- Becoming a professional athlete can hardly be an accident, but it was for the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin. A Giro title, an on-screen toilet break and a rainbow jersey mark his unique career, however, this year the Dutchman has officially retired from the sport. Today, we take a look back on Dumoulin’s 10 years at the top to mark the rise and fall of Tom Dumoulin.

Tom won a Giro and finished second, finished second in the Tour, and was world champion in the ITT. That is a great career.

yeah, I played pro cycling manager 2018 a long time (cause I didnt want to buy the same game every year), and Dumolin really robbed me some wins.

I love cycling. All I wanted as a kid was to be a pro. I've followed the sport for 35 years and still love cycling. If I or millions of other fans could have Tom's palmares we would bite an arm off for it! The defining characteristic of Tom for me, is his beautiful riding style, all his power coming from his lower back and legs, no movement from his shoulders, to ride to two 2nd places same year at the Giro and Tour with his style to a dominant team Sky, is career defining, Tom was pure class, a master pedlaler. WTF happened to Tom, nothing but amazing things, he lit up the world of cycling , achieved great things with pure class. Well done and thank you Tom. Enjoy your new chapter.

I loved the Tom Dumoulin era. He was always fun to watch and cheer for. I was bummed when he bowed out but I'm sure riding at the level is unbelievably difficult to maintain--both physically and mentally.

In 2018, he came terribly close to several major wins but always came a little short. However, for consistency , this season was amazing .
He made the podium in the Giro (Froome’s nuclear move ) and TDF . It’s not like he had amazing team (though he did win Giro the year before ) The world ITT he got a medal but no win.
His best performance was that extremely extremely hard world Championship race . The one that Valverde won. ALL the top 5 struggled up the final ramp. Half wish that when he did catch up to them , that he kept up his attack even if Valverde had him anyway, but he’d have got at least 3rd .
Amazing season despite not winning the big races . So much for being just a ITT man
He’s won multiple stages in the Giro, TDF, and Vuelta and not necessarily ITT stages
He won’t be forgotten by race fans

I do feel like a lot is missing in what happened to Tom. Since his win in the Giro he increasingly felt the pressure of the public. He also gives the moment at 9:28 as a vibrant example. Tom saw himself as a bikerider and didn't want the pressure of the people and fans expecting great things. He was just someone who enjoyed riding his bike and the media attention prohibited him from doing that since he felt like he was not cycling for himself anymore but had to perform for others.

It’s life in any profession, any business or career, and it’s not unique to Sports. When the Rewards are outweighed by reduced “quality of life” due to what’s required to be optimally successful, satisfied or even happy. Especially true is when something else equal or greater becomes available or, has been there all along just waiting. It’s the media circus creating hyperbole for drama. When the reality is nothing close. The only person who knows the “truth” is Tom Dumoulin. Just my .2. Peace

i think after his crash and the problem with his knee, he couldn't get used to riding with pain and struggled to have the same motivation when training with the pain
Yes - that knee took a long time to heal and there were setbacks and infections along the way. Good to see him get that silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
At his size and natural weight, he basically needs to be anorexic to keep up with the climbers in the grand tours. That’s hard to keep up mentally. Plus, he was having his GI issues. The other issue is that tour organizers are shying away from TT’s because they are boring for fans to watch and hurt tv ratings. In any case, Dumoulin had a good career and some great accomplishments.

Amazing recap of his awesome career, however, you forgot to mention his amazing and unexpected silver medal at the 2021 olympics TT

The way they chose to treat his knee injury and on top of that they way they (mis)treated his parasite 'issue' was his downfall. I've offered him better ways but who's going to listen to a simple red light therapy salesman and natural therapist right? indeed... so that's the actual story

all athletes will come to a point they need to retire from the sport and a new younger generations will take over, Tom had a good impressive career.

I saw Tommy cycling up the mountain while I was hauling straw on my back for the garlic harvest. In the middle of nowhere I called out, Dumoulin, go! Thailand november 2021. Tom didn’t go this season. The jab got to him.
Dumoulin was a winner on his terms. No fault for him "retiring early"......he'd had his career, was more or less satisfied with it, was realistic about it, and realized it was time for him to move on.
TD is a much more 'complex' personality than most bike-riders with many interests. When you hear him speak... he corrects his own obscure grammar mistakes when he speaks Dutch (who does that?); he was smart enough to go to Med School. He'll be around 'bicycles' somehow. I hope he'll gaive Lau ten Dam a call; he seems to have found his 'place' and I think Tom can find it as well.

I hate this title....
In that picture at then beginning, you can see he’s virtually the same height as Wiggins. I think it’s more difficult for these guys to maintain gc form because a lot of their efforts year round are about body weight. Like, Wiggins really peaked once in his career for the tour win.

@@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 Jan Janssen: Vuelta 1967, Tour 1968. Joop Zoetemelk : Vuelta 1979, Tour 1980. Dumoulin was the third dutchman to win a grand tour.
@@gladtobeangry Thanks. I'm hardly conversant with Vueltas, especially the older ones. That '68 Tour slipped my mind though. The blonde and sunglasses wearing Jansen got that victory right before the Merckx reign began. If I remember correctly, he was on the BIC team.
