    0:00 - 0:54 The announcement
    0:55 - 1:21 Why this is different
    1:22 - 1:37 Some context
    1:38 - 2:37 About you (and yes, I'm strange)
    The first is that I'm studying trichology. Becoming a trichologist has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember and for a number of reasons, now is absolutely the best time for me to be doing it. You may know that I have a master's in molecular biology but that background only serves to enhance what I'm learning! I'm loving the course so far and I cannot wait to tell you more about trichology and hair science.
    What sorts of hair science and or trichology topics do you want me to tackle on this channel?
    I'm still in Trinidad but planning a return to Europe, likely the UK this time. It'll be my first time living in the UK since I was 12 so that's a HUGE change. Given that I've since lived in Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, it almost feels more natural to move to another foreign country than to move back. I'm excited but anxious as this will bring up a lot for me.
    I naturally work in creative obsessive bursts followed by lulls and I'm figuring out how to harness the highs and mine as much good quality content out of them as possible whilst not burning myself out.
    My next video will be all about trichology, including how it's regulated, the problems in the sector.
    What more do you want to see from me as I navigate the fascinating world of hair and scalp science and starting a cosmetics company?
    I help new and overwhelmed naturals build healthy relationships with their hair. Book a session with me today. naturallyhighcoaching.as.me/

      Ooooh this is an excellent one. I would LOVE to explore this further. In my reading so far, I've noticed that studies shy away from mentioning climate but I imagine it must have an impact on hair growth, other than UV rays damaging the hair, humidity increasing moisture levels etc. One of my biggest issues with hair research to date is that studies in this area are lacking. For example, they'll conclude that African hair grows more slowly but there's no intraethnic exploration of how different hair types respond to different climates. I'll see what I can do.

    Congrats on your new path. I wonder if you have a view about the no oils, no butters movement

    • @NaturallyHigh
      @NaturallyHigh  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you!
      EXCELLENT EXCELLENT question! I do have some views on it. My initial thoughts are to ask the question: what are your aims for your hair? How do you want it to look and behave?
      There's a good amount of research that shows the effectiveness of using lipids (i.e. oils/butters) as a means to strengthen the hair, prevent protein loss and reduce friction between strands. All these have the effect of increasing the longevity of the strands.
      After attending this year's International Conference on Applied Hair Science (put on by TRI Princeton), I learnt that researchers do not yet fully know how oils affect water absorption. A major argument against using oils in the hair is that they keep the hair from being hydrated. However, while we do know that oils slow down water absorption, it is not yet known whether they actually reduce water absorption capacity. This is also extremely difficult to quantify. As an example, let's look at coconut oil. We know that having it in your hair reduces swelling during the washing process and mitigates damage. What we don't know is whether, if coconut oil laden hair were exposed to water over time, it would eventually absorb as much water as clean hair. There's a paucity of research on the specifics of some of our haircare practices so anecdotal evidence will simply have to suffice for now.
      Looking at things practically, it's clear to see that different people want different things for their hair. The stylist opponents of oils and butters have years of experience with haircare and different heads of hair. They must have a reason for saying what they're saying. From what I understand, they help Black women "find their curls". This is a VERY different goal from what I and other naturals aim for with our styling and content. My own experience, anecdotal evidence and reading have shown me that infrequent gentle handling and liberal application of certain substances (oils, butters, products or a mix of all 3) can do wonders for softness, smoothness, "manageability", pliability etc.
      As washing frequency increases, so too does damage to the strands. (This is a very simplified statement, which doesn't account for the effect of pollution on hair health. To my knowledge, there's no study comparing which is more damaging: washing or pollution.) However, as it decreases, risks for scalp flare ups in sensitive people increase. Some people also don't like the look and feel of their hair when it's not squeaky clean. I'm not one of those people. I'd love to explore this topic further in future content.
      Essentially, their approach is certainly intriguing and the prospect of shorter washdays and defined curls is appealing. I would love to explore it further (perhaps next year) but for the time being, I'm sticking to what I know and helping people get to where I am using approaches I know work.
      🤯🤯🤯 so much! Sorry!

    • @NaturallyHigh
      @NaturallyHigh  3 роки тому

      my mentor and a fantastic trichologist, Jacky van Driel Nguene was in the comment section recently - maybe she'll see this post. We haven't looked at scalp conditions yet on my course so I don't feel equipped to answer this question. My understanding (probably similar level to yours) is that seb derm is an extreme form of dandruff. My guess would be that response to treatment might be an indicator. From what I've heard, people with SD experience extreme itching, inflammation and discomfort when they go too long between washes. With dandruff, the symptoms are less severe. I imagine that there would be redness with SD and not so much with dandruff. Maybe I'll come back next month once we've looked at this on my course.

    What’s the hierarchy in terms of knowledge and degrees between, trichology and cosmetology and cosmetic chemist?
    .?You know like you have undergrad postgrad bachelor Master PHD etc… I know PHD is the highest for something like medicine for example…so what is the highest when it comes to hair? I googled it but still a bit confusing.

    • @NaturallyHigh
      @NaturallyHigh  3 роки тому +2

      This is a really good question and it's not so easy to answer because: 1) the trichology sector is unregulated so the knowledge and experience levels are inconsistent; and 2) people enter trichology from different backgrounds. Some people may enter with a hairdressing background, for example, which is really helpful since they'll be learning more about an area in which they already have experience. Others (like myself) enter from a science background - also helpful for analytical skills. 3) there's overlap - as a trichology student, I have classes on cosmetic chemistry and I will also learn a bit about hairstyling. 4) "Levels" in trichology have been unregulated up until recently. There are trichology schools, such as the IoT, IaT and (in progress) CTSP, which make use of these to indicate how much training a practitioner has. I'll have to make a video on this because it's a LOT.
      A cosmetic chemist is trained to create formulations for cosmetic products. Cosmetic chemistry is generally taught at the MSc level. Some people become cosmetic chemists with a chemistry or pharmacy background. While trichologists are trained to assess, diagnose and treat hair and scalp conditions, cosmetic chemists focus on cosmetics. Cosmetic chemists work to create formulations for the skin and its appendages: the hair and nails.
      Trichologists do not generally practise cosmetology. We do however (I say this as a rising trichologist) need to understand haircare practices and "masking" techniques for certain hair and scalp conditions to help our clients. Trichologists are more focused on the health of the hair and scalp from a holistic perspective.
      Then there are the others you didn't mention: dermatologists and hair scientists. Dermatologists are medical doctors with many (~8) additional years of training specialising them in the skin. Given that there are over 2000 known skin conditions and many of these are life-threatening, you should understand why trichologists are still needed. Hair and scalp conditions, while psychologically distressing, are not often deadly. Hair scientists (like those at Monasterium and TRI Princeton) do research on the physical, chemical and biological properties of the hair and scalp. This research is consumed by cosmetics companies, medical professionals, trichologists, and even hairdressers to improve the way they work. In general, these researchers are not directly in contact with people and their hair. So while someone may have a PhD in a hair science-related topic, they likely won't be your go-to for your hair/scalp problem.

    • @Ossouko
      @Ossouko 3 роки тому

      @@NaturallyHigh Aaah ok that’s good to know thank you very much indeed for your response! I did thought about dermatologists but hairdressers don’t usually have a qualification in dermatology.
