ell done buddy good info
Absolutely John! I may do a mini session and get all the wedges dialled in as you say so important!
@@berniebarnesgolf and if only I could type and spell properly 😂
I knew what you meant 😂 which is worrying enough 😂
I write the yardage for each club on the bottom of the shaft. I think it was Mark Crossfield who i copied. Its a great idea, definitely helps me with my clubing throughout a round.
I like that idea too of writing the yardage down on the club too Paul!
Great video, had a loft, lie and gapping check this week and it was very interesting with my new set of irons, getting older has seriously reduced my speed. I agree I hit it further on the course 😜
That’s great to hear Mark! I no your pain! 😂 what was the conclusion!?
@@berniebarnesgolf my new irons which I had custom fitted @ 2° Upright & built at a well known store in Manchester. All had the incorrect lie apart from the 7 iron and all had to be adjusted. Once they were the correct lie, i was hitting all my previous numbers and a brilliant process to go through and would recommend to anyone, if I hadn’t had it done I would never had known. 😊
That’s a great story! Did they come from the manufacturer like that!?
@@berniebarnesgolf They were custom built at Scottsdales and arrived a couple of weeks ago, it was scary how bad they were, but having a dynamic lie checked at the same time as the gapping was excellent. All sorted now ready for the season ahead 😊
A virtual golf simulator just opened up here in Davao so i plan on next week going and doing a gap test. Also want to check my attack angles especially with driver
That’s cool Brian! Certainly worth visiting! I need to look at that area too as I’m not entirely happy or comfortable with my driver at the moment either.
Pretty good gaps I think we all have issues at the top end of our bags
Hopefully I’ll look at sorting that before the season Nick.
Been hitting things better so I will gap test. But I’ll probably end up trying to do it myself using the toptracer on clubs range. My Italians a bit iffy 😂
😂 my Italian isn’t great either Colin! 😂
I done the gap test last year when I bought new clubs, have to do again soon due to shoulder trouble.😅
Did you find it beneficial Peter?
@@berniebarnesgolf Yes I did. I know that I have to get something better than my hybrid between my 4 iron and 3W. 😉
Love this! Off for a gap test in about an hour!
Thanks David! How did you get on??
@@berniebarnesgolf it went really well, I'm a mid(ish) handicapper and that's first time I've ever done one. All the gaps were between 8-15 so I'm pretty happy with that. Hoping it helps when I next get out in the course to have the confidence on club choice.
That’s good David! For a mid(ish) handicap they are good gaps!
@@berniebarnesgolf cheers Lester... Although I might go back for another mapping of how far each club goes when I top it 🤣
😂 all go the same distance take it from me 😂
Good point that lester I’ve never had a gap test never got round to it lol.
I was fitted about a year and a half ago and not had them tested so yes I think it is time plus my course it very hard and clay base.
I would have thought the pro / club would have messaged you offering a gapping session, it’s the perfect opportunity to give a little back and sell you some more equipment David 😂
@@berniebarnesgolfunfortunately lester we don’t really have a club pro so I had to get fitted else where our club isn’t really a like lots of clubs as we don’t have a pro shop either as it’s owned by one block and that’s the way he runs it lol
Fair enough mate, still think the facility you bought them from are missing a trick.
@@berniebarnesgolfI will go back to them only think it might not be the same person who fitted me in the first but hopefully they will be as good as him maybe better lol😊
Short game lessons Bernie. Putting was looking good with the old rusty Odyssey as well.
I’ve put that putter back in the bag Steve!
@@berniebarnesgolf good move pal 👍
The other one isn’t working Steve! 😂
Evening Lester, very interesting and so relevant to me.
Last week I changed my clubs to a set of Calloway Apex after a fitting.
They are now available for collection, I will definitely book a gap test to check my yardages, personally I know I had too much of a gap between my PW and my 52 degree wedge, be interesting to see the stats with the new clubs.
Great content, Josh really is an ass (et) to your channel, proper Legend Washy.
Enjoy your weekend
Is the gap test included in the purchase Andrew? I also use to include to so that the customer gets a little more and also the possibility of selling more clubs 😂
Thanks to Josh as you said, giving up his time for free for this video.
