BRZ Gets Thrashed - Is The Hype Real?

- For years everyone has said that the BRZ / FRS / 86 is an incredible car - but is it? Even though some argue they are underpowered, fans of the platform say that it's all about 'spirited' driving, 'purity' and track days. But is this really true? We've decided to find out by giving our BRZ and good thrashing around Sydney Motorsport Park, and the results were surprising!

I loved my engine heart shirt but it shrunk in the wash. I need to order my next one a size larger.
I've got a tune I built, that I run on mine. Removes the torque dip, and also removes the risk of you chewing up your HP injector seals which earlier stock ROMs do. Free of charge for you guys :P
i have frs and let me tell you some good breaks nothing crazy tune and headers and you will find a huge difference on track! i love car its too much fun!
@@Wildmarshmellow Headers aren't super necessary to get rid of the 'torque hole'. Can be done with a tune alone. It's all in the cam timing.
@@ranga2050 i have done it try'd both and headers made huge difference stock ones have a cat in them
6:56 He said it! Marty is here in his "STI" :)
First time i heard him admit its an STI XD
I think they have both got a point on camera for admitting to what to call it.
you can see him following him for the whole beginning of the video (havent watched more than a few m inutes so far)
In the beginning I was focusing on a blue WRX in the rear view mirror...strangely not passing...which was weird, or normal, depending who you ask.
I took it as a joke. Kind of how people will exaggerate their own accomplishments, if he can say he caught/passed an STI it sounds better than WRX. So he's like making fun of himself for being proud of keeping up with the WRX by calling it an STI.
"I don't like getting passed by an MX-5. I don't like it all!" - words have been spoken by many men who have been passed by MX-5's.
It's not often we get to just gap someone in our mx5's, but when it does happen, it's a feeling like no other
I got a hunch that most people would feel the same when getting passed by a honda civic.
You can fit a ticked out turbo 4 cylinder in a Civic, you can fit a turbo charged V6 or NA V8 in a MX-5 (Then do chassis strengthening and suspension geometry modifications). They are just chassis configurations to me, never see the point to equate brand and model to performance levels. Yeah, I know there are limits, etc etc.
Ah, when you're out in your tractor and a MX5 passes you.. Hate that.
I would say the worst is getting passed by a Prius... but lets face it.. that's never going to happen
14:46 turns off electronic aids. 14.47 almost bins it . Beautiful.
He didn't match the gear haha
This was literally my experience in my Evo X at the RAC track in WA. Turned off the individual wheel braking which stops the car from rotating and end of the next main straight I immediately lost spinning 180 off into the sand. It's amazing how much it helps and you can barely tell it's doing so in the dry (in the wet it's a lot more noticable). In both cases I had the "traction control" off which limits throttle - so no throttle limiting - just disabling the ABS based stability control or not which in the Evo X you do by holding down the traction control button for 3 seconds (single press disables the Traction Throttle Limiting).
thats what happens when you dont revmatch, in my bmw if i come to a roundabout and shift from 3rd to 2nd ithout a revmatch it kicks out immediately, when I revmatch it carries on straight
ESC sport isn't full off, it opens up the nannies to allow more slip angle before cutting in.
There is an ESC/TC off button next to that which he never touched. If Moog did the pedal dance, he'd loose all nannies, no T/C, Stability, ABS and EBS[Electronic brake distribution]
Haha Moog called it an STI.
Kevin Ferguson XD

