As a jazz drummer, I was always taught that when the tempo was established, it was my job to maintain that tempo, even if the soloist or any other player tried to "rush" it. If any piece sounds "loose", it's often because the other players are pushing the established tempo beyond where it should be. Sorry, just my opinion. Cheers!
