  • VERY OLD FILM OF THE TITANIC & OLYMPIC VERY RARE FILM,
    RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. The second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, she was built between 1909--11 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She carried 2,223 people.
    Her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as over a thousand emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere seeking a new life in North America. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and opulent cabins. She also had a powerful wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Though she had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, she lacked enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard. Because of outdated maritime safety regulations, she carried only enough lifeboats for 1,178 people -- slightly more than half of the number travelling on the maiden voyage and one-third her total passenger and crew capacity.
    After leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912, Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland before heading westwards towards New York. On 14 April 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles (600 km) south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship's time; GMT−3). The glancing collision caused Titanic's hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partially filled. A disproportionate number of men -- over 90% of those in Second Class -- were left aboard because of a "women and children first" protocol followed by the officers loading the lifeboats. Just before 2:20 am Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Many of those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. Some, however, were rescued by lifeboats able to hold more passengers, and others able to board Collapsible A, partially submerged, or Collapsible B, floating upturned. The 710 survivors were taken aboard from the lifeboats by RMS Carpathia.

    This is actually the Titanic's sister ship Olympic during its maiden voyage. Captain Smith was also the Captain of the Olympic. You can tell it's the Olympic because the forward promenade deck is open, Titanic had an enclosed Promenade deck. It's one of the only outward visible differences between the two.

  • @andrewbethune5
    @andrewbethune5 4 роки тому +18

    Just to make everything clear: Titanic herself was not in this video.
    The ship in this video is in fact the RMS Olympic. For those who don't know, Olympic was the older sister ship to Titanic. Most of the footage is the Olympic docked in New York and departing NY in June 1911 during her maiden voyage. The last bit of footage is footage of the RMS Carpathia in NY dropping off Titanic's survivors. What I would assume is that they made a short film about the Titanic's sinking using footage of Olympic, but crossing out any markings of the name "Olympic" or "New York" (as Titanic obviously never reached New York).
    Now for those who believe that it is the Titanic in this video and not the Olympic, here is how you can tell it's Olympic. If you look at the A Deck promenade, for example at 4:07, you'll notice that it is all open. On Titanic, it was made enclosed at the last minute (although the aft-er part of the promenade was open). You may also notice that the dock is not Southampton at all, it is New York (Pier 59). One way to know is the direction the ship was in at the pier. If this was in Southampton, the dock would've been on the ship's port (left) side. In this footage, the dock is on the ship's starboard (right) side, as that was the way she entered the dock when she arrived on her westbound maiden voyage.
    Just to try and set everything straight for those who believe it's Titanic in this video, when it is the Olympic.

      Helen, this is mostly-footage of the Olympic Ship- she was built first. The poster, said it was footage of both ships. The Olympic was actually the ship that brought the most excitement, as you can see, by the film! When the Titanic came to be finished, months and months later, it was cooly received, actually as the second almost identical ship in a series of 3 Ships. So what you are seeing is passengers on The Olympic, and, The Captain you see, did get transferred to The Titanic, once her first voyage was ready. You are wonderfully, right and correct on the amazing, one-of-a-kind Historical footage, here though, and how special it really is, and I too, cannot believe any unwise person would give it a bad thumb at all. Ignorance I am guessing!

      I really appreciate the uploading of this footage. However, the title is partially click-bait, because it seems that no single second of the video shows the Titanic. It's all Olympic (and Carpathia) footage. Captain Smith is shown walking around, but this is from the Olympic in 1911, the year before Titanic's maiden voyage. Maybe this wrong title is the reason why some people give thumbs down.

    • @goldfing5898

      @@sandhyarao4265 No, it is by no means Titanic, but all Olympic. Of course it looks very similar, e.g. the electrical cranes were the same on both ships. But you can tell from the footage that the promenade deck is Olympic, being open at full length, whilst the corresponding deck on Titanic was partially closed.

      Can't, after the bow plates and the stern identifications and the super-structure was trashed at Jarrow, the Titanic was scrapped in Inverkeithing Scotland. The Britannic, is at 400ft, and in much better condition, *and you would hardly know the difference*!!!

    • @Aidankiwi
      @Aidankiwi 9 років тому +8

      Rubin Schmidt The Olympic was scrapped at Inverkeithing in 1937. During 1935 & 6 the interior fittings were removed at Jarrow and some were sold for re-use. There is a hotel in Northern England, The White Swan in Alnwick, Northumberland that has much of the wood panelling and windows from Olympic's first class smoking room. Some pieces still bear the Harland & Wolff shipyard number 400 which was Olympic's yard identifier.
      Just to completely debunk the the switched ships nonsense, the artifact recovered from the wrecksite, a large section of hull plating known as 'the big piece' carries the H&W identifier 401(Titanic) conclusively proving there was no switch.

    • @Rubin_Schmidt
      @Rubin_Schmidt 9 років тому

      Never seen the"Big Piece", maybe that was the seam added to the"Titanic" in the month before she sailed. (Board of Trade. Consultative Document L.L. 21288, refers). I start with the fact that an iceberg could not "unzip" the rivets nor rupture the hull. My opinion, of course, given the fact that the Olympic ran her side along a concrete pier, attached to America.!!!

