How you dey (How are you)
A - I dey Kampe (I am fine)
How body (How are you)
A - Body dey inside cloth (I am fine)!
Yes! I love this! My family is Jamaican and when I here Nigerians speak I feel like that is where we come from. That is original patois. And I admit Funke looks very much like my cousin so feel an affinity to her. Nigeria is definitely on my bucket list. I just know I come from there.
Thank you for sharing Steven. 😊🙏🏾
Well talking about using the word chop this is a good one: "Oga u sabi chop life" meaning you know how to enjoi life! Abi?
@@francescalombardo8839 in Jamaica we say chop but it means “to scam” 😂
I recently discovered I’m partly Nigerian through 23andMe. :)
Jamaica's are just displaced Africans my sister. We accept you with open arms 😢-Sage Bidnisss
I used some of these on my Nigerian colleagues and it blew their mind!
Nigeria pidgin : I don carry belle, meaning : I'm pregnant 😂
I'm from Zim and we also use "How far" as an informal greeting thats so cool I always thought it was just us
My Nigerian brother and sisters, PLEASE DROP BELOW other pidgin phrases you believe would be useful for those traveling to lagos! ❤️
Love this video, I’m not Nigerian, I’m Colombian (big difference I know) but I live in London and know a lot of Nigerian people who use this, and although they don’t use it with me I thought I’d watch a video and educate myself on it out of curiosity… this is so informative, thank you
Thank you, Funke. These are not only Lagos or Nigerian phrases. These encompass the West African Pidgin. Of course, Naija being the 10,000-pound Gorilla influences the language enormously. Nice job.
One of my greatest frustrations with the recent crop of Nigerian movies is the deliberate avoidance of these elegant pidgin phrases that give West African English a specific character and beauty. That's a shame.
Greetings from Cameroon.
One phrase we U dey use for Yankee here na ' dem no born u well'
Also its good to emphasize that Naija pidgin keeps growing, as we begin to infuse some of our common Naija languages.
I wan chop....also means I wanna enjoy, prosper, do well...(chop money) just depends on the situation/ context.
Go slow...can be used like indirectly telling someone they're moving too fast...could be positive...like go slow, wait for me oooo
I'm planning a trip to Lagos next year. My first time out of the country USA and I'm choosing Lagos more like Lagos chose me to come home I found out through Ancestry I'm 75 percent Nigerian so why not take my spirit home
Yes that’s wonderful. I met my fiancé in Nigeria just from FaceTime of almost 2 years I’m going to finally go to him In March. I can’t wait I miss him all the time. I’m in USA also it will be my first time out of the country, well besides Canada but I don’t think that counts. When you do go enjoy yourself it’s nice to find out who you really are I did the same thing.
I forgot to tell you that I am Lady from California♥️😊👍🏽
Horrible decision
Am from indonesia, but am in love with ur country..
I hope i can visit nigeria so on
Yes you can
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Sassy! This was very informative ☺️
Love this from Zim
My girlfriend speaks pigin all the times and idk understand her so thank you for letting me know this 🙏🏽
That was so enjoyable to listen to and the comments are excellent. 👍
I’ve been watching a lot of Nigerian fan football reactions and this helps me get a little bit better understanding, thank you!
My favorite Nigerian Pidgin phrases are , “Where you dey go” and “Wetin dey happen”.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What’s means dis?
Robbin Smith “Where are u going ?”and “What happened”
@@robbinsmith1501 "Where are you going?" and "what's happening?"
Ppl from Western Jamaica, says, "weh yuh deh guh?"( where r u going?)
Thankyou, I love to learn how speak the pidgin.
It is so good 👍
Ehen is my favorite Nigerian 🇳🇬 pidgin slang that can mean anything from “as I was saying” 0:15 , to “no wonder”, to “continue” 😂🤣 ( extremely versatile) depending on the context. In addition Nigerian Pidgin is unique due to the mixture of tribal Nigerian languages with pidgin, Nigerian Pidgin is TOO SWEET ❤️☺️🔥.
