As a Filipino who's been living in Europe, I wasn't really into OPM even when I was based in the PH. However, my introduction to KPOP & K-dramas led me back to my roots - Filipino music! I was a casual listener of IU and Blackpink and new to K-dramas when I saw a YT video of Cha Eunwoo singing a Filipino song during his Manila fanmeet in 2019. I got curious and looked up "Kathang-Isip." This led me to check out Ben&Ben's music, and later on stumbled upon IV of Spades and SB19. Their music made me revisit OPM and, since I've listened to more SB19 music and got to know their stories, I got hooked! In my case, KPOP became instrumental in me revisiting my roots and appreciating Filipino music. I think if Filipinos would be more open and just authentically enjoy music (like we claim we do), we wouldn't easily brush off something new with immense talent (PPOP) just because of our first impression (they're like KPOP/they're KPOP copycats/they're not OPM/their music is not authentic).

PPop Groups do need more exposure on social media. Philippines have so many talented artists yet I somehow get the feeling that many younger people just choose to turn a blind eye to the rising popularity of PPOP in the Philippines. It saddens me to think that there are still people who seem to underestimate or doubt the potential or caliber of the PPOP groups. There are those that even mock some groups for being "copycats" or "wannabes" when in fact they're all "influenced" or "inspired". They're on all music platforms and as for marketing, we Filipinos can do that on social media. Let's face it, we may not have as much funds as other countries but we have the people to spread the word. It takes an open mind to really listen and see the great potential of our very own PPOP groups. We do have the talent, the creativity, the musicality, the caliber. What they need is the support of the Filipino people. 😘

I don’t really hear Ppop much on the radio. If you really are not a listener of different kinds of music and you just depend on the premade playlists on music apps, you won’t stumble upon ppop. It is really up to us, if someone is not curious enough to look for similar sounds or artists, then they won’t know what ppop is. Personally I don’t think it sounds like kpop. There is still something different in ppop that I don’t hear in kpop. That alone, gives it the distinction. Parang feeling ko nga yun kpop nagadjust na rin ng tunog. Mukha kasing marami-rami na ring Koreans ang nakakarinig ng OPM, and they hear how varied Filipino music is. Ang Koreans kasi talagang mostly kpop yata eh. Pero marami rin silang mga magagaling na indie artists.

So many good points!!! I like that they are open to giving PPOP a chance because in reality, I was also skeptic at first. I'm a big fan of Brit and American rock and pop, R&B and hiphop. I also loved old OPM because of its western influences mixed with Filipino folk music. We can't be blamed on this, as we were colonized by Westerners for so many centuries. And American pop culture has always been part of our culture. I never learned to appreciate kpop because it was very foreign to my ears. I found it too electronic, candy pop, and felt it was a ripoff of western pop and black culture but with better tech, bigger budget and marketing on a global scale. I didn't like the old songs of SB19 because it had a touch of kpop (not my preference). Nothing against it. I know it was because of music trends and consumers' taste. I understand they had to make songs that the public wanted to consume, and to make money for their bosses, right? It's all about the profit.
But this is the thing. Ppop has become a movement, not just the obsession for fame and profit anymore. I think the movement aims to reawaken OPM and PPOP with a fresh new face, challenge our OPM artists, local music producers, tech, etc to be better (because the talent is already innate), and this time, showcase the music on a global scale. And it's great that there is PPOP Con, a place where the artists unite and give out their best performances. No longer competing in numbers but performing as a family.. a community. For a purpose.
As a patriotic Filipino who believe in the Filipino talent, it makes me so proud. I noticed the evolution and the hard work SB19 has made, together with the PPOP community, to break free from the stigma and be their own once they got out of the reins of their old korean company. They became their own bosses and literally raised our flag. I mean, if we, Pinoys, made kpop and western pop trending for decades, I think it's high time we support our very own. Now is the time. It really is the best time for it. We just have to try listening to the music. It won't hurt.
The guy who said that PPOP is now tapping into our OPM roots is right. It truly the key to making PPOP stand out and become mainstream in our own country. It really is a collective effort. Support our artists because by god, OPM and PPOP music is so good! And Filipinos are even better when they sing LIVE! Our artists are the real deal! The tireless efforts ALL groups have done, esp SB19 and Alamat, to make PPOP stand out should be commended and supported.

As a previous casual myself, they have valid points. Actually, I was not even a casual listener, like I totally didn’t have PPop in my radar… but the moment I found out Mapa was sung by SB19 and when Gento came out this year, I just couldn’t help but take a second look. Now aside from SB19, I have started to listen to Alamat, BINI, G22, Hori7on.
And you know what, I didn’t like the ‘electronic’ sounding music, any dance party songs and I didn’t like any rap songs too. Like they said, I wasn’t into the genre itself. BUT now, play Pablo’s ‘La Luna’ and I could sing along with the rap lines from start to finish :) Also, I grew up in the era of alternative rock - Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, etc. So that’s the genre I like - alternative rock, acoustic music, and the traditional heartfelt ballads. But now, I looove PPop too!! If someone like me transitioned, I’m sure the others will eventually like PPop too.
I was so surpised, when I actually sat down and gave time to listen, I found out that PPop IS OPM!…. OPM is music that’s composed, performed by Pinoy’s for Filipinos. OPM is all genre, not just ballads.
We like these type if content El! Good job. Do have a watch party or invite your friends who are not into PPop and have them watch and really take the time to listen. It would be interesting to find out what they think. :)

