Seriously, it's unfair to be DEAF? Whoever complains about that should go blow out their eardrums I never knew this guy had this story...very inspiring
I'm guessing you've never played under real pressure. $500 a game against someone who's as good as you..? Or in the finals of something massive..? Of course you have. No one on the internet would ever say something with a complete and utter lack of empathy, on both sides. 🤣 For the record, I'm a huge fan of Shanes. I have video of him up on my channel even. But if you don't understand what others are talking about, don't comment on it.
Absolutely one of the classiest and respectful players there is. Never seen him show a temper. SVB will take your soul on the pool table. He doesn't have a disability. He has a DIStinct ABILITY to shred you like paper on a billiards table.
I never knew Shane was deaf, but I always loved watching him play and he's always been one of my favourites. Shane, Efren, Earl, and Bustamante. He's always respectful and kind to his opponents and that's pretty badass. Like he said, if you think being deaf is an advantage then you can put earplugs in your ears and be just like him. A lot of people take hearing for granted. They take a lot of things for granted. I can type but can't talk normally, but I don't let that stop me from doing what I love either.
Man how beautiful is this story??? He used pool to get away from bullies and it made his life that much better! Almost brings a tear to my eyes! GO SVB!!)))
touching story...truly inspiring...those old photos when he was little were really neat...cute kid...now he's an inspiration to so many...not just in the pool world...great player but also seems like a really great person...hope to meet him someday...maybe if I make it to derby city...would like to shoot a few games with him even though I'll get beat it would be an honor for me just to get to play him
yo i love van boening i was so happy watching this video cause shane and efren are my pool heros and yeah shane is my role model because he is a great guy really love the guy
Shane is such a good person, he trully is a joy to be around and watch him play. He is very respectful and he would talk to you and get along like if he knew you from a long times. Im glad he is on our side.
I really respect Mr. Boening. He is not only a great player but also gentle brother. When I asked him to take a photo with me at World Cup of Pool, He gladly responded. He is my role model. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Japan again someday.
As a future cueist from Sabah, Malaysia (who loves billiards since childhood), I'm glad to consider Shane Van Boening as my idol since this year! While I do envy his privileges of growing up in a billiard hall since he was a little boy (because his granddad owns several billiard halls, and that both his grandmom and his mom are professional cueists themselves), I still admire his dedication for the sport, thanks to his family! One more reason of why I totally admire him is that when he comes to play (especially at the Mosconi Cup), the "American pride" is very high (although not as high as when the late Muhammad Ali was still alive) and he's also the only current cueist I can rely on, ever since Efren Reyes stopped playing billiards in 2019! 😎
shane is an amazing pool player and extremely dedicated to the game. i was lucky enough to travel with him to a viking nat tour in Georgia. great guy and very humble.
I look up to Shayne. he inspires me to keep going in this sport. ran my first rack the other day. best player in the world as far as I'm concerned. nice composer.
This guy inspires me man, I’m a 17 year old hard of hearing kid. But watching this guy play knowing he wears hearing aids it’s just crazy man I’m very insecure when it comes to using my hearing aids.
I’ll brag about this story till the day I’m dead. Was at a local place called “main event” in my home town. It’s sort of an arcade/bowling family fun type of place that also happens to have pool tables which I shoot on quite often. I go up to pay for the table as usual and I happen to glance over as Shane fuckin van boening is just casually walking out of the restroom right past me. I thought wow that guy looks like SVB and he walks so close to me that I actually can see his hearing aid. I call out , Shane? And he stops and looks at me and in this moment it’s confirmed I’m face to face with my favorite pool player of all time. I go complete fan boy mode lmao “holy shit your SVB” he just looks at me and smiles and nods his head yes. I tell him I can’t believe he’s standing In front of me right now and that he’s literally my favorite player and how much I have learned from watching his videos and he’s just the coolest nicest dude in the world. He had just recently lost the world 9 ball championship to Ko pin yi and Like a total idiot I brought it up and told him that I was so sorry for his recent defeat in the world 9 ball championship match. Probably the last thing he wanted to be reminded about but he just humbly smiled and thanked me and even allowed me to take a picture wit him. Shane is absolute pure class man.
I think it helps to see why Earl is saying that, hearing snarky comments, laughing at missed shots, scratches when you are putting everything you have is distracting and aggravating. Earl might actually be the opposite, where he is hyper-sensitive to everything the crowd, players on other tables, etc are doing saying and has trouble drowning that out. Basically it's easy to pick out Earl and hate on him. I've never actually heard Earl make a purposeful, disrespectful remark. He just complains and is himself irritated.