Hey Sassy. It’s the consistent for me. It feels refreshing watching a new vlog from you
Thank you so much. Its tough being consistent so I really appreciate this. Let me know is there is a topic you want me to touch on.
Thank you, very informative! Are there any more videos about Pidgin English on your channel?
Thank you for sharing I am Haitian-Bahamian 🇭🇹🇧🇸 live in USA. I just started watching Nigerian movies and I hear those phases all the time. Now I'm more understanding when I hear them again. One phase and only I got right and love to use is "ABEG". I thought "I wan chop" meant I want to cut 😂 Also, what does "Oga" means?
So beautiful
Na wa o
I didn’t know I usually use this phrase a lot until my son born in UK used it to talk to his sibling 😆
hahaha that must have been surprising 😆 😆 😆
Please tell me more things to let me know you are teaching very well I love it
I love this. I'm gonna surprise my Nigerian neighbors in Italy by using some phrases.
1) how far
a day
2) i wan chop
3) ee too cost a beg
4) abi?
5) abeg
6) go slow hold me as i dey come
7) wahala dey o - there is a problem
no wahala - no problem
thanks
Sassy, these are a few I know:
You dey craze?= are you mad?
Sir, I no loss o = I'm still here. No leave, no transfer.
Our mumu don do = We are tired of getting cheated. Enough is enough.
Na true talk be dat = That is the truth.
Kata kata = chaos
Love these phrases! That first one ooo 😩😩😩 so popular
@@SassyFunke most definitely the 1st one 😂😂😂😂
With "I wan chop" I get the image of like "I want to chop something (vegetables, meat)" like cooking I guess.

I really love the African language especially Lagos, I love to hear MC Reality speaks
What is "the African language"?
In the US when I was younger, it wasn't uncommon to hear teeth called "choppers".
Something like "He hit him right in the choppers". I haven't heard it in a long time though.
I love your accent. How have you come up with it?
I Wan Chop = I Want To Make Money 🤑

You did not say...
Na wa o,
Na so,
Shebi,
Wetin dey shele?
Happily Nigerian 🇳🇬😁
I'm curious, can I wan chop mean I want to cook too??
Hi late and just watching your video! Thank you for the lesson. In AAVE (African American Vernacular English) we use "Chop" to say we had a conversation or catched up with someone. Ex, I seen Marcus when I was out and we chopped it up for a bit. It was good to see him.
ABEG = I beg, = please
I want shop, I want to get something from shop
How far na? Clap for yourselves na..
Thank you! Learning pidgin because my Urhobo wife keeps slipping into pidgin, and I don't want to get lost!
My man is dan, and i beg me self dey also switch hahahah, until i realize 😂
Asslam u Alikum wrwb
I am a student of linguistics😢
I am unable to find a channel by where i can take better understanding about Nigerian English.
Can you help??
How about na so
I get a lot off support from 4 lady's from Nigeria they are in England for up to 5 year's from University. I have a mild learning disability so I pay for support. I think it's amazing for me to get support here in Newcastle Upon Tyne England from lady's from Nigeria. They all have different fuse on Nigeria. I don't know if I would be safe on my own in Lagos Nigeria. I am 61 year's old with a disability. 😊
I need a letter of invitation so I can visit Nigeria.Csn anyone help me please?
I dont date no pidgins drizzle drizzle - can you explain it
What is the meaning of 'odogwu'?
I wonder if I want chop is derived from “chomp” to chew.
Now i wan a chop, egusi amala😂
Funke how far nah?
Chop = Make, take, gained/gain, eat etc.
In America we say chop it up and that means to talk
hello, can you write or translate to English?
Funke
and what does Na mean
I dey chop money! 😂😂😂😂
Is pidgin similar to Yoruba or they are completely different languages?
Heey
What does "just dey embarras me O" mean and " be like say na big thing"
Let me give this a shot:
① just dey embarass me oo. = continue embarrassing me / continue making a fool of me.
This will usually be heard during a conversation between two people. You could hear some slight modifications like:
- see how you dey embarass me = look at the way you are mocking me
- make you no dey embarass me like that = do not embarass me in that manner.
② be like say na big thing = it is as if it is something big/important.