@berniebarnesgolf , sadly not, but I must say the service I received from Silvermere in Surrey was top notch, the Quad machine is some bit of kit!
Heard great things about Silvermere!
@@berniebarnesgolf , the best golf shop I've visited in the UK, highly recommended
Good that, I really think a gap test benefits a consistent striker like yourself. I used to find top tracer useful to find out how far I hit different clubs. Why have I not noticed before that your trigger is turning your left toe out just before you swing ? If I was you I'd try and get hold of a really old Ping Zing 2 iron 😂
Have you not noticed it before Phil? 😂 I’ve always done that. The Ping 2 iron only likes the summer at his age 😂
Something to think about. How do you simulate the differences in distance caused by weather changes ? It’s good to have this baseline data but what difference does heavy rain make? How to quantify that ?
You can alter the conditions on the Quad Brian, change temperatures and even put wind in. I guess it depends on how detailed you want it to be.
Is it possible to be in a bad mood with Washy around? What a beauty he is! That was great to watch Lester! Just the right amount of time spent hitting and talking. 3 wood does appear to need a dial back 💪🏻 Haven’t had a gap test done, but hoping to get new irons before this season, finally, and might do it then. Season is around the corner as you say, in about 3 and 1/2 months 😂
Think the top end of the bag needs looking at as you say Tyler! Forget how lucky we are with the weather here.
@@berniebarnesgolf I try not to bring up the weather too much, pure jealousy on my end! It’s why we love to play so much when the good weather does arrive!
Definitely need to take advantage of the good weather. I’m planning on playing, practicing and filming more this summer than I normally do.
@@berniebarnesgolf Destination scratch! Have to put the work in, and can’t wait to watch Lester! I’m currently a 9, so maybe I’ll do Destination 7? Always need goals.
Need to set yourself goals Tyler! So important!
Just got new TM wedges. Spent 3 sessions at the range, to get the yardages correct, and imprinted in my head.
Normally do a through the bag yardage test before every “summer” season starts.
Played with guys this week in Abu Dhabi who had no idea how far each club went, crazy
First comment Andrew! Email me your address - lester_barnes@hotmail.com I’ll send you a dozen balls!
It shocks me when players have no clue how far they hit it 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf thank you kind sir.
I’ll send them Monday!
Never had a gap test.😊
Considering having one Wayne?
Having just returned from golf after many years, when i used to play it was all from the 150yd marker 😂, now ive ditched the mizuno blades gone for some new Srixons and been doing my gapping at the range on the trackman with ball convert on, whats peoples thoughts on this would it be accurate enough ?
Yeah the trackman is great outdoors and will mirror the current conditions. Keep checking them though Nick as you get back into it your strike should improve and the distance increase!
Hi Bernie, is there much of a difference doing gapping indoors to on the course? I'm guessing wouldn't make too muck of a difference, but are hitting off mats an issue?
I would say ideally you would do it outside on grass David, the strike off the mat will generally be slightly higher on the face. Should be within a few yards which is fine for me.
Here’s any Interesting answer I hope… I spoke to a local PGA pro about my coming to film a gap test a few years ago for my channel. He had a trackman system etc and an indoor set up so I thought it would be good To promote that people could come and do this with him. However he dismissed the idea. His reasoning was… and every different day you could swing differently, your body might feel better or worse, and also outdoor different weather conditions or course conditions which could affect everything. So there was no point in finding out. At my level with an inconsistent swing would it be worth doing?
Good video today! I like the series!
I’d say it’s more important for better strikers / lower handicappers, however it’s not just yardage it’s used for. You can see which clubs you hit well and the ones you don’t for example and whether you are carrying clubs that you don’t use!
Don’t knock the 7 wood, great club, I’ve got one in my bag (as well as a 4 iron which) but it’s way more consistent, so I’ll most probably drop the 4i & get a 5 wood to bridge the gap between 7 wood & 3 wood
Love that Lawrence! Return of the 7 wood! 😂
Never had a gap test, always been worried of not hitting the middle of the club everytime, I have such a discrepancy with my clubs, one shot could be 20 yards further than the next one with the same club🤦🏼♂️
Yeah I get that Jordon and consistency of strike is so important.
