The purpose of the power of speaking in tongues or another language was to spread God's word in a language other than yours, starting in 'Israel, then Judea and then all parts of the world'. Also, everytime one spoke in tongues, there was a translator to make sure the locals still understood what was being said in another language. It has to be spoken in a language understandable by a group that was being reached, not just gabble or mumbled and jumbled up words in excitement. It's like, for example, a native luo speaker getting the power to speak in kikuyu for the benefit of kikuyus. Today, the word and Bible have now been translated and preached in all tongues/languages. So there is no more need for the ability to speak in another tongue/language. 1Corinthians 13:8 says in part: .... "But if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease...." So now, there is no need for a luo, in our example, to speak in kikuyu because there are enough kikuyus and kikuyu Bibles to enable the preaching and teaching of God's word.