- "be like say" usually translates to "it is as if" / "it looks like" / "it appears to be" / "it seems as if".
- "na big thing" can mean "it is important" / "it is huge"
So you may see a large crowd gathering somewhere and someone may say:
"Be like say na big thing dey happen" = seems as if a large event is going on
Hope that helps.
What does ewu mean??
i sabi , no yawa 😂😂😂
I you are so beautiful but off course I understand you are happely married lol. I have just watched your video. Brilliant 😂🤣😊👍. Dobspato Newcastle Upon Tyne England
Hi, How can I say "welcome" ?
Just say that.
What jaffa mean
BOBO U TOO FINE. ..SENDING MY SHOUT OUTS IN ZIMBABWE
Meaning of how for do
What can be done?
Say a friend visits you and finds your living conditions have deteriorated, the conversation may go like this:
Ⓐ Omo, wetin happen here? = My friend what has happened here (or happened to you)?
Ⓑ How for do? Na so I see am oo. = What can be done (about it)? That is what I have been handed (in life).
Does chop not refer to chopping food? Rather than chopsticks? I wouldn't imagine many people in Africa using chopsticks in the past.
I wan chop I wanna make maoney
I want to eat not I want to make money
Chop my money: take away from the money I have. I feel like chop means to take away from something
🌟💚
I used to struggle with how far as a english lady i was confused at was this hello or how are you lol
Hope you are now comfortable with it 😍
Very much so
My fav is Go do am haha
Hello everyone im asking this in the most respectful minded way. I need some support and reassurance please. I’m white British and unfortunately I struggle with poor mental health. Many of the mental health staff I have worked with in the past have been I think Nigerian and have extremely strong accents that I struggle to think they are able to speak English well and that they can not understand me as I try to explain my difficulties in my appointments but they must have English to a good enough level to have the jobs they do. I’m getting very upset and stressed because of an appointment I have soon with a mental health nurse who is very very very strong Nigerian or Zimbabwean I don’t know but if it’s the person I think it is she was clearly struggling to speak a clear sentence to me and yet expected me to understand and respond in a clear way too. Just this issue makes me stressed about the appointment already. So my question is can those who come as nurses truly speak English or are they faking or being lazy in talking ‘properly’ to me because I have mental health problems? What is the truth here?? I can not take anyone else to the appointment with me. Please be kind and understanding. I’m trying to ask respectfully. Thank you in advance.
two words, in this video, hmmm
What does dey mean? And how to respond to how far? Tysm
I dey- I am fine
dey = to be
is this sentence correct "dey be fine"
This is not pidgin o, this is ginpid😂
no shaking = no problem
Yes I love this phrase 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
is there a simple explanation to understand dey??
In general:
dey = the verb "to be" (are am, are, is, was)
① How you dey? = How are you?
② I dey fine = I am fine
③ Body dey cloth = I am fine. (My body is still clothed)
④ Where you dey now? = Where are you presently.
⑤ You dey craze/mad? = Are you crazy?
However, note that "th" is pronounced as "d" so "they" will become "dey":
① If dey catch you, dey go kill you oo. = If they get a hold of you they will beat the hell out of you.
② No mind dem., na so dey be. = Don"t mind them (pay them no attention), that is how they are.
③ Na so dem dey. = That is how them is. [here dey = is/be].
Compare this with: Na so dey be = That is how they are. (That is how they be)
④ Dey dey here oo. (They are here.) = Dey don come (They have come).
After awhile you get to understand when dey is used as "they" or "to be"
This is like us African American ebonics/slang language we creates a lot of it is just shorten English. We blacks are the same everywhere lol.
“We blacks” is crazy
We just have a Americanized patois/pidgin… Gullah geechee
"We blacks" and "ebonics"???
As she says pidgin is a way for us from Nigeria with over 500+ different languages who were colonized by varied European countries, we use pidgin to communicate easily with each other... thanks
No wam means no problems
Lol@ "Twitter "
😊😊😊😊😄
"Who born you" meaning please.
Who do you think you are? (Usually said with negative connotations).
Chop Money😂