@@jbu89gb I meant Marty's machine, Moogs always calling it a WRX haha
@@tworodsdownunder he even called it an STI in a previous episode of MCM1 channel, second part of putting it together :D
They should call Marty's car the blue waffle. Because it's blue... And an sti
When that miata passed, I can see Moog calculating if a header and tune is in the monthly budget XD
In this episode of Mighty Car Mods, Moog demonstrates what it's like to be a mobile chicane for faster cars. 😁👍
🤣
This is what MCM needs more of. The actual joy of driving! Great!
I absolutely agree. I was lucky enough to attend the MCM Nationals at Eastern Creek and it was a blast to drive around with their cars in the mix.
Mcm has got boring
Moog is like the one B class car in an A class race on Forza, having fun in the corners but not passing anytime soon
Dude, YES
Like the guy who always picks the anti armor class just because he prefers to blow everyone up, but hes not getting massive kill streaks
Love doing that but thrashing the A classes also
Moog's face when trying to keep up with the MX5: NEEEEEED MOOAAAAR POWERRRRR.
he was still on traction control, and you don't know what that mx5 has
Moog getting the old red mist when the mx5 passed him under brakes, instantly got way more aggressive behind the wheel haha
When the MX5 passed you and the camera showed your face you were definitely visibly mad. No hiding your emotions after lol.
"No problem keeping up with him" Turns on sport mode. Starts sliding the back end. Marty drives away.
Because sport mode rarely ever has anything to do with performance. Its almost always about giving the driver the kind of experience they expect from a performance car.
While in the modern car world you don't need a rough ride and barking exhaust to be quick around a track.
@@DrewLSsix on toyota, it uncap the ecu to perform at least 30% more, but it does need to be tuned and supercharged to push 500hp

Absolutely enjoyable to watch Moog have that much fun. You just seemed so happy and in your element. Great video and hope to see some more, possibly a track day in the HondaMini?
Glad to hear you guys are aware about the header/tune situation! I drove one of these as a race car with only headers/exhaust, a tune, and new tires with a suspension. It was an absolute monster around a track without that torque dip and 35~ more RWHP. I even have a video of me passing a twin-turbo lambo in it. I hope you guys give it the little extra push it needs and take it back out! It's also interesting that the torque dip is intentional to keep fuel economy and street drivability for their target market, which was 40+ businessmen. While I think it's still a silly decision, it effectively means that the car is a blank slate. It is one of the most capable chassis to come out in a very, very long time. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with for the next step in this car's journey!
Do you have an E-85 tune on it?

I love how after the mx-5 was a prick moog really smashed the brz to keep up haha.
It was a boat too, that he absolutely could not keep up with. BRZ is not the track day legend ideal.
@@abattlescar I don't think anyone thinks it's a track day "legend", but it's fun and it has cheap tire and brake costs which is important since fast cars cost ridiculous amounts of money to put on a track.
@@abattlescar With proper track prep that most track cars should have (200tw or lower tires, brake pads and fluid, an oil cooler, and good cornering suspension not what moog has) they are damn fast and fun. I have one and I was shitting on much faster cars' times with all of that prep except my kw clubsports I just put on, now with them and a track alignment the car corners stupid fast!
@no no he didn't need to overtake that close to his traction limit on the inside of a corner, one slip up could total both cars. Its a track day not a race, but Im also not sure why they arent doing point bys to minimize that risk.

Random BRZ facts from a 2017 brz owner:
-The BRZ stock tires are the same ones that are put on the prius "Michilin Primacy"
-The 2017 brz has a updated traction control. They call it "track mode". The way it interferes isn't as sudden and feels a lot smoother and natural vs the VSC off.
You can also swap the VDC control module of a 2017+ car in a 2012-2016 and have the updated traction control. All it takes is a connector pin swap on the 2012 to 2014, plug and play on 2015+

