    RemoteID exposed that the FAA has no idea what is in the sky unless there is hardware that tells them. Now any foreign actor knows just not to use remoteID and can be tracked. Good work FAA.

      That's how it's always been. In war, it's safe to assume that any airborne threat without an IFF transponder is the enemy. Not so in the civilian world.

    • @16-BITFPV
      @16-BITFPV 4 місяці тому +2

      Common sense, how would anything be tracked without hardware?

    • @foldionepapyrus3441
      @foldionepapyrus3441 4 місяці тому +1

      @@16-BITFPV You'd think at least around sensitive areas active radar, LIDAR, RF control signal sniffing, and possibly Visual and Acoustic detection systems (even if that is just people with binocular) would be in use. Actually easy enough to detect and track even the small drone if you are looking (especially at the altitudes xjet is talking about. As the hard part is verifying it isn't a perfectly natural feather covered bird at altitude, close to the ground there is so much more noise in the signals its trickier... So if you do a RemoteID concept right its really not more than a transponder that means the folks on the ground and those you are sharing the airspace with know who you are, where you are etc to avoid accident - anything that isn't broadcasting a 'I'm XYZ, I'm your freind' signal is likely hostile and should be investigated or just destroyed...

    Remote ID was an effort to close down the consumer side of drones; it's not meant to do anything otherwise; just allow big businesses to have unfettered access to the skies. Anything else is incidental. With any failure, it's just going to result in the powers that be suggesting that they need to go further with more restrictions on consumer drones.

    Before commercial drones were available, there were hobbyists building quadcopters, hexacopters and octocopters from scratch and sharing design information online. There is nothing stopping a technically skilled person from digging up the designs from the Web and building one's own drones that don't embody Remote ID and potentially greatly exceed the range and altitude capabilities of those early efforts.

    This past weekend .. "An unprecedented number of airplanes, helicopters, and drones swooping in to help with Hurricane Helene recovery efforts are now posing a safety hazard.
    There were 30 near-mid-air collisions last Saturday," according to a federal source.
    The major issue here is that the general aviation principle of "seen and be seen" is broken when it comes to FAA rules/procedures for crewed and uncrewed aircraft. Both crewed and uncrewed aircraft are essential in post-event disaster scenarios like with hurricane Helene. Drones to inspect infrastructure and identify people in need of rescue and supplies. Crewed helicopters and airplanes to airlift people and supplies. Add in the varied terrain in a mountainous region where drones are flying below 400 feet AGL (ground reference), while crewed vehicles are operation based on pressure altitude ASL (sea level reference), and potential for overlapping operations greatly increases.
    The FAA and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Admin) really need to re-examine such scenarios as we see more climate induce disasters and catastrophic weather events (flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, etc). So far the policy with respect to wildfires is to ground crewed aircraft if any drone is spotted flying. This greatly hampers efforts by firefighters, as unexpected delays are introduced randomly. Much time wasted in attempts to track down a drone operator.
    Ideally both crewed and unscrewed aircraft would broadcast on common frequencies so they could be seen and alerted to each others presence. ie: a common shared frequency for sharing position and altitude data.

    The new rules in NZ are a joke.
    We have/had Jet Aircraft pilots(Air NZ) at my RC Club. They now arnt qualifiied to be a spotter for RC flyers .
    Seems real pilots arnt qualified enough to look out for low flying planes .
    We'll see how many in NZ DONT choose to resit their Wings badges , now that many have to be renew
    them next year (now a required 5 year renewal) . I bet many will say stuff it rather than re-sit wings & just fly at a park rather than a RC Club with the RC Club's restrictive rules & regs

    • @xjet
      @xjet  4 місяці тому +1

      MFNZ, the "recognised organisation" for RC model flying, has a very tricky problem on its hands -- trying to appease the bureaucrats whilst protecting the freedoms of its members. Personally, I believe they should have stood up for our rights more than they have done (but others will doubtless disagree and I respect their opinions). What MFNZ, CAA and MoT have to understand is that you can tie someone up with the rubber bands of over-regulation and keep increasing the tension but eventually, when you over-do it, those bands will snap and become useless. I believe we're reaching that point now.
      Our current ruleset for RC/drones (part 101) came into effect in 2015 and there have been no substantive changes since.
      We used to be smart enough to realise that something under 100g was just a toy and ought not be covered by regulations that also cover 14.9Kg octocopters -- but that is no longer the case. Whereas other countries (such as Canada and the UK) have recognised that sub250g craft are pretty harmless, and are therefore pretty unrestricted, we have no such intelligence behind our rules and I break the rules every time I fly my 25g Mobula 6 around the house using FPV.
      MFNZ has said "no problem, just apply for a BVLOS waiver" -- but the brainboxes at MFNZ and CAA still believe that to fly a 25g tinywhoop around my house I'd need signs, traffic management and an armful of forms before such an activity could be performed safely. I've got news for them... I do this several times a week (without the bureaucratic overhead) and hardly anyone has died as a result.
      The property-permission provision of 101 is also being widely ignored because it effectively means that every part of NZ, aside from a few council parks and your own property, is a no-fly zone unless you can get the permission of those who own or occupy that property. Tourists coming to NZ with their drone will have almost zero opportunity to fly it legally under this part of the rule -- so they just do it illegally, often out of ignorance.
      Where are the bodies?
      After consulting, back in 2021 we were promised changes. We're now approaching 2015 and we've got nothing.
      CAA often refers to itself as a "fast follower" in terms of regulation.
      Not this time eh?

