Bellissimo e interessante, grazie! Umberto I, the founder of House Savoy, was called the White-Handed, maybe as a metaphor for his nobility and honesty, maybe because he was indeed very pale... in any case such nicknames are very "gameofthronesy" and I love them :P

1:49 Emmanuel Philibert’s mother was Princess Beatrice of Portugal who was a daughter of King Manuel I of Portugal. This makes Royal House of Italy connected to Royal House of Portugal. Other fact, Portuguese King Sancho I’s mother Matilda was a daughter of Count Amadeus III of Savoy.

The paintings of the rulers up to the 16th century aren't contemporary, the art of painting wasn't used for rulers in the middle ages, but only for divine figures. Only after the Renaissance gave increased importance to man, did they start painting rulers, and by the 16th century they had forgot what armour looked like in the 11th century.

There was the Royal March and the Hymn of Imperial Italy. But before it, nothing, because the concept of Italy as a Unitary State did not exist, but only as a geographical and social expression, there were certainly hymns for the various micro-states, duchies, Republic and kingdoms of that time(Genoa and the Papacy).

The Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) is a crowned republic, the people ousted Umberto II not bcoz he is tyrant but bcoz he let Mussolini push Italy into WW2, a war in which their 1st thought "hey we're on the winning side thanks to Germany" then suddenly "US forces are landing in Sicily." Italy's army, economy, & industry is nothing compared to France & UK, they can't beat Greece or UK Egypt, all of the war effort were done by the Germans. If Mussolini didn't join WW2, the Savoy monarchy would survive & he will look like Portugal Salazar or Spain Franco (return to democracy in 1970s). Another idea is that if Umberto II's father who is the king that time dismissed Mussolini earlier & before 1943, the Savoy monarchy would obviously survive. Yes the PM haves the executive powers & the king is a figurehead but the king failed in one role which is "check & balance," he should not let Italy turn into a Fascis t autocracy in the 1st place if he love his people.

@@olidojosephd.9054 this isn’t exactly what happened Italy could compete with france and the Uk ( not the USA obviously) but it didn’t because Mussolini effectively maked our military industry chain of command and military ineffective and impractical making our defeat inevitable combined with his incompetence. The King couldn’t kick Mussolini out because that would have meant civilwar which still happened but in the middle of ww2 thanks to the Germans capturing our army and effectively backstabbing us ( but this isn’t what the American say apparently we captured our own army or what?) after the fascists and Germans installed a puppet government in the north the monarchy tried to not male the country completely collapse collaborating with the Allies the Communist partisans and the reppublicans ( but both this last two were extremely fragmented and hard to talk with). The Germans eventually surrendered and the Americans financing republican propaganda and the high hate towards the king figure that could have protected Rome meant the monarchy lost by a margin of 7%. Which us incredible considering what the Usa and the Communists had to do. He then left without contesting the referendum so that a second civil-war won’t erupt.
Ps: this is also an oversimplification but it’s more accurate than the other comment presented. I don’t have all the day si I won’t write all of post ww1 Italian history fascist and post ww2 history just to explain to the very few people that will read this.