The look on Moogs face when the hairdresser in the mx5 pulls away is priceless.
When that white Miata passed, I started to grip my phone so hard, and man did my heart start pumping. Then you got serious and started working the steering wheel, loved it!
No one likes getting passed by a Miata - that’s why everyone hates them, bc they are so good. 😉
I have had 3 Miatas, and owned a BRZ. The BRZ was great. Sport mode on or all nannies off is the way to go. The issue though is no low end torque. It’s much slower than it looks. Passing cars on a 1 lane each direction road wasn’t easy - the other car gets upset you are passing them (while they are on their cell phone doing 10 under the speed limit), and they hit the gas. Then you are side by side. Just not enough power when you really need it - but plenty of power 95% of the time.
Moog - that shift light is programmable. You can set it for the rpm you want it to come on. Nothing to do with the car itself warning you - the previous owner just chose that rpm.
The manual shifter in that car is so good. Awesome feel. The seats are great. The low seating position and low COG just help the car corner so nicely. What’s even better is the “center point” of rotation of the car feels like it’s right in front of your body (or at your body if you have the seat more forward), so the car rotates around you. So amazing - no way to describe how much a part of the car you feel driving one at the limits.
Hoping the next gen doesn’t lose that charm but gets more power to match its abilities!
He didn't like getting passed by the Miata because the driver dangerously overtook on the inside line because he thought he was racing in F1. Miatas are great, but the driver of that white one was a dick.
Keon R. Not necessarily dangerous, only dangerous if moog didn’t act accordingly. I’d say it’s more bullying and lack of courtesy for other drivers’ fun
@Bob Dole WRX? Might want to do some research. There are so many reasons to pick up an MX-5/BRZ/86 instead. RWD coupe is just the way to go if you enjoy driving.
Bob Dole - I sold my BRZ after 4 years. I have an STi hatch now. I had a WRX wagon for 14 years, 4 of which were alongside the BRZ.
My STi has the JDM Spec C suspension and bushings. Handles great, enough power to keep me happy and out of trouble, and amazing in all weather. Still, when you got in a BRZ, it felt like putting on a suit. The car was an extension of you. The STi is better in every way except that connection.
Marco V - I have an S197 Mustang GT as a second car. It’s fun but big and heavy and spins the tires too easily. Bumps upset the rear and it tries to pass the front. Would rather have my BRZ back many times - EXCEPT when dealing with some traffic around LA where people don’t let you over, etc, and you have to do a quick 60-90mph pull in a small window to escape your “box”. The BRZ couldn’t do those.
But my STi handles slightly better than my Mustang. Both modified for handling. They’re close - but feel completely different.
Honestly, had Subaru given the BRZ the turbo engine from the WRX, it would have been amazing.
6:58 finally called it an STI
That’s only because Marty. Wasn’t in the car with him. LOL 😂

Yes. 100% of people who say 86s are slow peices of shit are only hard parkers and never done any track time. Or maybe they have done track time and realise why the fuck youd buy that car. And its the hard parkers who think their 86s are qUiCK ThRouGh tHe CorNeRs. An mx5 or s2k is quicker through the corners and puts up better times 😂
Let alone something with actual power, you still have to set an 86 up for track work. Why not buy a real car and, get this, set it up for track work... mind blown right?
Correct. If you enjoy it as it is then great. I enjoyed mine NA for several years before putting in an SC. I would only say from personal experience though, that for me putting in an SC really improved my enjoyment of the car. In a big way! 😁 I don't do track, it's my daily drive and I just love it with the SC. Easy to do and for me well worth the money. That and the upgraded exhaust.... oh... and those truly terrible tail lights. They were the first to go! 😁
If i remember the manufacturer launch hype for the car correctly. The Prius tyres were used specifically for their low grip. The low power-even lower grip combo allowed drivers to push the car on the roads, have a bit of tail happy action without going too criminally fast. Caterham did exactly the same with their 600cc suzuki engined car. I dont think it was ever designed as a track warrior, more a budget drifter.

Moog. Push & hold the left hand traction button for about 5 seconds.
That will 'mostly' turn off the VSC & traction control
holding the traction button (not the flag button) until the dash lights up is definitely all aids off. can confirm doing full drift sessions without doing the silly dance.
@@autohans540 it's easy and pretty usable, but if you're going to spend a lot of time sideways like on a skidpan you definitely need to do the pedal dance. Just holding the TC buttons, it will turn off most of the aids but after a while you'll notice ABS behaving weirdly and braking some of your wheels while you try mess around. Pedal dance is the way and easy once you've done it a few times
@@matthewvanzyl6158 Long hold press of button (even though not fully off like with pedal dance) is still way better than using sport mode on track. Sport mode interferes too much when it doesn't need to on sticky tires. If you are going to track one of these, at minimum do full hold after starting the car before going out of paddock/pits (since can't be done at speed unlike sport mode). Full hold still has EBD active...if you want that off go all the way and do pedal dance.