    I agree the goal is to clear the skies. These violating drones in the USA reported by using RID will mean the gov't will double down on RID. Just wait for RID 2.0 where the RID module MUST comply will being able to receive and MUST be connected to the flight controller. In Canada, sub250 is still safe for recreational and commercial use. No license or registration required, but I can't see Transport Canada leaving sub250 alone as they eventually cave in to commercial interests and the need to create rules to justify there positions and copy the rules of the FAA.

( obviously I knew it was close just never considered how close) I was flying just on the side of the road as police car are driving by and still nobody said a single thing to me.

    Other possible reasons Bruce. I would not at all exclude the possibility that many if not all of these sighting are either pilots misinterpreting what they have "seen" (recall what has been said before about how difficult it will be to see a small (or even medium sized) UAV from an aircraft travelling at 400-500 mph (or even faster if military jets)), or it is a narrative put out there to help the agenda of the military. You can just imagine the conversation about needing a reason to increase military spending or put in place even more rules to keep pesky UAV fliers out of the skies so they are free for military use (note that the vast majority of airspace is for military use). I agree though that RID is a piece of nonsense and does nothing for safety. I have submitted these views to our CAA when they have "consulted" (i.e. done what they have to by statute, but with no real intention to listen to the responses) on RID and other changes to UAV rules. Risk-based legislation? They wouldn't know it if it jumped up and bit them (and clearly they won't have done their risk assessment on that happening!). P.S. I just watched that P.O.S. news report. Sensationalist rubbish. What has happened to proper investigative journalism, checking facts, questioning the narrative? All gone to crap it seems (plus the ominous music whenever a drone in flight was being shown!). Holy crap and I thought our news reporting was rubbish.

    A nearby military base here in Australia operates a commercial drone detector system with a 5km range. It detects the interface signals between the drone and controller. As to doing something about it like jamming or spoofing the signal, they are currently not empowered. I suppose they could coordinate with the Police to figure out who was at the controller's location via mobile phone pinging, or even attendance if they are fast enough. Unlikely to occur unless it is a regular or persistent thing.

    This is a very important story to get out. This proves a few things: 1. Remote ID will never work. 2. The feds will only use remote ID to go after hobbyists who break a rule for benign purposes. 3. Going after hobbyists is a form a scapegoating to make it look like the government is in control when they are certainly not. 4. If foreign actors want to spy on us, there are plenty of ways they can obtain a drone that is unrestricted in software any fly it illegally where ever they want in the US. 5. The Chinese balloon was nothing. The Chinese and many other countries are probably flying drones where ever they want in the U.S. as we speak! 6. Banning hobbyists from buying drones which have all software restrictions anyway (DJI) will only prevent U.S. citizens from learning how to fly and use drones. I can tell you that a technology like drones cannot be stopped. The only solution is to develop and build specialized drones that are designed to go after violating drones and either capture or destroy them.

Some of these cities have shown off their command-centers where they have access to cameras all over the city. I really need to find the video but in the CC they had access to police-body-cameras, the planes flying over the city to track speeders... just all sorts of fancy stuff to put up on the 50-100 screens.

    So I get this right a jet fighter pilot flying around at least 200 mph saw a drone a mile away. Now even the biggest drone's we have are the size of a microwave or a large goose, how can a pilot spot something that small from a mile away and doing 200+ mph. Realistically some of these drone reports are simply impossible to happen, maybe they should have a look at the people who report them.

    Drone sightings but no visual ID to confirm. I wonder which government agency these drones really belonged to? Here in UK we do not yet have the stupidity of Remote ID. Instead, we fine motorhome owners £3000 for reporting illegal entry by would be illgal mmigrants. We shut down the last coal fired power station as the cost of electricity rises with every windmiill and solar panel that comes into use becoming one of the world's highest priced (75% more than in the USA), The government takes money designated to keep pensioners warm and gives it to train drivers. Certain old people calling police nasty names can find themselves doing a two year stretch for the "offence" within a couple of weeks while other certain young people can break a police officers nose and still be left walking the streets.

    All remote id and the other over-baked regulations did for me was drive me out of the sport! I used to fly my little Latrax Alias every night in my own driveway, never venturing more than 10m up, but then the absurd regulations started showing up so legally I couldn't even fly within 5 miles of any school yard (which could theoretically be emergency med-evac landing sites) which meant as a disabled person I was realistically out of luck at being able to fly anywhere. Gave away my big GPS Free-X drone (that I had just added FPV to, but never even got to fly it that way) after that, cause I sure couldn't use it...
    (I know, all the people who live in the wide open spaces of the American mid-west and south west will say "Oh, just ignore the regulations and fly anyway"! Doesn't work when one out of ever 5 of my neighbors work for the Federal government in a highly populated area. $10,000 fines just for flying in my drive way aren't worth it)!