    • @Aidankiwi
      @Aidankiwi 9 років тому +4

      " I start with the fact that an iceberg could not "unzip" the rivets nor rupture the hull."
      Opinion not fact as you go on to correct yourself. Of course your opinion does not take into consideration the different tensile quality of the 1912 grade of steel used, when at different temperatures. Metallurgical tests have shown using samples from 'the big piece' that at the low sea temperature on the night of the sinking the steel became very brittle indeed and would easily succumb to an impact with ice.
      FYI 'the big piece' is a section of main hull plating.

    • @Rubin_Schmidt
      @Rubin_Schmidt 9 років тому +1

      The current "Experts" say the weakness in the ship was a midships. They also say that the ship was altered a midships,(Board of Trade Consultative Document L.L.21288 14th Feb. 1912,refers). My opinion is, you wouldn't need an iceberg to put a ship apart, if when at full speed ahead, you suddenly throw it into full speed astern. You should take up these points up, with the authors of the "Titanic at 100", they claim to be the "authority", at the moment. !!!

    This is the Olympic, as everyone else has said. The footage was shot in the summer of 1911, Capt. Smith is wearing summer white uniform. It was the occasion of the Olympic's maiden voyage to New York. That's New Jersey at the back of the stern across the river. Like others have said, the tugboats port of registry have been scratched out because they said 'New York'.

    I had never seen that old newsreel before. In keeping with the standards of "best available at deadline", the producers used stock footage of the class leader, "Olympic", as evidenced by the unenclosed upper promenade. Also, in an error common in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Captain Arthur H Rostron had his name misspelled. You will note that he graciously paused for a pleasant smile and beatific hand gesture, but that he modestly retired. Rostron was a strong but humble man, who literally prayed his way through the dangerous race to the wreck. His serene strength is evident. Note the absence of shots of any "Titanic" officers or widows: sensationalism had its limits, and decorum overruled many press behaviors commonly seen today.

      Of the Olympic not the Titanic!
      They look so similar that they would always just say it was the titanic.
      Most of all the pictures that you see of the titanic, like the rooms and dining halls and everything, are mostly all the Olympic. They don’t even have a picture of the grand staircase that’s actually from the Olympic as well.
      But there are a few rare pictures inside the titanic only because somebody got off in Ireland at the last stop before going over the Atlantic to N.Y and he took pictures of aboard.
      Francis Browne is his name, look him up crazy story!

      It's not Titanic. There is no film footage of Titanic in service. This is film footage of Olympic taken on her first visit to New York in June 1911. As Titanic was the second ship in its class it attracted much less publicity prior to the disaster. In the aftermath of the disaster cinema newsreels patched together this footage as there was no real footage to show the public. That is why the film obscures the names and port of registry of the attending tugs. It would be a real give away if the public could see the ship being manoeuvred by tugs registered in New York, a port Titanic never reached.
      Other clues are the open A deck promenade (Titanic's was enclosed for roughly the forward half) and the fact Capt Smith is wearing the summer white uniform.

      The only Titanic footage is of the ship's exterior hull PRIOR to final fitting out. The funnels were in place but the A-deck was not enclosed yet. You can even see the ship's name inscribed (dark letters; gold in real life) on the hull.
      95% of the footage called "Titanic" is Olympic because was photographed and filmed far more than the Titanic. Besides surviving a normal career of 23-25 years, Olympic was actually considered more prestigious because it was THE FIRST ship of its class of liner.

      +Porfle Popnecker The existing footage of Titanic was filmed before her A deck was enclosed, so it's difficult but not impossible to tell the difference. The only way to tell is the bridge. Titanic's was slightly wider than Olympic's to aid navigation. It's noticeable in the side by side photo of the two.

  • @Infiniti359

    The first 20 seconds are footage from the Olympic. As we all know if it was genuine Titanic footage, there would be no need to scratch the names of places out of the footage. Problem being that was taken when Olympic was in the US.

    I don't understand why people try to pass this off as the Titanic? This is her sister the R.M.S. Olympic in New York the tugs for one give it away as they are american steam tugs in New York harbor, the building is also a new york building Not the white star building that was in Southampton. How ever it would had still been the feel of Titanic if she had arrived in New York. But it is in fact her older sister not the Titanic herself.

    This is indeed RMS Olympic . It's a great piece of history though . The clues are all there that it's Olympic , the biggest giveaway - the white fuzzy / blurry bits on screen , they block out important things , such as Tug boat names & the names of their respective ports - Titanic never got to these sadly . Obviously , lots of other clues too , Captain Smith in White " summer uniform " , decks etc , a lovely video of the " Majesty" of the most beautiful Ships ever IMHO. Nothing of today can compare to these . RMS Queen Mary , Normandie , Lusitania , etc lovely ships . Makes me sad , as my best friend was Millvina Dean , she signed 10 exclusive 8X10 photos of RMS Titanic for me before she died . I spoke to her the day before she died in her sleep , just like Rose in Titanic Film , Miss Dean was adorable . Miss Dean was the youngest and last survivor . I know that only 2:39 of Titanic ( roughly exists of Titanic on film , it's on UA-cam . My friend Aaron1912 has it if that helps , but I am sure you will find it or have seen it . Peace out & Steady as she goes ! 🚢❤️🌹

When I was stationed in Northern Ireland during the troubles I listened to a conversation between two locals in Belfast and they were talking about how the ships were switched. I wasn't particularly interested at the time but recalled it later when I started researching the subject.

