Nice review and thankYOU for posting a review of the HT60 with some proper action!
As someone who has been interested in the Sytong for a while, this is excellent proof of how good the image quality is!
Keep up the good work, friend 👍

@@kentoutdoorsinnz7014 Thats fine, I'm no expert either (day or night).
As is, I have used my airguns for pest control and when I use them at night, I currently use a megaorei2 scope addon for one of my airguns and a "wanney NVE-E50-II Plus" for the other.
The Mega... the camera of the NV addon occludes the eye piece and you have to rely on the mounted monitor which... isn't ideal. It works, but... Meh.
The Wanney works well enough, though you need to link it to either a tablet or compatible cellphone to change its settings since it defaults in low quality until you set the parameters (a real p.i.t.a. if you forget said tablet), after which, imagery is fine and shooting day or night with it's pretty good, though I did have to invest in an external laser rangefinder since the so called internal "rangefinder" option is... laughable.
In retrospect, I wish I'd gone the way of sytong, it costs a little more, but is far superior to either of my NV rigs.
Meh, you live and learn, as they say

For years been spotlighting for bunnies etc - and after a few times out, the hares wise up to the spotlight real fast - now this looks perfect for the .22 ! Great review - great footage in use! Love the idea of thermal but still oblivious to brands and functions.. this shows this would suit what I want to do without breaking the bank - thanks again.
For .22 subsonic use, would an extra illuminator be necessary or 'as is' be enough light?

Mate the sytongs built in infrared is really good. Easy see 100mtrs and further. I have an add on infrared but never use it. Adds nothing to what I can see. I use a pard ta32 thermal spotter. First thermal I've used. Combined with the sytong if there's bunnies there you'll see them.

Thanks for the nice simple review. I'm mainly looking for some NV gear for casual bunny shooting up to 100m - usually 20-60m. Since it's a fixed unit, I'll also use it for possums which can be 5-20m away. Currently using a red light torch which is pretty good, but I think the IR lighting would give me loads of time to line the bunnies up. What zoom did you get? Is there an obvious zoom to get for my needs (3-8x vs 6.5-13x from memory). Someone said they wished they had got the 3-8x and someone else recommended 6.5-13, so I'm unsure. Also, I'd be going for the 940nm light unless you think that wouldn't shine out to 100m - I guess I can always use an addon 850nm if needed. Is the LRF necessary, or nice to have? Also appreciate any new feedback you may have a few months on. I'm currently using a borrowed thermal spotter (which I don't want to hand back - haha), so let's assume I'll be using one of those with regard to your answers. Thanks Kent!

