I live in the Southern Illinois area, so we had TWO at full totality. 2017 and 2024 Wild .

I am not sure why (perhaps the Earth was closer to the sun in 2017) but the 2024 eclipse totality was different in that it was much darker in 2024 and I could look directly at the sun without my glasses in 2024 and see a black sun FULLY covered unlike in 2017 where a sliver of super bright light still made it around the edges. I was in southeast Tennessee in 2017 and Metropolis Illinois in 2024. In 2024 for Tennesseans totality hit the spot of the nearest legal bud dispensary for the real stuff not the fake lookalike stores like in TN or KY.

I saw it in Cleveland. Absolutely mind blowing. And to get almost 4 minutes. I’ll never experience anything like that ever again.

Might have not been in the path of totality the first time

2024 eclipse was darker than 2017 because the path was a lot wider so if you were anywhere near the centerline, the area outside the shadow was farther away. This is because the moon was closer to perigee, and this is why totality lasted much longer (around 4 minutes vs 2-1/2). The one in Spain/Egypt in 2027 will be even longer/darker (6 or 7 minutes at the centerline). The one in the US in 2045 will be almost as good (I think around 6 minutes of totality).
