- In this video I break down the Enlisted Air Force 4T0X1 Medical Laboratory Technician process and things to know before you join! Lab tech is a very fun and interesting career field and the US Air Force Enlisting process for it is a little complicated.
Feel free to leave questions in the comments and I will do my best to answer them!

I have a bachelors in chemistry. I tried to commission but my recruiter said I will wait till 2026. So I enlisted as a AF Reserve
BS you shouldnt need a recruiter to commision in the BSC. They are just trying to buff their numbers. Watch my commisioning video.
Thank you! I ship out in November. 🙌🏽 I kept hearing not great things about this job because everyone is "overworked", but your videos helped me see a nicer side 😊 I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind answering 🙏🏽
How many hours a week would you say you normally work?
I would like to get my Master's degree while in the Air Force (I already have a Bachelor's in Biology). Would that be a realistic goal with this career?
I also want to commission asap. (I enlisted because I didn't want to wait 1-2 years, plus I wanted to get the military experience while I waited) How likely would you say that is? And how long would it actually take?
Lastly, I would like to continue tutoring while I'm in Tech School. Would you think that's possible?
Thank you so much for your time and information!!! 🙏🏽
Your hours will depend on where you are stationed. Some ops are 24 hours and others are day shift only, so tutoring may be difficult except on weekends. i work a typical 40 hrs/wk.
Yes the air force will give you TA for one asters degree.
I think you are referring to route 1 for your MLS? If you want to commision you will need your MLS from ASCP with a passing score. Its very likely that they will take you if your already in, so long as they have the position open. Watch my last video.
@@FragranceProphetthank you so much! I was referring to tutoring during Tech School, specifically because I currently have a few students and I want to continue tutoring them as soon as I'm done with BMT. My recruiter assured me that it's very likely I'll be able to tutor as long as I manage my time efficiently. I just wanted to double-check because I figured not all tech school trainings are the same.
Also, I am married. Did I hear you say that Phase 1 is 9 months now!?! 😱 Would I be able to live with my husband during this time or will I have to wait until Phase 2?
Thanks again 🙏🏽
@@elizabethrivera-cruz6919 you Can live woth your husband, so long as you get approval from your MTL. You will need to add your spouse to your orders. I have only heard of people doing this and have no personal experience. When you get to phase 1, immediately see your Supervisor to start the process
Thank you sooo much for making this video! Discovered your channel last night & immediately subscribed. What is the likelihood of a trainee’s phase 2 base of tech school becoming his/her first duty station? Can a trainee request to stay at the phase 2 base if it happens to be closer to the trainee’s home? Also do you work alongside enlisted histopathologists? Or are they in a completely separate lab? Are their base options the same as medical laboratory technicians or do they have more/less base options?
@@queenofshortstv7847 it happened to me! I did mine at Luke and liked the workforce so I set it as my top base on my dreamsheet in VMPF. I made a video on how to get the base you want, I reccomend you watch it
@@queenofshortstv7847 histo- techs can work alongside labs but many hospitals don't have histopathology labs and send their samples out for reference testing. They will have much less option than regular lab techs
@@FragranceProphet Oh wow! Ok will do 👍
@@FragranceProphet Ohhh ok. I see. If I have any additional questions I’ll let you know. Thanks for the quick responses 🙏
I’m a certified phlebotomist and I was in school for MLT but because moving a lot (husband active duty) I left school. I’m trying to do MLT as a civilian but is almost impossible since there’s no school near the area. I took the asvab I got a good score but the recruiter told me that he can’t guarantee the job. I went to Army but I really want to go the AF route. What can I do?
@@yesenitah your recruiter CAN guarantee the job, he guaranteed it for me. Be careful what you say to the recruiter. Just tell him you will wait until a position opens for MLT, they always come around every couple months
Hello! Is the phase 2 process the same for Guard/Reserve?
@@Ranajsiaf yes
@ Thank you!
@FragranceProphet Hi again, I called a few recruiters and non seem interested in discussing/promoting this position. I’ve been told that medical is extremely hard to get in and there are no openings for this position. Do you have any recommendations for ANG recruiters? Feeling pretty discouraged :/
@Ranajsiaf they always say thay, we are a low manned career field. Stay diligent. I waited 4 months to get this job
@Ranajsiaf tell them to call you back when the job is open(it will I promise)
Some medical careers in the Air Force require you to have a bachelors degree. Does that apply for this MOS?
@@emozlut no, this is the Enlisted job so no college is required. 43T, medical laboratory officer, requires a bachelors degree
Is there a reserve for this mos ?
@@carlosh448 this position does have reservist, but I'm not sure what you need
@@FragranceProphet I have associate degree in math/science thinking going this route .
@@carlosh448 enlisted can come in with 0 college into this career field
Would you say is worth joining the AF if I already have a bachelors, ASCP certification, and a handful of years of experience? Or would I be better off staying in the industry?
@@KevinHernandez-ke6us if you want to commision, yes. Healthcare and benefits make the position competitive. But do Not enlist. Watch my last video
@@FragranceProphetthanks!
