  • A short documentary on legendary pianist and entertainer "Ragtime Bob" Darch produced by Brian Hawkins in 2002. Bob Darch was one of the ragtimers of the 1950s and '60s who sought out the original composers and helped revive the careers of Joseph Lamb, Eubie Blake, and many others. There are not many video clips of Bob Darch available, so I thought I would share this for everyone on my channel.

Bob Darch introduced me to ragtime in Virginia City, Nev. when, as a later told him, I wasn't even tall enough to reach his belt buckle. I was completely transfixed ! Of course, I had to learn how to play this wonderful music. It became something of a lifetime preoccupation with me. I have many wonderful memories of Bob. He was generous to a fault with his time and attention. When I heard him at the Sedalia Festival years later, he was playing in a huge circus tent (completely filled, of course) AND I remember walking up Ohio St. and from a block and a half away, I heard this huge ROAR go up. It was, of course, Bob spell-binding the crowd. No other performers elicited such a thunderous response. Bob Darch WAS ragtime...

Technically, he was not in the "era of ragtime" haha. He was in the "ragtime revival" era, many years later.