Great, video. Got to work on that 5 iron or you'll need a 9 wood 😂
I know! Struggling a bit with my ribs, so blaming that 😂
Gapping is a must for me especially from 150yds in as I think these are the scoring shots which score , save pars or hopefully makes a birdie..It’s surprising how many mid handicap players like me don’t know their distances with any of their clubs a chuck it and chance it 😊
Would you consider having a gapping session then Peter?
@@berniebarnesgolf hi Bernie it’s taken me about a year getting my gapping right with my current set of irons and has meant ditching some and buying different clubs especially around gap to lob wedge , that’s was the problem for me when buying a full set of same make
Sorry Bernie mis read your reply , probably not as I’m now 71 but I’d always recommend in foresight doing it before buying a one size fits all set of clubs 👍
Just had one today Lester with my new irons
Love that Bryan! Conclusion??
@berniebarnesgolf really enjoyed it glad I had it done hit my new srixon irons further than my old titleist
Awesome you had a good experience!
Mind the gap test. I’ve been working my gaping out based on my shot scope data. Do you think this ok or would it be better to do a proper test?
That’s a good way to do it too! Just mate sure if you chip with a usual club you sort the data out. That’s pretty accurate too!
i wonder if i would benefit from a putting lesson- I often give strokes away on the greens.
I definitely need one 😂 try and find someone with the SAMLAB Jess, it’s a brilliant bit of kit and will definitely help.
Looking to book a gap test early March. I have not had one for about 2 years. New irons and driver since so I really need one. Would you do full and half swings for wedges? Good vid Lester 👍👍
That’s exactly what I’m going to do Gary! A little more detail with the wedges!
Gapping session booked in for next week!!
Awesome! Let us know how you get on!
There's nothing wrong with a 7 wood. I've gamed one since before hybrids came into being and it's a great go to club.
I really like mine Nigel, any dodgy lie 190 out I hit it!
A putter test is definitely needed 😂😂
Alright John! The ribs are still sore! Bit of sympathy please 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf Sorry mate couldn't help myself
Love the banter mate 😂
Need to get the gapping correct
So important James!
Where's the 2 iron? Back in the summer I would assume.
It’s in the garage Iain 😂 it will probably appear in the summer again 😂
6 iron is my longest iron these days. Josh knows the crack, my 4 & 5 iron are out and replaced by hybrids and im a single figure handicapper. Just need to bend a few wedges now 😂
Exactly Chris! I was always a massive fan of long irons, but why make it more difficult then it needs to be!? The 7 wood is so much easier to hit for me and gets it airborne!
@@berniebarnesgolf I used to carry a 2 Iron 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤣 yeah I find the hybrids easier to control distance with too
Agreed 😂 it will probably get a run out in he summer though 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf mine all went to better home, a younger, fast model who can swing fast enough to hit them properly 🤣
😂 brilliant 😂
I changed my clubs last year and with the stronger lofts l had 2/3 sessions to establish my gapping, l now use hybrids during the winter as l found they give me that extra carry l need to maintain distance with all the extra clothing we need in the south west especially this year. Keep going with the vlogs as they give a great insight into what it takes to achieve scratch.
Agree Robert! Finding the extra woods are giving me so many more options. Hitting a 2 or 4 iron in the wet mud is counterproductive for me.
@@berniebarnesgolf it pays to have options especially at this time of year. Due to the recent conditions no winter competitions at our place so just cutthroat friendlies in a group of about 16 guys. I have to play of scratch in the group as experience pays during wet and frosty conditions. I be down your way in April and just hope the weather improves. Keep practicing it always pays off in the end.😀
If you are around pop in and say hi! I’ll even buy you a coffee.
You on but l will buy the coffee, l went through a rough period with my golf in my 50’s but got back to holding a plus handicap eventually. These days just happy to play. I contact you later in the year and my offer of a game at Enmore is always there. Best regards as always Rob
I’d love to come and play enmore
Intresting to see your driver only goes a few yards further than the driver, I've had the same problem, I've tried a few things but some of is purely strike related or down to loft, as in Lack Of F@#%ing Talent😅 lol😂 loving the channel and vids, presented like one of the lads down the local club offering advice and not all glossed up pushing new products etc etc
It’s only a cheap driver so may need to grab all of the ones I’ve got and get some numbers on the quad and decide which to game for 2024.
