The 50 Peso fee is if you want to shoot video, but the only time I was asked to pay it, was in Teotihuacan when I had a flip screen video camera. I went to all the ruins in the Yucatan with my Cannon, and no one said anything.
I stayed in Merida and booked a tour that was supposed to visit Izamal, Chichen Itza, the cenote you went to and Valladolid. We ended up with another mother and daughter and they basically took over the tour. They wasted an hour shopping then two whole hours getting a massage from a Mayan healer. We were supposed to visit the cenote YOU went to, but instead we were sent to the one in village while they were getting a massage. I also didn't get in the water, because I saw the water from the top and it was so dirty. Long story short, we gave the guide and earful and he later up ended up leaving the other party at the buffet and taking us to Chichen Itza, so we would have an extra hour. While I do agree with you that having a guide is insightful, I was actually happy that we got to see it without a guide, because we got to see the WHOLE site instead of just the north section. We felt a bit rushed, because it was 2 hours before closing time, but it also meant it wasn't as crowded, especially the other section. It looks like you weren't taken to the other section where the observatory is, which is a shame, as that was my favorite section of the ruins, as the architecture is different and it's not as crowded or commercialized, so it felt more authentic. My uncle went back in the 90s, and said if he ever goes back, it will be without a guide. I definitely think you should go back without a guide, and next time you should definitely visit Uxmal, which I thought were nicer and more authentic than Chichen Itza.
It's probably good that you didn't swim in the cenote, as I've read many stories about people getting sick from cenotes, mainly around Tulum, although I swam in Cenote Suytun and was sick for 3 weeks with respiratory issues and I also destroyed my feet.
As for your comments at the beginning, Chicanos always tell me that too. They go visit their families in cartel country and always say, "If you aren't looking for trouble, you won't find it", but I don't believe that, and I'm personally not taking any chances. I did go to Tulum, but only briefly with a tour and our driver wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. I really think it's a matter of luck, and you're lucky you weren't in the wrong place at the wrong time. I preferred to stay in Yucatan anyways, as I prefer historic and more authentic towns. The only thing I could've done differently is stayed in Progresso instead of Merida. If you ever go back, I recommend staying in Progresso and exploring western Yucatan. Very beautiful ruins, colonial towns and nature.
I apologize for the long essay, and I'm sorry if I am annoying, but I always enjoy sharing my own tips and experiences from a place. Happy travels.

What you say not to bother bring in at the start. Something kept banging each time you said it in the background. I tried to listen a couple of times.
