I remember this. I also remember that horse Bright Beam. He ran as a pacemaker on several occasion that I watched back then. Must say, watching this now, is it still acceptable for a horse acting as a pacemaker to not run out a true race ? Here , the jockey made no effort to run a true race once Mill Reef went past. Sat back, and made no further effort. Not good.

how did kalanisi not win that 2000 eclipse? came flying up and went past GC then something clicked in giants causeways head and he found something from nowhere. Kalanisi must have been sick of the sight of him by years end. one of the greatest racehorses ever. dont forget kalanisi went on to easily beat Montjeu in the champion stakes and win the breeders cup turf. GC found his match in Tiznow but having only raced on the dirt that one time he went down guns blazing. both these horses were by far the best in europe that year. great days.
George Duffield was my favourite jockey for many years great to see that Giants Causeway race again so typical of George (and the horse ) you could also have shown Environment Friend's win I had a decent bet (for an 18 year old) at 28-1!
Sea the stars I thought beat the best field with group one winners in behind,,Rip v w and conduit who went on to easily win a st leger,, different races ,, different opinions but he was amazing,,
rip van winkle won the sussex stakes and then a strong juddmonte the following year and others like fame and glory swerved a rematch with STS and went for a penalty kick in the irish derby. i still cant understand the criticism of sea the stars. he won a group 1 every month of the flat season may to october, won at 8f, 10f and 12f, the guineas, the derby, the eclipse, the juddmonte, the irish champion, the arc de triomphe, never been done and will never be done again. its not his fault that other horses wouldnt take him on and when they did at longchamp it was his best performance. i rarely see frankel being slated for beating low quality fields ( The duel on the downs!!) his only win against a top quality field was his last in the champion stakes and STS ran over all possible trips and in every european country with a top class race. frankel won some of his group 1s by some distance but he was never really pushed out of fear of losing and its a sad indictment of racing today he never ran in the 2012 arc. in my opinion sea the stars is best racehorse seen in europe so far this century and his achievements have yet to be bettered.

Dancing Brave was the most impressive , then Mill Reef then Pebbles’ brilliant defeat of that season’s Arc winner.
