Thanks! That was helpful. I hadn't thought of the terraces, or using branches as nails.

I have 2 eggplants that have produced 50 + fruits and are still going strong ! They are in a 4 year old hugel dug into sandy "soil" in NE Florida. Collards in the same beds in the first year were 3-5' in diameter. It keeps getting better especially if you add more organic material every chance you get. I recycle paths of wood chips into the hugels every other year.

Awesome to hear! Thanks for the comment, it will help give this video and hügelkultur more credibility.

BEST video yet on how to do a hugelkultur. !!!! No one mentioned standing the logs on end!!! We are right in the beginning so we can do that. I heard of the terraces but not with sticks- love it!!! Thank you!! But wish you had given the pros & cons on new wood vs. old wood. I think I will alternate them.

Loved your animation! I will add from my research digging a trench may not be necessary and may even be detrimental depending on the rainfall/dry periods, in general it seems the less rainfall the deeper the trench needs to be to last long into the dry periods, for anyone doing multiple hugels it might be worth experimenting to find that goldilocks zone for your area

When doing my huglekultur beds, I always soak down before putting topping on, and plant few days later. Haven't watered in over 5 years

@benz merc yes as soon as they are finished. Check th P.h. of the soil first and make any adjustments you need for your bed before planting. Good luck

Do this with any soil, but instead of using cover crop and waiting for a year, as you build, soak each layer with JMS and JLF. Both are very easy and cheap to make with only local resources, regardless of where you live.
After the mound is completed, soak it once a week with JMS for at least 4 weeks, waiting 1 week after the last soak to feed it with JLF and then put in your transplants or seeds.
This even worked in the extremely dead soil of the Mohave desert, it should be a dream for most others.

@@tedijune6759 look up the jadam growing system on UA-cam. There's an older Korean gentleman that gives free lectures, I believe there's 14 explaining what it is in detail. It's extremely easy, works with local resources regardless of where you live, and is practically free. It's something he learned from his father and he passes it freely to poor folks that live and depressed areas to learn how to provide for themselves and work with what they've been given. And be productive in the process. A lot of knowledge working with nature.

Can you provide some info on what type of wood is better for good results? Or perhaps those to avoid? Hardwood or Softwoods in general? I'm sure that black walnut would be a no-no. TY!

If you don't have much garden waste to build a hugelkultur bed, phone a local gardener. They will have a steady supply of fresh plant material for free.
Heck, when I was a gardener, I'd have dropped it off for you! Saves me a trip to the tip
Tree surgeons for logs and mulch - again, they'll be happy to give you some

I think you could start right away, but in ideal circumstance you'd probably want to wait about one year. plant something simple that will fix nitrogin right away and then whatever your heart desires ;)

Why does there always have to be irritating background music on these videos, because you can’t hear what the person is saying properly and it’s extremely annoying and unnecessary.
