Discovering "4-6 Foot" Surf in Nebraska

- Never in my life did I imagine that I would actually find surf in Nebraska. I've dreamed of it, been stressed out over it, lost sleep thinking about it, but I never thought that it would actually be real. In my mind this is one of my greatest accomplishments. Before this, finding surf in Nebraska was probably more rare than finding life on Mars. We showed up to Lake McConaughy to actually see white caps & I can't believe we ended up surfing, let alone finding at least one wave that had a 4-6ft face. Never give up on your dreams, just keep trying! Thank you for the stoke & support FOR THE DREAM!!! - Ben

That was great! Thanks for giving our lake a try! I spent countless hours as a kid in the ‘70’s bodysurfing and boogie boarding in SUMMER waves. . . I’ve ice skates and ridden an ice boat on that lake in the winter. . . But you’re just nuts-I love it!!! So glad you liked it. Come back in the summer!

Freakin AMAZING!! I live in Ogallala, 15 miles South of Lake McConaughy. Who knew anyone could/would surf on the lake... EVER, without some sort of a sail or kite!! Looks like the Jersey Boy did it! Awesome!! Now come back in the summer and enjoy our incredible beaches! Sharin’ the VID! ✋🏻🤟🏻✌🏻

I surfed when I was young and lived in Hawaii but I’ve been in Ogallala for most of my life and lake Mac is my home away from home. I always see these waves and say to myself that they are definitely rideable. Props to you for bearing the cold!! Awesome video to watch man. Glad you had fun

@@BenGravyy Going on 23 years sobriety myself. I live in Cleveland and always heard of guys surfing the lake. All these years of watching surfing vids and all of your’s, maybe one day I’ll get the guts to go do it. Ive surfed a few times, but not proficient. I just moved to Denver a few days ago and have been looking into Lake McConaughy. How did I know out of anyone on the world wide web, you'd have the footage? Mad respect! I've been chasing storms on the Great Lakes for the past 5 years, and in Texas before then, so I'm used to finding hidden gems. This however would take the cake...

Believe it or not I've seen days that large in the summer there. I actually brought a 7'6" Doug Haut pintail out to The Mac in the summer of 1991 and had a blast.

Windsurfing at Lake Mac is tons of fun, very warm nice water in the summer. When you hit a very windy day (which there are lots, of but seem to be random) it would be great to bring out the surf board. Incidentally Kite surfing and spear fishing are also popular in the "Atlantic of the West", "Carribean of Nebraska" or my favorite and no offense "Redneck Riviera".
Caribbean of Nebraska is right! Nice and warm (in the summer) water with white Karstian limestone geography and white sand beaches. Feels so much like South Florida it's uncanny!

I loved it! As a Nebraska boy, I've seen bigger, crazier waves out there at Lake Mac, but I've never considered getting in/on the water when they are smacking around. Glad you did it! And glad you enjoyed it.

13:39. I shot a turkey right there a few years back. Water's edge was about 1/4 mile away at the time. What's really impressive about you surfing that lake is that the shoreline can easily move 1/2 mile throughout the year. Good to see someone actually enjoying that wind and those waves. They usually ruin a day of fishing.
You are the master of the novelty wave I’m from Nebraska would never have imagined seeing surfing there. Maybe behind the barges on the Missouri but this was amazing to see. 🤙🏻🤙🏻

The video can never do full justice honestly. Even for the experience of riding the waves. They look small and dribbly in the vid but riding that energy is amazing

This is when the lake is 30' below full pool. The waves are larger when the lake is at full pool.

That’s one of my fav lakes/places on Earth.

Pretty much grew up on that lake and you didn't see the biggest ones. There have been waves that washed out portions of the road at the top of the dam. Glad you had fun.

@@BenGravyy Very cool to see. Our cabin is a bay over from your first spot. You were in the right place for the biggest waves. When the wind is out of the west or northwest and sustained they can definitely build way bigger than even you saw. We've got some crazy pictures of them breaking with spray going over the cliffs.

@@BenGravyy They usually occur during storms. The one that washed out a portion of the road was in the 70's. The lake was completely full (it's still about 20 from the top of the damn when full) and there was an early winter storm.

May and June can be good. But, October rocks! Lake is very low now and likely next summer due to drought creating many point breaks working in major wind directions (SE-S and W-NW). Would be honored to show you around.

Track the wind brah
The best for this lake was wind finder. It’ll never give you the swell, but it shows wind speed. 30-40 will create waves over 15 miles of fetch

There is a spot on Lake Murray SC I have used a boogie board on. Big water into a narrow channel between two high points and on one side its 145 ft deep, the "pinch" between hills is only 3-6 feet. When its "right", a long jello peeler forms and unzips across the shallows. Its like the Skelton bay for r/c surfers. Maybe the next "quest" is for best r/c "micro waves".
