HEAVY RAIN IN THE MOUNTAINS & trails in Padis: CETATILE PONORULUI CIRCUIT - Episode 2 - Apuseni Natural Park, Romania
This is the 2nd episode in a series of 4, about Apuseni Natural Park, Romania.
Once I finished preparations in the camping area (previous episode: • CU CORTUL IN PADIS. Or... ) I went on the first trail, Cetatile Ponorului Circuit
It is a relatively easy trail. In it’s simplest form, it starts from Glavoi (La Grajduri), a camping area in Apuseni Natural Park. Cetatile Ponorului Circuit lasts approximately 5 hours. The trail takes you through 3 sinkholes. The access to the third one is made through the portal/cave entrance in Sinkhole 1. The path goes up to reach `the balconies`, a few viewpoints located at the top of the sinkholes’ walls. The trail returns to the stone road leading back to Glavoi.
Cetatile Ponorului is the place where the flows of water coming from Glavoi meet the underground waters coming from Ponor Meadow. They go back underground and come out again in Galbenei Gorges.
A sudden storm started immediately after completing the circuit, and its raised waters flooded the valley of the riverbed of the creek that runs through Glavoi. After it has stopped, I decided to visit Ponor Meadow. When there’s heavy rain, like on that day, a lake forms in the meadow, and it started filling the valley. I also visited Ponor Karst Spring, where the river comes out from the underground, with force.
Back at my camping area I checked if the rain had flooded my tent during the rain. At the end of the day I enjoyed picking up blueberries from the bushes just behind the tent.
In the next episodes we will visit: Galbenei Gorges, Focul Viu Glacier Cave, Cetatile Radesei Cave, Somesul Cald Gorges, Pietrele Boghii and we will eat traditional pies in the Padis Cabin area.