love this... the unfiltered takes of the casuals made me realize the path that PPop still has to take. Malayo na, pero malayo pa.
What only irks me is the common remark of Kpop copycat. I think what we need here isn't just mere marketing but spreading awareness that the 'sing and dance' genre isn't owned by a certain country. It's just that KPop popularized it, more so perfected it. However, this doesn't mean that all acts that feature dancing while singing are already a copy of KPop. Heck, this genre already existed wayback then. People's mindset are just fixated with the idea that Koreans owned this genre as they are the ones who popularized it so much in the international scene.
People should realize that the major distinction between Kpop and Ppop is the incorporation of Filipino culture. OPM is heavily injected in the ballad tracks of Ppop groups. SB19' MaPa, Alamat's Sa Panaginip na lang, KAIA's Dalawa, and many more. These songs are nothing alike to Kpop.
I hope Filipinos will just give them a chance coz they all deserve to be recognized. Anyway, thanks for this vid 💛

Very valid points from casuals and non listeners. Hard to deny the Kpop comments cuz inspired naman talaga ang Ppop from some of the aspect of the KPOP formula especially in the early stages where wala pa talaga audience
But as we know naman PPOP already is starting to show more of their own unique takes to their own PPOP formula (ex. More authenticity in individual personalities, the humor, own promotion methods, the sound and diversity of the music, the outfits, choreo and the video production, etc.) but di pa lang talaga ma-nonotice yan ng mga bagong fans, casuals, let alone non-listeners.
100% agree na one of the main missing puzzle pieces is the support in terms of marketing the industry. It should really be boosted pa by the government (like other east Asian countries) kasi private companies like 1Z won't be enough, or at least won't be as fast in terms of timeframe ng pag laki ng reach. Sad to see na okahit na 3M na subscribers ng SB19, the rest of the groups are still below 150k subs, PPOP deserves more audience -- but hopeful na we will reach there. in God's time, I guess.

Hence, when you browse the internet, you'll find that pop genre is very similar wherever you are in the world. Even pop music in the past has the same formula in comparison to the music you can hear today, especially Kpop.
Pop has been there before, and korean just popularized it. But you can't say that ppop, thai pop, vietnamese pop, indian pop, european pop is a copy of kpop.

And bakit ba galit yung mga tao sa kpop influence comment eh wala naman masama dun kasi nga pop is a shared genre and it’s ok to get influences as long as you learn to put your own touch to it. Too naive din naman of us to say na walang korean industry influence ang ppop esp sa start, eh mismo mahalima started from a korean based training and company, they are big fans of different generations of kpop groups, they started as cover groups, ofcourse they would get some aspects of kpop to some extent - and nothing wrong with that imo. It's sad how Filipinos only think of ppop as being focused on pop or fast-paced songs and that their interests lie still in what we're used to hearing for Filipino songs. That's why I love how SB19 was turning the so-called ppop into just purely calling it an opm for them, because definitely their songs are all kinds of genres already. They have mellow, ballad, rock, pop, and many more.
Also, to even think that just because a melody of a song is an upbeat one doesn't have a deep and painful meaning to it, well, I guess, people do listen to the beats without knowing the very essence of music itself or what the music was trying to convey. Anyway, I do agree that we all have different types of music tastes, but the harsh reality of most Filipinos accepting PPOP or even supporting it is, I guess, still very thin unless they listen to the songs with an open mind and heart.
PPOP has a lot of potential to go big like KPOP because Filipinos are very talented artists and performers, pero kung sa bansang ito na ni mga athletes nga ahy di masuportahan, pano pa kaya ang ibang mga talents? Kung SB19 lang ang magpopromote sa PPOP, kawawa na rin naman sila kakabuhat. Well, in fact, they also have a lot on their plates.

Then i continued listening to the other songs in their Pagtatag EP and man, I fell into the rabbit hole. There was no turning back for me, i hated myself for listening to their EP coz i fell hard. They have soooo many good songs with back story and their songs really uplifted my spirit. Is it really a "Kpop copycat"? Or are we just told by the general consensus that they are "Kpop Copycats"? Kasi if we apply this to other musicians in the Philippines as well, why aren't they told that they are "Country Copycats" or "Hip-Hop copycats" when the staple genre of OPM is also originally foreign influenced? In this, I can say that we are just told lang talaga ng public opinion na sila ay copycats when these ppop groups are straying away from these allegations.
Because as far as I can see and hear, all of these PPop groups are singing in Filipino, have Filipino elements in their songs, and more explorative outside the genre of ballad in the norm of OPM-ness (like puro love songs na lang, bawat open ng radyo, romantic love songs na lang lagi). It's just interesting because it seems like a Filipino standpoint for the music to be a valid "ORIGINAL FILIPINO" is by sticking to the a closed genre of music. Why are we so close minded in changes and influences in the culture and arts? Is it really that hard to understand that arts, in this case Music, it has no boundaries? Why is it always taken in a form of cynicism (naming them Kpop wannabes) when they try to experiment styles other than ballad?? Music should be experimental, creative, and dynamic. I don't really understand this Filipino Mentality that when it somehow go against the current and normal trends in Filipino Music, it is always perceived as an imitation and inauthentic 😶
