  • While I continue my travelling adventures, it was suggested by ‪@ct_refuse‬ that I visit Rangiora and film their rubbish collection service. I was reluctant to make this trip away from my planned travels, but I was not disappointed.
    Thank you to all the amazing drivers I filmed on this day; I managed to get a lot of great content to use over multiple videos.
    This video is dedicated to the rubbish collection service.
    A unique point of difference to this rubbish service is they still collect official Waimakariri District Council (WDC) rubbish bags alongside the provided wheelie bins. This is ideal for those who don't produce a lot of rubbish or may struggle to get their wheelie bins out to the street. It is perfect also for those who might be producing a lot of rubbish and need some extra pickups.
    With this unique difference comes a unique truck. With the standard bin arm which extends out to grab wheelie bins, it also has a box just behind the driver's cab. Thanks to the cab design being low to the ground, this LEV allows the driver to easily get out, grab the rubbish bags and place into this box. Once the box is full, it is lifted by a rail system and emptied into the hopper, similar to how a wheelie bin would be emptied.
    Rangiora is 28km north of Christchurch and is a part of the Waimakariri District Council. Here, Waste Management has the contract to collect residents' bins: Red for rubbish, Yellow for recycling and Green for organic waste (an opt in service).
    The Organic green waste service is a weekly collection however rubbish and recycling are collected on alternative weeks.
    Thank you to the amazing drivers being so accepting of me film them and tolerating me following them around.
    This is the Rubbish/Garbage video only, if you would like to see the full video or the Recycling and Organics truck only, check out the following links:

    Such a amazing video and cool system

      Yes, a very different system used here to what I am used to. Made me wonder if my council ever adapted a wheelie bin collection alongside their current bag service, if this is what it might look like.

    This is really cool!
    Another unusual and unique system to NZ.
    I'm not normally a fan of the Merc cabs, but it this is one of the few trucks that I do like it on, Once if found out it had the 'box lifter' I was hoping That I'd get to see it in action, and I wasn't disappointed, got a few good lifts! I did notice at 7:47 the box didn't empty fully, dosen't seem to be much a shaker, just straight up and down. Would be cool to see a hopper view on this truck, I would imagine its packer would be slightly different? I was hoping for a shot like at 10:37, showing the full length of the truck, I am wondering with the addition of the box, is the chassis slightly longer than normal? great final clip to end the video, showing all 3 trucks collecting together, Shows how there a bit different for each waste stream. This was really enjoyable to wacth, great video showing of this very interesting truck.

      Thank you for your great comment!
      I'd agree, I'm not a big fan of these style of Merc cabs, but it is practical in this application.
      The box which holds the bags is very small, only probably designed for 4 bags and I think the driver may have over filled/pushed the rubbish down too hard for it to empty out; he'd probably have to pull them back out and do a second empty somewhere along the lines.
      Sadly I did not take my action camera with me to attach to a wheelie bin, so no compactor action this time sorry. I'd expect it to be a standard paddle type compactor.
      I'm not sure if the chassis is longer than normal, or if the body is simply mounted back further with a larger overhang at the back. I would say it is a standard body which has been modified with an extended and higher "slide" to accommodate the bag box to go up and empty into before the rubbish slides down into the compactor. And to accommodate this, is why the body is mounted further back than on most trucks. You can sort of see where it is extended from a normal truck in the video time stamps you mentioned above.
      I would have liked to spend longer following this truck but needed to get going; I wonder where else this system is used or if it is specific for this area?
      I stopped filming the two trucks, turned around to see the third coming so started filming again; wish the recycling truck was closer. Sadly I basically missed filming the organics duo waving out to me as they did their U-turn. But a great group of drivers here!

      @@NZRubbishTrucks Yeah, I've got your bug now of writing long coments haha. Did you find a council with recycling boxes and a kerb sort type system?

      @@BinandChill Why yes I did! But that is not good news sorry. A video yet to come, I was in Hawks Bay district (Napier and Hastings) two weeks ago (same week as I did the Wellington video). I haven't put the video together yet as I had a rough time with the local rubbish collectors there telling me to sod off and to not film.
      I did find one cool driver for standard side lift rubbish, but I know you want kerb recycling.
      I will see what I can produce out of the very short bits I got. I might have a wee clip of a glass recycling truck but not much else sorry outside of some crate photos.
      Lol, another long comment from me; sorry 😛

    Cool to see both of your videos from down here! I might have to get back out to the Waimak to get the rubbish on film to complete my set of videos. Far more bags out than I expected, certainly still a popular option obviously. WM also run two similar trucks in Selwyn - one of my recent videos features it if that interests you ;)) Did you end up getting any videos in Christchurch, or just stuck to the Waimak?

      Thanks for checking out my videos. My next free day was on Friday morning. But the weather turned cold and wet, not good for filming. I started following a rubbish truck and a green waste truck but when I parked up and got ready, they'd disappear in a different direction to what I was expecting, for example making a right turn vs a left turn.
      This was around the Papanui area. When leaving to the airport I noted a lot of trucks from all waste streams parked up on their 30 min.
      I did spot a white rear loader truck parked up at a food place on Papanui Road just before Main North Road and the driver and passenger got out; I wondered if by a fluke chance this might have been you at about 10am.

    is the box for council bags or for rubbish that’s on the ground?

    • @NZRubbishTrucks
      @NZRubbishTrucks  9 місяців тому

      Yes, this box is only used to transport the official black rubbish bags into the hopper of the truck. Though I'm sure if a bin was spilled, it could be used to pick up whatever spilled out.

    pointless device. Just dump the cart, refill the cart, then dump the cart again, repeat as necessary. The only reason you might need a trough is if you don't have a cart, but I can't imagine that would ever be the case.

    • @NZRubbishTrucks
      @NZRubbishTrucks  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comments. Yes, you'd think using the cart to reload bags would be an easier approach but not every resident has a cart as this is an optional extra so some stops have no cart out to reload bags into.