That said Earl should see that is a terrible argument to make, to argue it is unfair. At the end of the day Pool is about hand eye coordination, and what not and for him to try and Exclude a hearing impaired person from playing especially one so talented as to be possibly the best player in the world, is terrible. It's one thing to comment on distractions, and focus but for anyone to continue on with it to exclude players that are better then them it's sad, but just what you probably can expect from some pool players. They play the games off the table instead of pool. And I think that gets at SVB, Earl, and everyone and turns decent pool players against one another.
@Justin Bryson I don't Earl really meant it, either. He just has a tendency to blurt out stuff like that. I like Earl, too. Love his story about immediately falling in love with pool when his dad first showed him the game. I had similar reaction the first time I saw a pool table at my neighbor's house when I was a small kid. It's a passion.
@@marshalcraft Shane admitted he plays way better when he turns his hearing aid off, and ever since Earl said that Shane hasn't turned it off . That's much Shane respects Earl.
Great pool player and a great person too!! We can all learn from this humble man. You don't have to be a pool player to respect this guy. He does just happen to be the best pool player in the world right now too!!
Who says that I don't need to become a billiard player to respect Shane Van Boening? The truth is, he actually inspired me to become a billiard player (I love this sport since I was a little boy) and although I come from Malaysia, I still admire him because he's the only current billiard player I can rely on, ever since Efren Reyes stopped playing billiards in 2019!
In "Good Will Hunting" Matt Damon whips out the answer to an impossible problem in a matter of seconds. Asked "How do you do that??" he answers: "I look at it and it just all makes sense to me". That is genius and SVB (as well as Earl) are pool geniuses. Mozarts of the pool table. Now Earl has commented that he gets irritated when he's called a natural talent, because it could imply that he doesn't have to work to be great. SVB and Earl have both developed their God-given talent to become greats in the field of pocket billiards.
Kids learn how to speak and understand language up until about age 7, after that the brain chemistry changes and it's MUCH more difficult to pick up and understand languages. I don't know when Shane started wearing hearing aids but he definitely lost a very large part of this crucial time to learn and understand English. And even after he started wearing his hearing aids he didn't hear well at all so during this time he learned much more slowly than non hearing impaired children. Most if not all the other professional players are constantly talking with each other about the finer aspects of the game while Shane misses out of a large part of those conversations. He became one of the greatest pool players in history almost completely by watching intently those who were better than him and emulating them. The other players who complained when he turned off his hearing aids during matches I do not believe understand the hurdles Shane had to overcome (that they didn't) to get to the level that they play on. If they did they wouldn't have an issue with it. And I find it funny to think that if Shane turns off his hearing aids during a match, who would know ? Do the referees constantly check to see that they are turned on ?
What a class act. Leaving his hearing aids on to make it fair. How could anybody complain about him not wearing hearing aids. Those are some serious cry babies. And since I called the complainers crybabies I guess I'm not such a class act. So be it.
Update: 5 time US open Champ 2 time World Pool Masters Champ (2x in a row 1st person ever) 7 time Turning Stone Classic 4 time Derby City Classic amongst 100+ other titles Greatest Break ever!! Most Humble Pool Player of all time other than Efren Reyes 2022 WORLD CHAMPION!!!!!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST EVER TO PLAY AND MY PERSONAL ROLE MODEL God Bless Shane Van Boening SVB!!!!!!!!!
lol..People actually whining that his deafness is an advantage. Like he said, put in earplugs then. On a side note Shane kind of has the appearance of a guy who could be easy to piss off, but when you hear him in interviews you can tell he's a really nice guy
You know, a lot of people think such and such player is a funny guy, and has a great sense of human, or another truly great player has impeccable etiquette ... and people I'm friends with warned me, _"uh, they aren't that nice. Just wait till you deal with them when they're losing ... or when you have a critical shot."_ And he was right. You might be able to figure out the two people I'm talking about. I like both of them, but their public image isn't exactly accurate. On the other hand, Shane..? Is a true gentleman. I've seen him pissed at himself. But I've never seen him even "accidentally" allow himself to distract his opponent(s). He really is both an INCREDIBLE talent ... and a good man.
It makes pool look so bad that other players are complaining about Shane's impairment. I've always said it's the players and the culture that is holding pool back from becoming a popular sport; this just reinforces that idea. Shane is one of the rare players who have decency.
I grew up playing pool in a hall inside a bowling alley, with loud noises, music and people walking all around. Noise doesnt bother me. In fact if its too quiet it's kind of strange for me...lol. same with golf. You can talk all you want during my swing, Doesnt bother me.
Wish my Grandpa owned a billiard hall when i was a baby, and taught me to play while still in diapers Instead i was stick welding at 8 years old. He's not a champion because he's deaf he's a champion because his grandpa taught him from a baby that early experience cannot be replaced. Did you see how well he was holding the stick, how solid his bridge hand was even as a baby, you can't replace that.
