  • buddy of mine brought a 140 over to my house to put in my front yard to sell it had a running issue at first so he got a new coil to put on the tractor. He came back with the coil cause someone was going to buy it and we found it had no spark when it would not start. I started working on it when he left to see if I could fix it the fix was simpler than I thought it was going to be. This tractor is curently for sale if anyone has any interest if this is still in the description than it is still for sale. Do you guys think I should buy it off of him and fix it up. The voltage regulator is only for charging it has nothing to do with the spark on a Kohler K series. Wire from the points to coil negative and condenser to coil negative, then 12v power to coil positive and it should run. Also leaving the key switch on will ruin a coil, they will boil internally and sometimes even explode. When you set points you are supposed to roll the engine over until they are open to there widest point, then set to .020". The points should completely close at TDC on the compression stroke and be wide open at TDC on the exhaust stroke which is where the engine should be when they are being set. You can't just slap them on and set the gap to .020" at any position in the engines rotation.

Thanks. I did think about the coil but usually it’s never that simple atleast in my experience

If You Live The Positive Side Of The Coil And Short the Negative side . The Coil will Fire.. If It On The Engine Or Banch...

How do you hook up the voltage regulator on a 140 series 13hp kohler when you only have 1 positive an 2 AC lines when the old was + - +

Its a 14 horse and the two are alternating curent coming from the stator when the one in the middle is DC that goes to the keyswitch and also charges the battery.

Ok I got a stumper for ya got me a 70s or so jd 110 with kohler 8 k181s and it came to my shop for no spark theres no saftey switches theres no pto all that's been removed.this doesnt have a coil it's got a magneto, with stator, when I pulled the fly wheel.it must of ate a rope of some type because everything under it was wrecked the wires to the coil or mag gone as well to the stator.the plug wire was held in by the holder and screw.i replaced all that.new mag and stator from jd.also gave it new points condenser, and it still has no spark.points gap 20 thousands spark plug gap 25 thousands thought that was to high so now it's at 15,still no spark 3rd spark plug. Everything is new I even replaced the solenoid and got the right ignition switch. If you cant figure it out I guess I got a JD 110 for sale for parts or do you think I'd be better off finding a motor that actually runs.love your video.new subscriber....ps I'm serious if I cant get it to run I'm gonna push it off a perfect flying plane.

I've never worked on a K181 that had the mag under the flywheel or seen one my brother has one but I have never taken it apart. If you get the keyswitch that puts power out to the coil you can put a regular automotive coil on it and run it the motor has points all you would need is switch the hey switch out and run a wire to the coil from the switch. before you do that though unplug the kill wire from the mag and see if it gets spark after that you might have a short in your ground wire, if that doesn't fix your problem where are you located I might buy it off you. Also I'm guessing its a 71 cause in 71 they used K181's that had mags.

@@themaniacmower I figured it out theres 2 small wires coming off the mag.one goes to points one goes to ignition or key switch.but before it goes to switch it runs to a volt meter gauge everytime I tried the key it would kill the spark because the volt meter was bad. I replaced the rubber washers and now everything works beautiful as it should everything was brand new I gave it a new battery and tuned up the carb and it runs great.owner was very pleased....I figured it be something overlooked as I was thinking that the 40yr old wiring might have some issues so I fixed all that too.with new harnesses and all new 10 gauge wire. Wish I could send you a picture of it looks real sharp too.

Why didn't you just test the coil??
