    1. The word "Soccer" actually originated in the United Kingdom. Association Football was shortened to "soccса" (derived from the middle of the word association). This turned into the word "soccer" that is still used in the US, Canada, and Australia.
    2. The word 'guy',of course, means a man, or a person. "That guy over there." "Hi, guys. How is everyone?" But originally, it wasn't a word, but a name. And in particular, this guy's name: Guy Fawkes. One of the conspirators to blow up Houses of Parliament in 1605. Guy became the person most associated with the Gunpowder Plot. Ever since then, 5 November has been celebrated as Guy Fawkes Night, though you often hear Bonfire Night, with bonfires and fireworks.
    3. Quarantine comes from the French "qarante" for 40. Whenever a ship arriving in port was suspected of being infected it had to forego contact with the shore for a period of about 40 days.
    4. Hazard comes from the Arabic "al zahr" which means "the dice". The term came to be associated with dice during the Crusades and eventually took on a negative connotation because games of dice were associated with gambling.
    5. Disaster comes from the Greek "dis" meaning bad, and "aster", meaning star. The ancient Greeks used to blame calamities on unfavorable planetary positions.
    6. Muscle comes from a Latin root meaning "little mouse". Apparently people used to think muscles looked like little mice under their skin.
    7. War comes from a Germanic root that meant "to confuse".
    8. Lunatic is derived from the Latin word "luna" meaning "moon". It originated from the belief that insanity is caused by changes in the moon.
    9. Curfew comes from a combination of two French words - "couvrir" and "feu". Literally this means to "cover fire"
    10. Ape: Large primate species lacking a tail, very often with high levels of intelligence. It includes chimpanzees/bonobos, gorillas, etc.
From Old English apa (fem. ape) "an ape, a monkey," from Proto-Germanic apan (source also of Dutch aap, German affe), probably a borrowed word, perhaps from Celtic (compare Old Irish apa, Welsh epa) or Slavic (compare Old Bohemian op, Slovak opitza). Non-human apes have never been present in Europe, so the whole group is likely ultimately from an Eastern or non- Indo-European language.
