I agree that this is a great song but Chuck Negron did not write it. The Three Dog Night did not write their songs, The song was originally written and sung by Harry Nilsson. Harry Nilsson wrote a lot of songs but only sang a few that became famous

@@crazyralph3585 shall we tarnish the legend of Elvis because he didn't write all the songs he sang? No. Who cares. Chuck Negron was able to take those songs and apply his magic touch to them to create the majestic image of Three Dog Night. They were spectacular then and they still are.

My mother had this album and I think it was somewhere in the 80s I played this song and she sang the whole thing. I asked her why she liked it so much, she said to me, "your father was drafted to Vietnam and One was the loneliest number." Always remembered that when I hear this jam.

Your mother has great taste in music. 1969, I was 14 yrs old, it was a very tough year as far as the War. Every person knew someone who had served in Vietnam or killed there. Finally the War ended in January 1973. I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1973. By April 1975, I was stationed on Okinawa and helped during the Evacuation of Saigon, total chaos.

He'd only been there 20 days when killed. It had to be a closed coffin funeral due to the condition of his body. I cried from the night we found out for 2 weeks before l could go back to school. Hundreds of folks showed up for his funeral.

The first time I heard this song was in 1970 sung by John Farnham who made it popular in Australia. I only heard this version and the original by Harry Nilsson many years later. It’s one of many songs that show how versatile Three Dog Night were.

Yes, the year I got married 1968, and the year my husband went to "Nam, soon after we wed. He would dance and blast music such as Three Dog Night and the entire "hootch" at Cam Rahn Bay would sing and dance until all hours.

Me. Isolation at home for almost 6 months (had flu, no not that one, then pneumonia). Covid tested last week; negative hurrah. I can see my ageing parents who I have barely been able to see, other than from my doorstep for 6 months and they only live 5 mins away. Can't wait.
TDN were a great tho underrated band. They always looked like they genuinely enjoyed performing. I was a young teen at the early 70's. What a time to be alive. Musically and fashion wise it was the best and most fun. What a time we had, what a time...
