  • Kayaked on 6/23 and 6/24/2020. The rapids are shown in order the level on the South Fork of the Clearwater was 2,560 cfs and dropping the Selway was at 9,200 cfs and the lochsa was at 5,160 cfs. I would use the South Fork of the Clearwater as your indicator. I wouldn't want to go if the South Fork was not dropping and my max level on the South Fork of Clearwater would be 3,000 cfs and dropping. This is a 35 mile wilderness run that drops 4,500 feet starting out as a small creek. It turns into a large tributary of the Selway at the confluence. We hiked in off of forest road 1166 near Red River Hot Springs using trail 541. It was a six mile hike with half of the hike being up hill going up the Red River. The second half of the hike was mostly down hill. Fairly good trail with some trees down on the trail. We tried to access Meadow Creek from the Magruder Corridor Road AKA forest service Road 468 but ran into snow. There is suppose to be a faint trail that starts at the Granite Springs Campground that is an easy 1.5 mile mostly flat and down hill trail. Should have called the Red River Ranger district at (208)842-2245 to verify road was open. The shuttle for this run takes 4 to 5 hours in each direction.
This video shows the end of our first day and finishing the run on the second day. The rapids are in shown in order. Lots of wood in the bottom 7 miles of this run.
There is a bridge at 13:12 that signals first mandatory portage is getting close.
14:07 is the first mandatory portage. We portaged on the left which is a horrible no trail steep hillside bushwack. We camped in a terrible spot after this portage and got slaughtered by the no see ums.
16:44 is 2nd mandatory portage that we did on the left it was much shorter and not as steep.
19:45 bigger rapid easier scout on the left
30:58 Ran top part of rapid then portage the bottom which looked like a horrible sieve pile
36:28 Walked top drop which probably goes then put back in.
38:40 Last big portage coming up the trail is on the right but it is brushy and overgrown with downed trees.

Nice vid! Congrats on the run. Not many people get to run this creek, it goes from terrifying to boney in a week or two and then the added complication of snow on the Magruder - I'd guess less than 50 people a year get on it.
I ran it twice - once in 2000 and on once in 2002. The first trip it was too low, definitely lower than in your vid and the next trip it was on the high side of comfortable, maybe a couple more hundred CFS than on this run. We estimated our first trip down was around 700 CFS and the second was 1100ish. Never got a chance to get back for the Goldilocks run.

Thanks. Yeah I thought up top we could have used a little more water, but in the bottom the flow seemed good. Yeah we had to do the longer hike because of snow. Would be nice to do it again sometime.

OK - A couple of things - Was this the entire 35 mile run edited? And is this correct- a 4-5 mile shuttle each way? That seems too much. Does that include your hike in? Those wood piles always seemed to be right at the start of some pretty hefty sections . It's too bad the pine beetle devastated the trees - so much more wood will come down more or less at the same time in the near future, clogging the river. You probably ran it at a good time.

Yes I should video of the entire 35 mile run but did edit out some parts between the 2 videos. Yes the shuttle is 4 to 5 hours each way. That does not include the hike in that is just pure driving time. Yeah I imagine between the fires and beetles the river will become clogged with wood.
