I loved this book and read it so many times as a child. I always admired that Sara believed she was obliged by her privilege to behave as well as possible. Also, it's a relief to children to read stories that show adults as they actually are instead of lying that they're all wise and noble. (They're actually seriously ruthless.)

I love a little princess...I never thought of it as a reverse cinderella. I loved the way it looked at the importance of storytelling and the role stories play in survival and mental resilience. I knew I'd see this book on the advent!

I read this book so many times as a kid and I've recently pulled out my old copy of it and it's my favorite story all over again :) I absolutely loved Sara's mindset towards everything. Especially in all the bad things that happened to her. It is the only book that left a strong lasting impression on me as a child and I wanted nothing more than to be like Sara. I wish I could adequately describe how good it is..

It wasn’t until last year that I realized a little princess was a book because growing up I had the movie on DVD and there would be time when I watched it a lot and I remember always loving the story and Sarah being such a strong character in the movie and I can’t wait to actually read the book. I loved the secret garden and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna like this book :)

Loved this book both as a little girl and as an adult. Pure magic. The words "boarding school" in books always grab my attention. It's easy to understand why it's on your list!

This is one of my all-time favorite stories. Sara is a perfect example of how to be the person you want to be, even when adversity strikes.

This is a book that my mother read aloud to me. I read it to my daughter. And if she gets to have a daughter I am pretty sure she will do the same.

Hi, Claudia, I found this book as an adult and wished so much, I had found it as a child for comforting some bad experiences... But I’m glad, I AM adult, so I can decide what to read, even Children books, I missed in my childhood😉. Thank you for sharing, Monika❣️

I love your description of how morals do not need to depend on wealth. The same way poor kids should not be looked down to, so shouldnt spoiled rich kids. Good and bad are everywhere after all.

Read Young Torless by Robert Musil. It is a novel about a young boy who is sent to an exclusive boarding school in Austria Hungary before World War 1. It is about sadism and the abuse of power in the closed universe of a boarding school. It is a short read, but it is worth it.

This sounds so lovely and amazing! I bought myself a copy because I loved The Secret Garden so much, but I still haven't gotten to it. I love the idea of subverting the spoiled rich girl trope. I had no idea that was a part of the book.

It's what made this book so special, it really tackles wealth and class issues in a really interesting way (obviously within the context of its time)

Theres an anime version of it called "Little Princess Sara"that made an insane change to the ending. They had Sara reward an unapologetic Miss Minchin with £100,000 reward for the relentless child abuse, which they took up a notch in that version. There they had Minchin actually throw Sara out on the street and she almost died sleeping in a barn with no roof. That one change of rewarding the villain made the entire story not work. That and the fact that they introduced a young male friend Sara met on her errands with a loving family of her own who actually offered to take her in but she rejected it for no reason other than plot requirement. I don't know if something got lost in translation between Japanese and English culture, but they just did not get it.
The Hollywood changes is a change I understand for modern movie audiences even though it does weaken the story a little it doesn't destroy the story's core themes, which is fundamentally a morality tale. Get that wrong and nothing else works.

  • @writerspen010

Idk why, but I always forget this is a novel. I grew up watching the 90s film adaptation, which to this day I _ADORE._ The author is the same as The Secret Garden, right? That's another one I didn't really think to read until I was an adult, and a part of me feels like I missed out on having a child's perspective and nostalgia for the story, but what can you do? I think I'll pick this one up the next time I want to buy a new book. I'd be curious to know what you think of the films and which you think the most faithful adaptation. I know of only two: the one from the 90s starring the hotel heiress (she's great in it, but I always forget her name) as Sara Crewe and the 30s adaptation with Shirley Temple. Anyway, thanks for the review and reminder to read that story ^_^

I've not seen any adaptation of this, so don't really have an opinion. I'm not much of a film person really.
