- In this video, I break out the wood chipper in order to help mitigate some of the mud issues we always have this time of year. I have been making piles of brush in various areas awaiting time to chip them up.

Forty years ago when we lived in Southern Illinois we would get on the list at the electric and phone companies when they are clearing power and phone lines they would drop you a load of wood chips any where that you want. I had them dump the chips just outside of the barn and used it for bedding and keeping the livestock dry. It worked out real good and I even was able to clean out the stalls and put the material on the garden. We were very successful in raising an excellent garden as well we put it around fruit trees.

I loved the sarcasm about the chipper at the start of this video. It's like yeah, I didn't think of that......
we had a muddy driveway and we also placed woodchip there. It works because the chips absorb moisture, unlike gravel.
I could see that chipper sure being handy around a wooded hillside farm!
years ago I used empty oil bottles filled with fuel in a nail bag to be able to use weed eater around farmstead without stopping and having to go back to fuel cans.
Easy of people to make suggestions when it it other people's money. I pray 2021 is better for all of us.

Excellent tip with using wood chips. I have a similar chipper for my compact tractor, with a 6-in capacity. It literally handles 95% of everything I would ever need to chip! 👍
Been using chips w the horses for years. Sometimes, I still have mud, but it's not that sticky stuff that sucks your boots off. Still a win.

Very cute the pigs following you around like puppies! I found a chipper a few days ago on marketplace, for a pretty decent deal. Belt driven feed roller, so hopefully my old 2N can handle it. Took possession of some of the wife's family's property in Maine, very much wooded. The hard part will be convincing her to let me buy the chipper 😂
Check out Woodland Mills chippers. You get auto feed for a very reasonable price.(6" capacity= $2899) The hydraulic auto feed is self contained. No tractor remotes needed. I wouldnt trade mine for anything.

I worked at a small saw mill in Woodenville Washington called the Saginaw Mill when I was in high school. (1977-79) It at one time had been steam operated with the old wide belts running everything. That had been switched out with electric motors but everything else was original.
The head sawer had come home from WWII and that was the only job he ever had. He sat on a tractor seat with only a 1/2 inch wire screen between him and the shotgun mill. It had a saw blade about 8 feet in diameter with replaceable teeth.
At some point they filled in the mill pond with wood chips and sawdust. Instead of a mule boat, they used an old Michigan Log Loader. That pit full of rotting wood was a never ending source of difficulty. I see the advantage of putting chips in the hog pen but, you are wise in not putting them on your road.

In my younger days I had a 77 Camaro set up for weekend drag racing and a Buick century. No tickets with the Camaro. Lots of tickets with the Buick. The Camaro you knew when you were moving but the Buick would be smooth as silk at 100 mph.

ooh dang, I can hear how dull those blades are - sharpen 'em, and you won't need the "Corvette" auto-feed - they auto feed themselves when the blade is sharp enough, to the point that you just need to mind your hand not getting whipped by the rapidly feeding branches!

yeah and it won't reject pieces either unless they're too large. that's actually a sign that your blades are getting *very* dull, to the point that a failure on the chipper assembly could occur - I highly recommend looking at the service schedule and *definitely* sharpening the blades. happy chipping, sir! thanks for the content!

The lack of auto-feed on the chipper is probably safer too. Less chance of catching your sleeve and getting pulled into the machine.
Troy... I am moving from San Francisco to Upstate NY. I might as well snatch it and take it with me. My families house is on one third an acre in San Francisco and not attached to anything. I feel like I live on a farm. I bought land to start one :)
For such a small trailer, could you bolt a hitch to the chipper? You could then easily tractor out to rescue chips from wherever tops or limbs may lie.

I think hydraulic feed chippers may be overrated. Granted, my total hands on experience with chippers has been with 5 and 8hp craftsman/mtd chipper shredders, and an old 18 hp DR chipper. The mtd machines are all flimsy and need modifications to be halfway decent, but razor sharp they work. The DR is a little beast if you keep sharp knives, keep the bed plate adjusted and sharp. A sharp and well tuned pinch/gravity fed chipper will run two people half to death if you want to keep branches in the hopper, and I don't like running those gas engines without working them because they burn too much fuel just sitting there.
I see plenty of videos of people struggling to get limbs to start into the feed wheels of hydraulic feed chippers, and once feeding, they feed slow.
When I tune up my DR chipper, you better stand back and be careful or it will whip you because it's pulling the branches in so fast. Depending on the size of the branch, that can lead to choking, since there is nothing to govern the speed of the branch against the speed of the engine. That, to me, is the main advantage of hydraulic feed, since you can force a slower feed, you'll be less likely to choke it down. For the average homestead, would just as soon have a gravity/pinch feed and keep it sharp. Keep the bed plate as close as possible...and remember that the thicker the flywheel, the less it will flex and push away from the bed plate. Oh, and chip green if you want to chip big since it hardens up after it dries out.

I really like that old Kioti tractor of yours. Have you had many issues with it? Seems like the workhorse of your homestead.
It has been a great tractor the last 17 years. Had to replace the front right axle and a hose or two but other than that, it has been perfect
the chips will attract insects and goggas and then the chickens will have a field day scratching in the chips

Think about mixing your organics with minerals. Crusher-run gravel goes a long way.
So, gloves. Always a good idea when working with power tools.
I purposely do not wear gloves when chipping. Branches can snag on the back of the gloves as they are being pulled in.
Troy you may need to explain to these young people what a Chevette car is . some may not be as smart as you and I or as old lol

Just a suggestion: When handling locus or other limbs and brush.....wear gloves.
I usually do but I don’t wear glove when chipping. No emergency shut off on pro chipper and the branches hang on the gloves some times. I like my hands too much!
