Lol, Iiked your video mic without compression much better than the dynamic without compression. Dynamic with compression definitly gave some nice results :)
I always thought the 3630 sounded fine for the $99 I paid. It is not a valve optical type compressor and you wont get that sound. But as a general level controller and for gating, it is a very effective unit and mine never colored the sound too much as long as it wasnt overdone. I bought mine in 1999 and I heard the quality went down. This 3632 sure looks pretty. I wonder which sounded better.
Expander does the opposite of a compressor. It INCREASES the dynamic range, thus making low volume stuff lower, and high volume stuff higher. Noise = very low volume, so when you increase the expander it's gone. Thus called a "noise gate".
Fantastic review, my Phonic has come to the end of its life and this sounds great, I only use it for live vocal as I play guitar as well so mic control is harder... I will buy one tomorrow, thanks again for the review.
@METALHEAD4556 Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest and the loudest point of audibility. Compressing just brings those 2 together, and in the process it makes the sound _perceptibly_ louder (because compressing make softer sounds get boosted). Overcompressing may result in perceived volume boost, however the mix will sound like you've robbed your mix from life and soul. So compress knowingly of the downsides, otherwise you will kill your mix. With fire.
FYI, the only Microphone for serious voiceovers is the EV RE 20. No other mic even comes close....I've tried many. It does not add color or boom or sibilance or any other side effect. Try it and you will never go back. I've used it in an audio chain with the 3630 in it. Most major market radio stations use it for good reason.
I know how a side chain circuit works, and how to normally rout it, but somehow I'm not getting it right on this machine. I want my baseline to be ducked by my kick. How do I properly rout it? Can somebody help me out? I'm using a traditional mixer with input and line on every channel.
@borntobeme1933 When you hear a loud sound and go AARHADGK&^%*#E&$RQ, that's when you want to turn down the volume. Mutually, when you hear a very soft sound you want to PUMP THAT FUCKER UP SO YOU CAN DANCE TILL YOU DROPPP!!!! A compressor does that automatically for you. The threshold lets you decide when you want the compressor to start working, ratio lets you decide how much, while attack and release signify when it does its thing. Btw, difference between volume lvls is called dynamic range.
What does the expander do? Does it create a stereo image? And why does the gainreduction increase when the sound is released with expander? Thanks on forehand

it would depend on the desired application. I use it as an insert between audio card and mixing board, and I've used it as well as a compression bus. both with good results.
been into doijng my own radio shows for years but never knew how all this gear worked so thanks for this. Question: if doing my own radio shows I want it to sound like fm radio on my stream with all audio and mic levels the same. If I had an external mixer for my mic into a laptop and then play music on laptop then audio out from that laptop into this bit of gear then out of here into another laptop that is streaming would this work thanks
The Mics sounds like trash!... also what is the point of pushing that compression so much distorting the sound! Whats the point of the gate (which is use to eliminate fills from another instruments in live etc etc) when you are using a single drum track! BTW I spent over 30 years in the recording industry and television.
Ew. Your camera mic sounds SO much better than that Rode. The Rode sounds like your talking into a toilet roll. As for the 3632, probably one of the worst compressors ever made.
First time I hear a camera mic that sounds better than a real mic!
Lol
This also was my first thought....
That real mic sounded pretty awful !
Interesting demo. But at the moment he switches to his 'dynamic Rode', he sounds like he is speaking into a metal bucket!
Would like to see that eq settings for rode because it sounds dead :
Awesome. Just bought one "as new" for the same as the original price, bar one penny. Nice review Nick, hands on and factual, thank you.
Useful review and demo, thanks Nick.
Oh man, I gotta get one of these! Thanks for making this video!

Daft Punk was quite fond of the 3630, using it quite heavily on Homework and Discovery. Maybe I should get one solely for that reason.
@rhyskallen That is a limiter that you are describing. A compressor basically makes the loud parts quieter and the quiet parts louder.
Wow this would really be great for sports commentary

buddy ran his cables through water before running it through that duster mic
How did you set up the sidechain? really thankful for answer!
Works great for gating and compressing metalcore/ deathcore breakdowns etc. I will post a review soon if you like :)
I would love a review

Sonicstate have come a long way
Thanks a lot man, really helpful!!!!

@borntobeme1933 when you hear a crisp track that pumps dynamically, thats compression
Great video! Thanks!
sounds like the mic signal is doubled somehow, like a fake stereo effect that's been rendered mono. very very weird.

This unit has indentical power button and indicator led's like Alto ACL 2 compressor...
That Rode sounds crap compared to the camera mike!

is this good for rap vocals i know people luv vst but im looking for an external compressor
I dont get how the compresser unit works at all. What does a compressor do at all? Im sorry if im asking stupidly.
No free lunch kiddies (Except for the RNC) cheap out with anyother compressers you'll regret it.
does it works well if i use it as guitar compressor with a Rack processor?
I use it for guitar. Works great for me :)

Review the maschine mikro please :)
How did you hook up the mic to the compressor?
So what do people use this thing for? Bus compression? Final mixdown compression? NY compression or individual tracks?
it would depend on the desired application. I use it as an insert between audio card and mixing board, and I've used it as well as a compression bus. both with good results.
2020👍
how to plug into your dj mixer?????

+Ross Patzelt Honestly, you can do this all on your laptop without hardware.
how please
Daft Punk used this on Homework and Discovery.
Ha Flashback eh Nick!
EQ your mic -1 or -2 Db at around 800hz, 1.0 kHz & 1.2kHz to scoop out those nasty nasal frequencies.
These compressors sound great on fart sounds.

I agree. Was a long time ago
Compressor audio signal is very better :
These effects make the mic sound bad. Too much compression
mic sounds so bad
Get a 2nd hand Focusrite Compounder, much better
Have one of these but never opened the box. What mic boom arm are you using. Thanks.
so cheap? :o wow
Muß das immer Englisch sein????
What a terrible mic to test this equipment on.
WHY DOES THIS VIDEO SOUND SO BAD, WHY IS IT CLIPPING
no podrías en castellano,gracias
why, all it is is a midi controller
How do you go about controlling MIDI from a compressor?
Seems like kack to me. Awful effect on the voice.
