    I swear, I SWEAR that the opening flying scene was the main inspiration DreamWorks had for creating the How to Train Your Dragon franchise as we know it. I'm absolutely sure of that.

    As I said in Great Mouse Detective, this was one of the pillars of my childhood. Watched this one dozens of times. I never even saw the original until I was in my late teens.
    One of the reasons I love this movie is Cody. He is a kid hero, but he doesn't use slapstick or Home Alone tactics, has a pocket knife, and overall is written very realistically.
    It also helps that the animation is amazing. Marahute is amazingly animated and that scene with Cody skating along the river is breathtaking.

    • @ShinobiPXO
      @ShinobiPXO 7 років тому +8

      I think that;s the problem with this movie. The kid is more the protagonist than the mice are. The movie is more about this boy trying to save the eagle, rather than the two mice who are trying to save him. They could have just made this movie about Cody and NOT have he rescuers involved at all

I was so happy to hear you review it and really praise it. It brought me back to childhood and not the way most Disney sequels do where I think, "ooh, THAT was part of my childhood? Ew!" No. Not this movie. I'm glad this is one of my childhood movies that can be critically praised and not panned so I can enjoy it again as an adult when I want to feel nostalgic. +Demian Rangel I don't think ANY bird is big enough to carry a boy on it's back, mostly because you have to be very lightweight in order to fly. The American Condor is a vulture that's regarded as one of the biggest birds to ever fly, and they only weigh about 33 lbs (15 kg). Compare that with a little boy that's easily 80 or 50 lbs, and you'll see why it's just utterly impossible. At least, it's impossible for a bird to carry a boy and *fly up*, I bet a bird could find a way to glide down if you'd consider that flying.
      Luckily animation can totally make this look great and more than a little believable.

    • @NicoUnken
      @NicoUnken 9 років тому +3

      deathlegionair True... Y'know nature has surprised us before. Maybe animals could find some way that we just can't see. It's probably just incredibly unlikely rather than entirely impossible.

    • @NicoUnken
      @NicoUnken 9 років тому +3

      Demian Rangel Adding additionally to that, there really aren't any living birds nowadays that would have the strength to do that... But there are millions of years of history before humans, and there were many giant birds and flying reptiles of all kinds. Many of which haven't been discovered. So it isn't really that a flying animal of this size and power *couldn't* exist, it's that they simply don't exist now. So there can be a level of truth to even the fictional interpretations.

    "The Rescuers Down Under" is the most underrated Disney classics of all time and I enjoyed this movie when I was a kid. Then as an adult, it looks impressive and it's much better than the first one which doesn't hold up. I really enjoy the new adventure about two mice are going to rescue a little boy in Australia from a meanest hunter who captures animals including obsesses of getting a huge bird. Voice acting is great including George C. Scott and John Candy portrayed their cool roles. The animation looks fantastic and that opening scene where the boy flies with the huge bird was amazing. I love that part where bird pushes the boy to the waterfall and boom, beautiful. One of the best memorable scenes in Disney. 25 years of seeing a classic Disney and it should be memorize as now. I know exactly why people overlook it: it's because 99% of Disney sequels are aweful, and people have learnt this.
    Turns out, this movie is actually good.

    I'm sooooooo glad nostalgia critic covered this one. this movie WAS my childhood.
    I wore through the tape on my VHS copy of it, I wanted to be that little boy and ride the giant eagle, and even now the opening title card just...it gets me every time. The music, the images, it's by far my favorite intro sequence of all time. This was one of the first movies where I watched it and really felt like I was doing whatever the camera was doing: flying along with the eagle, crawling with the lizard. Coming back to the title sequence, it really felt like I was flying through a field in Australia. I was actually disappointed when I saw a real eagle for the first time, because when I saw this movie at age 4 or 5 and saw how ginormous the eagle in the movie was, that was all I had to go on, so I thought that was how big they really were! I spent weeks babbling about how excited I was to see an actual eagle.
    this movie and it's predecessor both hold very special places in my heart, but yeah, this was one of maybe a half dozen films I've watched consistently over and over and am unashamed to admit I still watch today.

    Yeeeeeah you just increased my opinion of Doug by like 4164% - this is a criminally underrated movie that was set up for failure by Disney and is actually an INCREDIBLY important film in the history of animation. It was the very first animated film to be completely digitally animated and essentially pioneered the CAPS process (which, yaknow, no one knows because the marketing was completely hamstrung and it had to compete against the juggernaut that was Home Alone on its opening weekend) so essentially the entire latter half of the Disney Renaissance has this movie's DNA all over it.
    Not to mention, it's a pretty great adventure movie regardless. Plus, come on, that opening sequence is just breathtaking. The animation of that eagle's flight lived rent free in my head for my entire childhood based on a single viewing of the movie as a kid. I think it's my third favourite mouse-related animated feature - behind Secret of NIMH and An American Tail (Don Bluth is like, at least 50% responsible for the animation resurgence in the 80s which lead directly to the Disney Renaissance)
    Anyway, great vid. I'm not the BIGGEST fan of Doug's stuff (especially not anything recent) but he definitely has some good takes now and then. And you can't deny he had his own fairly large influence on the review landscape and the general internet culture in his prime.

Rescuers Down Under REALLY Deserves Better

    I also had never been more interested in a villain before, than McLeach. He was so charismatic and entertaining, he is easily my favorite villain in disney. Especially since he doesnt have some over hyped motive or (Usually) catchy song to explain his character.

    I didn't even fully KNOW about the first Rescuers movie until I was a teenager. THIS was the one I had as a kid, and I think, like many movies, I warped the tape from watching it so much. It's one of those movies I could just watch over and over again, and not because we had a limited movie library(Back when Disney Channel was a VERY premium channel, we recorded a LOT of movies to VHS). Marahute's flight was and always will be my favorite scene in the movie, besides Wilbur's time in the hospital truck(Just the entire interaction of him with the medical staff!)

  • @TheStoneSpiral

    When I was a kid in Adventure Club I got in a bit of a thing with a counselor about watching 'The Rescuers' vs 'The Rescuers Downunder'. I had said 'We saw that one already', when it came to watching The Rescuers while waiting for parents to pick us up.. frustrated she asked what I wanted to see and I said 'Rescuers Downunder'. And she said 'We just saw that one too' in the snappy tone of a fed up adult that didn't like a child's reasoning. Which was true.
    At the time I really hated the first one, and I loved the second one. These days I know what I was trying to express with my disinterest. The Downunder one is *beautiful* with great scenes, characters, dialogue, it's so much more fun to look at and experience than the first one which was ugly and had that style of animation I still abhor as an adult.
    I wish sometimes I could go back and explain that the first one is just a piece of shit compared to the second one and she shouldn't subject us to the lesser of them just because she's feeling snippy.

On top that, this movie was really memorable, the characters, the flying, the villain, the scenery, everything about this movie you could remember even when you've seen it only once, it's a great movie.

      I can just imagine a gameplay scene where you're riding on Marahute, and trying to save Cody from going over the waterfall,
      while flying through speed boost rings, and fending off heartless and cocodiles who try and slow you down. And if you succeed, it'll play that iconic diving cutscene.
