Pike on the fly is the best! Here in europe it's highly popular in the fly fishing community. Very interesting these rather small to mid sized pike in Ohio are so old. I fished in some waters in germany where 40 inch plus pike are only 7-8 years old.
Brian! I am a new angler and your awesome video series got me started on fly fishing. I wanted to share a short story I recently experienced while fishing just off the local river in my area. It was about 5:30 in the evening and I was alone using a 5/6 weight fly rod. I was getting zero action for about a solid hour so I make my way back to the shore to change my fly. I kneel down and my back is to the river bank. Behind me I hear light splashing and so I turn my head and I kid you not a 50 pound beaver emerged from the water and charged me!!! I was absolutely terrified and it backed me into a bush. I had to kick the beast in the head just so I could maneuver around it. To make matters worse the poor thing somehow got hooked in my fly and so I had to cut the line and watch as it slowly swim back out into the river. I called park management and told them all about it. They had a good laugh... I also returned the very next morning to check and see if the beaver had died but it managed to remove the fly and so I waded out into the water and grabbed my line and leader. I will never forget the way it kept charging me with those big yellow/orange front teeth! Scariest encounter with wildlife for me yet! I missed the video where you show us how to deal with crazed beavers. I never even knew they were such lethal ambush predators! Thanks Brian
H.B, lol. was on a fishing trip at Salt Fork Lake in Ohio. One of my buddies got out the boat to get some firewood. Then got charged by a Beaver that came out of a washed out bank. He grabbed a stick and poked it to get it away. Otherwise it would had done some serious damage to his leg. Have seen beavers while fishing my entire life. Did not realize they where aggressive until then. At least we were able to laugh about it later at the campfire.
Just got all my flys in, cant wait to go try them out. 10/10 would recommend everyone else shop from you guys because the service was great and i even got all my stuff early
Lol. Awesome vid. Got my first fly bass on a craw fly I made today Thanks to your great vids. If I ever go to Ohio we are going fishing. #themostunlikelyflyfisherman.
Top water fly fishing for ‘gators is one of my favorites as well Brian. Thirty plus inch is a darn fine specimen in just about any water. I still have a blue/white/silver articulated streamer that’s probably 40 years old and has been repaired countless times. It still works the best for me. Thanks for the entertaining video.
I pike fish with flies up here in western New York in local lakes and streams. Also tiger musky on the fly! Hot butter lightning! I first found them in my local trout stream in lower sections using my 4 wt rod! Almost shit when I saw him take my barley legal fly when searching for trout and bring him in on 4x tippet!
They are on my bucket list for sure. I grew up catching them on spinning tackle in western NY but need to try for them with the fly rod. I imagine they'd attack most of the flies I use for back-country snook here in Florida, all fish seem to like red and white:)
Another great video Brian. Today, here in California the Governor has closed all national parks and forest land in the Eastern Sierra Mountains because of the numerous forest fires! It’s just about impossible to get near a stream or river to fish. Your videos have made a very bad situation much more tolerable. Hope everything is going well at the new store. 👍🏻🎣🐟😎🇺🇸
Not so much the fight with these guys but the take is what makes it. Send your questions over to Brian at the shop and he'll be happy to answer there. Thanks.
Send him an e-mail over to the shop and he'll get back to you there. Another video coming too where he talks about the equipment and flies in such so stay tuned.
Thanks for watching but you’d have to check with Brian directly on that. We don’t have that info here. You can email him or call him at the shop and he’ll be happy to share.
What kind of gear were you running for this video? I've been bass & pike fishing on the fly at lakes in MN and people look at you kinda funny when you start putting your fly rod together but I noticed that I tend to get a lot more action than my buddies running traditional plastics and rapalas. I think the common streamer patterns aren't as heavily pressured so the fish respond better to them. Anyway, what gear were you running in the video?
This is a generic question . After 20 plus years picked up the fly rod again . Never have tried trout . Now what sun glasses do you suggest . I am retired and don't have a lot of money so please keep that in mind . Right now am tying to fill box .
I am a fan of the channel for years, and this is the first time I see Brain without a cap. 5:12 The first time. Loose hair. 😳I could not believe my eyes.
That look on Josh's face is priceless! "You're ramblin' on, man. Let's go fishing."
Yes, Brian tends to ramble.
Thanks mad river outfitters. Great information and conservation. Enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching.
Been catching pike on the fly for years in northern Sask. Canada, can’t think of a single other fish more fun to catch on the fly!!
Wow awesome to see another northern sask fly angler, and yes agreed hookin into a big 40” in the Canadian Shield is awesome 👏
Spencer Evertman yeah it was the decision I’ve ever made when I decided to try pike, what an amazing experience! Talk about explosive lol!!
Keith Friesen agreed !!
Hot Buttered Lightning!!!!

