    Hiiii! I do local chicken in Uganda. My current stock came in 21st November and I have started seeing eggs, that's basically 4.6months, and not 6 months Dr. Daniel. Just for clarity, yes they ordinarily go the 6-7months when road-running, but they mature a little faster when fed and confined. I actually put up my laying boxes now and getting ready for the real eggs, and I will be breeding as well, and for the record, 4.6months... almost the same time with the dual purpose birds, and quite not far off from the commercial layers. And for the record, the production in terms of eggs sure isn't high up there, but with the right calculations, it makes as much sense to rare locals. My two cents Doctor, and whoever else might read this.

    Hi, Doctor. I enjoy your perspective but do not share in it. Local African chickens (LAC) are very resilient and not as disease-prone as their 'agricultural' cousins. Beside, local chickens are breeders, egg producers and meat providers unlike their imported brethren who are either 'layers' or, 'broilers'. Because they are triple-purpose, u save on buying day old chicks (doc) as u can produce your docs; can give u tasty eggs and flavor-full meat. Their feed is much cheaper as u do not have to buy feed companies prohibitively compounded feed: you can make the feed from agricultural wastes, grasses, etc.
    So, let us not look down on our inherited poultry. Rather, let us study, research and improve their genetic qualities for our African food security

    Sorry to say, but your assumptions on local chickens is not true, been following big international UA-camr chicken farms and many of them have switched to free-range because of its growing popularity, here in the Netherlands the biggest supermarkets chains Alberthijn and Lidle, and Aldi here in Europe decided last year to only buy free-range chickens and eggs, the free-range business is booming, the consumers are becoming more conscious of what they're eating and are declining to buy chickens and eggs being raised in a closed environment, soon, broilers and chicken companies that practice deep litter system like yours will have to switch to free-range if they want to survive the changes that are currently happening in the chicken business, and in poultry and agriculture in general.

    The issue is about the "GET RICH QUICK SYNDROME" and confusing NATURE'S WAY with ARTIFICIAL WAYS to life and success.
    By the way,for those who complain about local chicken,I realized majority are allergic to studying,analyzing and taking nature.
    Precisely,when you choose local,choose to OBEY AND MOVE ON NATURAL RYTHM OR study and tune it within your own choreography.
    Example; At Zabuland Chicken(Channel coming soon)we only focus on LOCAL BREEDS,and in a full year,one hen produces ATLEAST 20 CHICKS!
    Remember of the 20,your input is as low as 40% to 20% of what you put in hybrid,think about the risks,the price and health benefits of the two breeds and you will come to a balanced conclusion.

    • @maryannngugi3695
      @maryannngugi3695 2 роки тому +1

      Then you're actually supporting his point. 20 chicks in a whole year, how much feed have you used for the mother. If you sell both mother and children are you likely to recover your investment? Are there profits?
      If for personal consumption, then it's ok. But if you're pouring money, you need that money back whether slow or fast. In the end you want a profit, that's how I have understood it.

    • @zamundaafrica4611
      @zamundaafrica4611 2 роки тому

      @@maryannngugi3695 My dear you make HUGE profits when you compare inputs and risks as opposed to Hybrids.Follow my workshops and trainings at: Kwagala Foundation.
      Think About this;
      Apart from a Four Time Vaccination Schedule,a Local Chicken involves less costs and risks compared to the other.
      The other advantage ONE LOCAL CHICKEN reproduces thrice a year NATURALLY (Without any trick or science involved).That's not the case with the overrated breeds.
      Above all,10 Local chicken can eat a kilo or less of feeds per day as compared to Hybrid which consume ten times higher(to speed up the unhealthy growth).
      Please try to follow my trainings on Kwagala Foundation about sustainable development where I do it PRACTICALLY show and talk about possibilities!.
      Thanks.

    So i have a local chickens, i want to take chicks and feed them layers food. First i'ma separate them chicks with their mothers and keep them in a warm place and feed them layers food. So is that a good idea or what your take on that??

      You won't get the same feed conversion. It's about the commercial birds breeding and DNA. However you will get better results by management of your flock. So yes you will get better results but not the same as commercial. Look into fermented feed. That will help you and save money on the feed. I have done this with local birds with good success.

      Feed them with broiler feed for two weeks. Like here in Nigeria we have a feed called Ultima. It makes the birds grow very fast and big. I feed mine for two weeks then separate the babies from their mum. The mum will start laying again and the babies will go their way😃