    Everyone commenting "that's not Titanic that's Olympic" clearly forget that they are almost identical twins with titanic being built with her older sisters blueprints plus a few additional safety features. Also the reason why Olympic is featured as titanic in promotional footage and post cards is because she was already established by the time titanic set sail and due to the aforementioned design of titanic being almost identical to Olympic it would have been counterintuitive to show off a ship that everyone back then had already seen.

  • @misterrasmussen
    @misterrasmussen 7 років тому

    A lot of people point out in this video and other videos, that the ship is Olympic and not Titanic. I think it is true. However, i do not think it is weird that they would film the Olympic and not Titanic. Photography and live filming was expensive back then. Olympic was the first of that class of liners. At the time of her launch, Olympic was the biggest in the world. Titanic was second to be launched, and they did not know that Titanic would be by far the most famous.
    Are there actually any real photographs that show Titanic at the dock in Southampton. There are photographs that show her in Belfast. I have also seen one that is titled Last picture taken of Titanic. I think the only pictures taken on board Titanic are those taken by Reverend Brown.

    This video has some wonderful footage, sadly none of it is Titanic, but even so, fascinating stuff. As for the switch theory, it's complete rubbish. There was no $12,000,000 payout, the ships were only insured for $5,000,000. The wreck has been closely examined and is certainly Titanic, all pieces have 401 on them, whilst paneling from the scrapped Olympic, which can be seen in a hotel in Northumberland, all have 400 on them. Solid proof.

    This is actually the R.M.S Olympic. Still rare footage! But as you can see the promenade deck. It's all open, but Titanic's was not. It was a re-design because of some issues on Olympic's sea trials. So before they put the final touches on Titanic they changed the promenade deck. It turned out to be a better design. More rooms on the ship. But now there under the ocean sadly

Titanic just didnt hang around long enough to get a huge amount of footage of her Britannic suffered the same built sent to sea and sunk so not a lot of photos of her either.

    The Titanic has got to be one of the most documented stories of all time. It is tragic and sad but a brilliant piece of history, the upper class and the lower classes, how they lived. Money at he end of the day was outweighed by chivalry, women and children first. Those men were heroes x

    During the middle of the film when the ship is being escorted by tugs, said ship was not Titanic as she left for her maiden voyage. If it was Titanic, it was during her fitting as the first class prom deck was open and not closed in. Otherwise it was the Olympic which Captain Eward Smith RD RNR did also command.
    Excellent film though.

      We re talking about a major disaster back then when the Ocean Liners were the most reliable intercontinental travel system aviable, atmospheric conditions and the standart laws from the time played against the ship, that's all. So keep the imaginary friend out of the discussion (if the people here pretend to have a real one) when we're talking about the death of people in an accident, is like saying "God kill 1.500 inocents because the people who build the ship was arrogant" and pretending that it is ok since God did it.

      ***** That would be impossible, Titanic did not have a name plate ,her name was engraved in the hull; plus the huge number of differences between the two ships. The Olympic A-deck promenade was fully open, the Titanic forward A-deck promenade was enclosed. The Olympic b-deck had a promenade deck that ran bow to stern like A-deck. On Titanic, the B promenade was replaced with suites and the Cafe Parisien, this made the B-decks window configuration very different from the Olympic. The pillar supports on the Titanics reception room had a different layout than Olympic and the window configuration differed as well. The bridge on on Titanic was straight, while the Olympic had a gentle curve. The Olympic had open berths for third class, while the Titanic had private cabins. The Olympics yard number was stamped with 400 on many different parts her, while Titanics were 401.

      alinkyng you are the gullible one. Explain why, when Ballard went back to the ship he noticed the letters on the bow had been bolted on when it is widely known the letters were etched into the steel plates. If you are such an expert you would know that. Also, two of the letters fell off due to corrosion and directly etched into the steel were the letters M and P. As far as wand waving is concerned, stop calling people 'tards' or we'll wave a wand over you and watch your tard ass fall. The ships were identical which means exactly the same. You don't know what you're talking about. The Olympic was severely damaged at the keel, toward the stern. The same location where the ship snapped in two during sinking. There was no hull number located on the wreck, they used the propeller #401 which was Titanic's but it had been put on the Olympic to repair it after the HMS Hawke accident. You're not the expert you would have us believe.

    3:37 This footage is not of Titanic, but her near-identical twin sister ship Olympic departing New York City Harbour in 1912.
    See those squiggly lines on the sterns of the tugboats? The name plates on the tugs were painted over on the film strips (1912 version of censoring) because they had "New York" printed underneath. At the time, interest of the Titanic was very high and there was demand for film footage of her, but there was very little of it. So many newsreel companies opted to use footage of Olympic instead and disguised it as being of the Titanic.