They grow slow here. Regardless, we love our Pike on the Fly.
This is a dream of mine! What type and length of leader was used in this episode? Wire? Floro?
Y’all’s videos are so educational couldn’t fly fish without you guys
Thanks so much for being here.
Mad River Outfitters thank you for posting good content
I’ll hopefully be doing a pike trip this next month with my dad. Looking forward to it!
Let us know if we can help.
We need more videos like this!!! Thanks for sharing this adventure Brian!
Stay tuned. Appreciate you watching.
Thanks for watching! What do you think about catching pike on the fly?!
Never done it, but it looks like a blast!
That very same Larry Dahlberg video is what got me into fly fishing some years ago! Well that and all the butter that goes with it.
I wish I could land smallies on the fly let alone pike. I’m around the area your fishing so I have the opportunity .I’m just that bad😐
Looks great, but I’d like to see how to handle them without getting injured.
So I’m tying up flies for this right now...
Pike on the fly is like Hot Buttered Lightning needs to be on a shirt!
Stay tuned.
That was a wonderful fly fishing video.
Thanks for watching.
Awesome Video Brian and Josh- I can't wait to get out with Josh again here soon as Sept and Oct = Big Pike in Ohio!
Best season is just ahead. Give us a shout and let's get you on the schedule. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing but you may want to send this over to Brian via e-mail. He doesn't read or respond to the comments here. He might enjoy that story.

Being a neighbor from pa there's pike everywhere here our best waters are literally ditches that are over looked. And they hold some giant fish
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful Pike. Congrats and tight lines.

Thanks for watching. We don't "size discriminate" so they are all fun to us.
I got yelled at by my teacher today for watching this video on an online class.
Was it worth it?
Mad River Outfitters sure was keep making the vids I love watching them
@@Madriveroutfitters but I was wondering if you guys could do a video on beginning to salt water fly fishing
Aidan Woodhead send that request over to the shop and see what happens. You might be rewarded.
Looks like fun
Yes.....much fun.
Never know just what you might find... until you go looking!
You just gotta poke around.
Hahaha... "Hot buttered lightning". God bless you guys.
Thanks for being here.
Great intro 👏
Thanks for watching!
Pike on the fly is what I live for 🤘 great video 😁
Thanks so much for being here.

You might quit trout fishing. Be careful.
Awesome vid! Would love to go after some Pike
Let us know if we can help.
Been missing this!!
Stay tuned! Much more to come!!!
Mad River Outfitters Can’t wait!! I’ll be here.

Love the vids brain
What's a vids brain?
You’re hilarious!
We like to have fun. Thanks.
I believe your on my home waters. Biggest I've pulled was 42, I've seen bigger.
We do grow some big ones in Ohio.
Andrew Donohue 42” !! great fish 👏
They are on my bucket list for sure. I grew up catching them on spinning tackle in western NY but need to try for them with the fly rod. I imagine they'd attack most of the flies I use for back-country snook here in Florida, all fish seem to like red and white:)
The flies we are using are 6-9" in length usually so typically bigger than a snook fly. Red and White is right though.
@@Madriveroutfitters Makes sense, bigger food for them typically(than for snook). Great video!

Chasing them in two weeks here in Colorado...got some bunkers out here.
Good luck.
I love the guy at 5:30 "what's goin on here" 😂
A bit creepy.
looks like a great fighting fish . whats your top 5 best fighting fish that you have fished for???
Not so much the fight with these guys but the take is what makes it. Send your questions over to Brian at the shop and he'll be happy to answer there. Thanks.
Just the video I needed, I was wondering if you could catch Pike on a fly.
It's a big part of our business. We love 'em.
And muskies!
I’m going to Yellowstone n p this November any flies you recommend??
Contact the shop directly and they will be happy to help.
They need to make a wig and hat Brian Flechsig Halloween costume.
It's coming. Stay tuned. Butter included.
@@Madriveroutfitters should come with margarine instead. Because it is like butter.
Love the videos! Can’t wait to try this. Love the MRO shop! Question: what was that cool music first half of the video? Thanks!
Thanks for watching. All music is stock licensed so no artist/no name. Can't use commercial copywrighted music in public videos.
Any fly tying videos on the Montauk Monster?
Not sure about that. Have to look around on the channel here?
lets go fish!!
Give us a shout. We're booking trips!!!
What set up were you using. Can't wait to go fishing in Ohio where I was born.
Send him an e-mail over to the shop and he'll get back to you there. Another video coming too where he talks about the equipment and flies in such so stay tuned.
Does Brian just keep a stick of butter in his pocket at all times?! 🤣
Correct.
What model Simms jacket are you wearing in this?
Thanks for watching but you’d have to check with Brian directly on that. We don’t have that info here. You can email him or call him at the shop and he’ll be happy to share.
What weight equipment do you recommend for pike/muskie?
Usually 8wt or 9wt. New video coming with this "technical" info so please stay tuned.
@@Madriveroutfitters Sounds good. Thanks
Just caught my fist pike on the fly on Monday! Super ugly woolly bugger, white/chartreuse/purple with untrimmed hackle.
I was on a 5 weight and normal/not wire leader... kinda surprised I managed to land it.
Kudos. That's a feat!!!
The first fish I ever caught on a fly rod, was a 43" pike.
Nice work!!!
@@Madriveroutfitters and it was on a terrible, I mean aweful fly I tied myself hahaha

Nice fish! When did you film? I see you have on a parka or something
This was filmed Sept 7th? Not a parka but a rain jacket. There were storms moving through all day.
9:20 May we know what is the running reel? Just like lighting butter hot. Thumbs up

Probably so!
Also prob like deciding how to creatively

Northeast Ohio.
i didn't know that can catch a pike fly fishing!
