It's an odd one (not the LP) - I grew up as an 18 y.o. on their EPs and Nowhere. Going Blank Again was quite a departure when you had been hit by the house of guitars that was Ride 1990-92 and then there was a lulll ... which road would they take? Twisterella or Kaleidoscope? Theyve been quoted as saying they were at a crossroads and feel they took the wrong tuen on this album but you can't blame them. By then the whole UK house of guitar MBV noise had moved on. Grunge had come and gone, (the awful) Britpop (Titpop) was on its way in and they prob calculated (or the label did) that a retuen to their original unique sound wasn't viable. I dunno. I'm hypothisising in West Cornwall at 01:17! But their best stuff, for me, is the proper guitar stuff. Beautiful melodies as this song might have, their unique burst of sound in 1990 shook the whole of the UK and made us wake from our post-Smiths snooze.
Blackbird flying in the sky Please don't look me in the eye You are very very lucky It's never easy to find me The winter's coming now you've grown The cold will numb you to the bone It cuts you through so that you know In pain the minutes go so slow Your soul and mine will carry on When this transparent world is gone There's nothing strange in what I say It's always meant to be this way Power streams where love is strong Energy converting, never gone There's never going to be an end A million atoms can't pretend Until the cold ground swallows me Me and Ide, go running free Then we'll change, not disappear All channels receiving loud and clear Birdman think he owns the sky But he can't look me in the eye I walk on gilded mirror blades I walk on razors feel no pain In the heat of summertime Rolling thunder is my sign I understand what's going on I'm gonna fly right to the sun
I was 13 when i first heard this song back in '94. This song was the very first influence on me to learn how to play guitar and made me love rock music, it's very special to me👍
i just wonder about all those awesome unknown RIDE tunes that are lost to us forever while andy was playing four strings in oasis ............................
Released 30 years ago, 18th April 1994. Although I’ve always had a soft spot for this, the 1993 sessions version was the direction they should have taken.
Great great tune and very underrated, though abit overlong (prefer the single version with album version intro). My top ten Ride tunes: 1). Close My Eyes, 2). OX4, 3). Birdman, 4). Seagull, 5). Chrome Waves, 6). Drive Blind, 7). Unfamiliar, 8). Sunshine/Nowhere to Run, 9). Charm Assault, 10). 1000 miles ..(the next-10: Ride the Wind, From Time to Time, Today, Nowhere, Natural Grace, Lannoy Point, Sennen, The Dawn Patrol, All I Can See, Chelsea Girl.)
This album remains criminally underrated.
Maybe the band didn't like it as much given the bad blood going on and how it did worse commercially, but it's still a kick-ass album.
Criminally underrated band period!
It's my favourite after nowhere, a really beautiful vibe through the whole album.
Didn’t they refer to it as ‘carnival of shite’?

Blackbird flying in the sky
Please don't look me in the eye
You are very very lucky
It's never easy to find me
The winter's coming now you've grown
The cold will numb you to the bone
It cuts you through so that you know
In pain the minutes go so slow
Your soul and mine will carry on
When this transparent world is gone
There's nothing strange in what I say
It's always meant to be this way
Power streams where love is strong
Energy converting, never gone
There's never going to be an end
A million atoms can't pretend
Until the cold ground swallows me
Me and Ide, go running free
Then we'll change, not disappear
All channels receiving loud and clear
Birdman think he owns the sky
But he can't look me in the eye
I walk on gilded mirror blades
I walk on razors feel no pain
In the heat of summertime
Rolling thunder is my sign
I understand what's going on
I'm gonna fly right to the sun

I love this kind of comment.
At some point they'll be calling it the lost 90s album, like the Zombies and Love in the 60s. It's so great, Ride were unbelievable.
That intro is killer.
Four years later... STILL underrated. Just fucking genius.
very cool song. love all the textures in it.
Great album, THIS SONG is AMAZING, vocals. PERFECT!!!

I think Andy joined Oasis for financial gain, I don't blame him gotta keep that money rolling in.

Everytime I search this song, the first result is always that rapper birdman.

A press (NME?) review of this track when it came out described it as the best evocation of autism the reviewer had ever heard..
