How to train Retrieval / “Get it” / Service Dog training

- This is the first video in a series on training your dog retrieval.
Although this channel is mainly focused on service dogs this is a fun thing to teach your pet dog as well.

Thanks for sharing the video. My puppy will be coming home next week. I purchased the puppy to be a companion. I am mobility impaired (full time power chair user) and recently became aware owner training is a possibility. While formal task training will not start for a while, I appreciate this series of video as it is less available online as opposed to general puppy and obedience training.

I think it would be more helpful if you used an untrained dog for your series. So we can see the actual progression
I would love to use an untrained dog for a video. The problem tends to come with video time (filming, editing and finished video time) I can probably make 3-4 training how to videos in the time it would take to make one using an untrained dog. This video is 12 1/2 minutes long, and I assume you watched the whole thing. If I use an untrained dog I’m looking at more 25 minutes for the video. Would you watch the whole video? Or just skip to the part you know to know to teach your dog? What would be the max amount of time you would watch me train an untrained dog? Look forward to your input! Will be very helpful when I make those types of videos
She won’t play with it but she will hold, carry and drop how do I get her to pick it up without playing? I’m using treats but she gets distracted by treats so I stopped using them
If my puppy likes running away from me so I can chase him how do I lure him next to me? He comes very near but if he sees you move he runs away lol
First put him on a leash, when training. This will prevent running away and show him it’s funnest to be with you and get a whole bunch of treats when interacting with you. Also don’t play keep away with him. Keep away shows a dog how fun it is to run away from you. Instead play chase (you!) run away with him and have him run after you. Show him how fun it is to be with you.

Sometimes if necessary running /or going the opposite direction works good too, while calling them.