      @kentoutdoorsinnz7014  2 роки тому +2

Hi Cam. Thanks for checking out my channel. Re your questions. Ok so for the ranges you are shooting I'd stick to the 3 - 8 power. That's what I'm using and 8x is plenty for 100mtr shots but I'm typically running on 3x as standard and that's great for anything out to 40 - 50 mtrs or more plus it means you have a good field of view to find the bunny you saw in the spotter easily.
NOTE ...Once you go to NV and Thermal having no visible light (spotlight) means you are completely reliant on what you look through with 1 eye to find game. That means you want a big field of view in whatever you use so lower power is good. 3x is fine in this regard on the Sytong. As an example. I use a Pard TA32 35mm thermal spotter. Its base mag is 4.5x. I find that a bit restrictive for finding close bunnies i.e. I have to pan up and down to search a close area as the Field of view is a little small at 4.5x. The sytong at 3x is better. If I changed thermal I'd go for a lower base mag maybe 2x if poss for this exact reason. Higher base mag is fine if your searching out to 50mtrs plus but close stuff its a bit small. So . . . . If you got the 6.5x you'll find trying to find a bunny at 20mtrs that you saw in the thermal needs a lot of scanning around as your field of view is a lot smaller and you have no visible light to guide you an where to look. You have a small image through the scope and that's it. So if I were you I'd get the 3 - 8 for the ranges you shoot . Its a great unit for bunnies out to 100mtrs and particularly if your shooting possums in close. 6.5x would be way too much in my view. I mean its do-able but you'd be scanning around a lot to find stuff in close .
Re the IR rating re 940nm. Dont know sorry. I've got the 850nm and it seems fine. I'm not noticing bunnies see it. What scares them is noise like me clanking the chain on steel gates!!! Night time noise seems to me to be the biggy. Grass scuffing noise seems fine but metallic noise is bad. So cannot give you advice on the 940nm as just never used one.
LRF is brilliant. Once you move from a light e.g. spotlight to NV you loose distance perspective as cant look at things with both eyes. Judging distance becomes difficult. I often walked in too close on rabbits using NV before I had the LRF Sytong as thought they were far further away than they were. OK if your shooting a spot where you know distance reference points but if a bunny turns up in an odd spot or you shoot new blocks its nice to range it. Once I got the LRF I would guess 60 - 70mtrs then range it at 45 - 50!! So I really like having the LRF for piece of mind. I also shoot subs and my guns capable of accurate 100mtr shots (that does not mean I am!!) but sub trajectory is dropping quick out there so you need to know if its 90mtrs or 100mtrs to allow for the right drop. The LRF is beaut here and helps stretch out for longer shots if you need to.
Summary - After a bit of shooting the Sytong is really perfect for the bunny shooting I do. Its accurate, reliable, easy to use and gives a great image. Plus I just carry a spare couple of 18650 batteries as the PARD TA32 spotter I use and the Sytong both use them so easy to carry spares that support both. Things I'd change re the Sytong???. . . . . Nothing really associated with shooting with it. The record does not stop when you go to standby mode which is annoying. Not a biggy you just gotta remember to stop recording then hit standby. It powers up fast, the internal IR is plenty bright enough (I pretty much only run on IR level 2 and never change from that from 10mtrs to 100mtrs light is plenty). I do find if there is a lot of dew on the grass I can get too much IR reflection or something so you get some glare. I don't know if this is a common NV thing. Its not that often and you just adjust the IR light a bit but just a note. So for me a thermal spotter, the Sytong HT60 LRF sitting on a 16inch Tikka T1x with suppressor shooting subs lets me shoot small blocks around stock without anything hearing or seeing me. Any stock don't get disturbed and block owners and neighbour's don't hear a thing. Pretty happy with the set up. PS. One last thing .. Fog. NV does not help see through fog. Just like a spotlight you cant see through it. But the thermal will. That can get frustrating when the thermal shows you a rabbit but you cant see it through your NV scope. Thermal scope would solve that but my budgets not up there at the mo.

@@kentoutdoorsinnz7014 Hey Kent - thanks for taking the time to give a detailed answer. Really helpful.
Just realised that you can't get the 940 with LRF, so of course you have the 850. I was just trying to justify the extra $400 (40%) for the LRF. I do have lots of reference points on the orchard here in Sth Auckland, but if I go elsewhere or to larger paddocks, then knowing the distance will be useful if I want to up my game.
I've been using a borrowed Pulsar Axion XM30 Key (thermal spotter) which has a slightly lessor sensor than the Pard with a 2.5x optical zoom. I'd class it as 'good' and I could go slightly worse if saves $. The digital zooms are useless in my opinion. I hear you regarding the optical zoom and find the 2.5x useable for rabbits, but a real pain scanning trees for possums unless further back. Amazing distance they have though. Agree that somewhere between 1-2x is the sweet spot for us. I don't want to spend more the $2k on a spotter, but not sure how cheap I can go to still do the job. Nothing beats hands on experience, but that is hard to come by. At some point I'll need to give the thermal back, so I may try spotting with my red light torch as it shows the eye shine really well and then quickly switching off and using NV which should allow them to relax again (red light is not too startling anyway). That's the $0 option!
I only have one suppressed .22, so I'd be using this in the daytime too. I bet NV is great at dusk/dawn. Good tip re the fog - I don't recall shooting in the fog too much here. The grass is usually wet with dew though. Does the internal IR have an OFF position is case I ever wanted to go with an external 940nm and switch off the 850nm? I have quite a bit of experience watching animal behaviour under the different LEDs. Cat's are a bit put off buy 850. Possums notice it, flick their tail around nervously, but tend not to run away. Rabbits, ferrets and rats don't seem to notice the 850. My red light torch sometimes makes the rabbits sit up, but lets be honest, most of the time they can see us in the dark and hear us anyway. It's just a matter of whether we're close enough to be a threat and whether they run. I guess they feel invisible and safe in the dark. Much appreciated!

Hey buddy no problem. I normally sit it on 2 and leave it there. A lot of dew on the grass does cause a bit of glare sometimes. Adjusting the IR focus can help a bit I.e. widen the beam and it reduces glare but its still a prob sometimes particularly in close.
