Last time I was in LA was 54 years ago. I took the train up from the naval station in San Diego... Train is still just as slow. My question to day is the same as it was then..."Where's the City" At least when riding through NYC there is never any question as to where the city is.
The honest answer to your question: there is no city center in the true sense of the word! LA hasn't had a true city center since the building of the freeways and the tearing up of the once extensive "Red Line" streetcar network perpetuated its current sprawled-out, amorphous form.
