This is why this is one of my favorite Katy Perry songs. For awhile I just listened to the song because it was a bop. Then I actually listened and realized what she was actually saying. The song is incredibly hypnotic which allows you to be distracted from the horrors of the world.

1) In 2017, Katy released a political song Chained To The Rhythm, before that she was very vocal in politics, CTTR did pretty well on charts. But then she released Bon Appetit with Migos. Migos is an openly transphobic trio and Katy is LGBT+ supporter. Which means Capitol forced her
2) Bon Appetit was set to release solo but it got a feature on it on the last minute, and Katy got so much hate from it. When she was accused of being transphobic, her team did NOTHING to fix her image.
3) In 2018, Capitol's CEO confirmed that they were "disappointed" by Witness' unsuccess. And stated that they have a plan for Katy that they're excited for. But nothing happened in 2018. You can read his full conversation here
4)Katy released Harley's In Hawaii in 2019, which was a fan-favourite, was the fastest Katy Perry song ever to enter iTunes USA Top 10. But the song wasnt sent to the radios, it got sent later when the hype died down.

Everyone who listened to the lyrics beyond the chorus knows it's a social critique, but people disagree on what it's critiquing. Is it criticizing people's inability to express their own opinions, or express them in a healthy way? Or does it criticize capitialism in the music industry? I think that Katy had good intentions, but she could've chose one specific theme and stuck to it, and I do agree that if her message was the first priority, she should've self-produced the song.

Katy is so clever. Don't mistake her for some ditsy pop woman! She knows exactly what she's doing and I applaud her for it. She knows she has a platform and what better way to air current important issues than within her music videos such as this? She does it so subtly too but it's so obvious. I remember being obsessed with this when it came out and my mum saying “it’s just a generic pop song, I don’t get why you like it so much”. But that’s literally the point. (Although I disagree and found it extremely catchy), that entire point is that it’s that generic pop song that everyone loved but no one really fully listened to or understood. This song is captivating and the lyrics have deep meaning. Well done Katy. This one is always in my playlists.

Well, it's a lot of things. It's technically not super deep, but it's one of my favorite songs of hers simply 'cause it's just like points at how we stick to the status quo of society even if it hurts us little, simply because it feels safe. Change is necessary to improve. But change is also scary, so we stick to what we know. That's why the song is about people chained to the rhythm, even though they can leave at any point. No one wants to leave because they feel safe where they are, even though we all know that something ain't right about that place.

I hope so too. But as an American I'll tell you for a fact that this nation is being controlled by Evangelicals (extreme form of Christianity). They are persecuting anyone that isn't what they'd call normal. I myself, come from an Orthodox Jewish community and I'm Agnostic, Lesbian, and Progressive. The way she created this song to make the listener purposefully uncomfortable is just so crazy. The topics, lyrics, and visuals are very serious, but the song is still a pop song with the upbeat style and catchiness. It makes you want to sing along but uncomfy because of the irony. To sing along would be doing exactly what she’s talking about: ignoring what’s around you and focusing on the “rhythm”
