choreography isn't nearly as good as Lacotte's but Ilyushkina looks good doing ANYTHING. I remember seeing her in school and thinking "this is going to be the next ballerina of the century". She was in the corps of Sleeping Beauty (with Shakirova and Lukina as the graduating stars of the year----and STILL stood out!) so good to see her getting appreciation!

Petipa's original choreography really shocked me when I first saw this variation danced by Tereshkina...it was clear I was seeing something extraordinary from another era brought to life. It was originally called the "Pas de sabre", and featured a demi-caractère element where the Princess Aspicia dances with a sabre (or in this case, a dagger) and half-way through the variation she throws it at the King of Nubia's feet to express her anger at having to marry him. The great ballerinas of old shone brightly in this variation - one can easily imagine the great Virginia Zucchi or Mathilde Kschessinskaya dancing this solo.

Maria Ilyushkina is a beautiful dancer; I think she has a strong upper body and her arm movements are excellent ❤ ❤ ❤ 😊. She deserves to be a principal dancer, too, in my honest opinion.
