Low tack painter's tape will pull off cleanly, leaving no tape residue that needs to be removed. I have never seen anyone use mineral spirits/paint thinner to clean a fretboard. Everyone that I know uses naptha or ronsonol. Both leave no greasy feeling like paint thinner, and no nasty smell either like paint thinner does.

After setting the proper nut slot height, why didn’t you check the neck relief and set that correctly prior to checking the action at the 12 fret?