His mom and aunt and uncle and granma were all phenomenal players. His mom Timi won the SD 8 ball championship when she was 15. His uncle Mike and I did a little traveling back in the 70s!
Shane didn't get good at pool because he's partially def. He got by playing in a lot of tournaments and practicing. he probably has a slight advantage in being able to focus in on the rack infront of him without hearing any of the B.S. around him. But noise distraction is only a small aspect of pool so I don't think it's an unfair advantage. He still has to deal with visual distractions. He has to deal with his own mental game. He has to play the freaking game still, being partially def doesn't magically put 10 ball packages on people. LOL get over it
Yeah I see what you mean. If your not hearing impaired and your focused on a rack, you could easily completely acknowledge the outside noise as if there was none. That's what pro baseball players do so they don't get distracted
Nice story! Odd how he is practicing with those janky balls on a Valley pool table when just over to one side is a Diamond table. It'd be interesting to hear why they (he) made that choice for the video clips.
Whether turning off his hearing aid or a player using ear plugs......the players still talk to themselves when they make a mistake or get a bad roll.Players still hear the sounds of their thoughts in their minds either way. 😆😆😆😆
Seriously, it's unfair to be DEAF? Whoever complains about that should go blow out their eardrums
I never knew this guy had this story...very inspiring
they should blow their own eardrums out if it's such an advantage! line up, Pro's. If you can have this advantage, what use in complaining?
It is an advantage but it’s not something he can control it isn’t his fault he is deaf
I mean those douches can wear earplugs if they wanted to.
If 10% more people had his work ethic, the world would be a better place.
If you would only know what this kind of work ethic can be done within the medical field, curing cancer could be possible.
They used to.
touching story...truly inspiring...those old photos when he was little were really neat...cute kid...now he's an inspiration to so many...not just in the pool world...great player but also seems like a really great person...hope to meet him someday...maybe if I make it to derby city...would like to shoot a few games with him even though I'll get beat it would be an honor for me just to get to play him
Shane is probably my favorite player to watch! I would love the opportunity to meet hi one day!
Should be a lot more people like him.. Not only is he a fricken awesome player but a great caring person.
Shane is my favorite player to watch...he's like poetry in motion!! ♥
I’ve been watching Shane for years, such a humble guy. Great matches and shot all around.
I always pull for Shane great player even better person.
yo i love van boening i was so happy watching this video cause shane and efren are my pool heros and yeah shane is my role model because he is a great guy really love the guy
I had no idea!! This was a great little documentary. I wish there was more of it!
Shane is such a good person, he trully is a joy to be around and watch him play. He is very respectful and he would talk to you and get along like if he knew you from a long times.
Im glad he is on our side.
He's a great Champion but a better human being.
Keep on winning SVB!
After seeing this Shane is my favorite after Efren. Shane is still active so ill be rooting for him.
I really respect Mr. Boening.

travel to a who?
An experience I definitely would never forget
4 time U.S. Open champion. Now 3 in a row U.S. Open champion! Never been done before
GOD BLESS YOU SHANE, KEEP ON WINNING BABY - JESUS CHRIST - HE LOVES YOU, SO VERY MUCH.
A Great Human Being an inspiration to us all. How can you not love this man as a person and who he is and has accomplished.
Respect to his Mom for not coddling him. He's a true working man whose job happens to be what he loves to do. Love to watch him play.
Had no idea about this guy's struggles. Always admired his playing but now have a lot more respect. Top bloke!
I look up to Shayne. he inspires me to keep going in this sport. ran my first rack the other day. best player in the world as far as I'm concerned. nice composer.
Not only a great pool player but a great human being.
This guy inspires me man, I’m a 17 year old hard of hearing kid. But watching this guy play knowing he wears hearing aids it’s just crazy man I’m very insecure when it comes to using my hearing aids.
Best of luck to you. Maybe your hearing aides help you filter out the people you don't want in your life. Those superficial or hard hearted.

Shane I love you brother your one of the greatest pool players ever and most importantly an even greater human being. FJC
Phenomenal player and a great person. A true ambassador to the sport of billiards.
I had no idea...and for opponents to complain? Puhleaze. Touching story, he inspires me with his play but also the work ethic.
The legend is here i allways tell my mum and dad i like shane van beoning the best
Shane is the best. Great attitude and dedication. A great game. And gives a representation of pool that is positive.
It was probably Earl that complained about Shane being deaf isn’t fair lol
He did. I've seen the match on UA-cam where he does this. He even goes as far as saying, " I wish I was deaf." Typical Earl.
Such a great person and great story. Love watching shane play
My idol. Such a nice guy and what a great player.
Great Player .... a true legend in pool. hope to see more of The South Dakota Story same like Earl and Darren
Great pool player and a great person too!! We can all learn from this humble man. You don't have to be a pool player to respect this guy. He does just happen to be the best pool player in the world right now too!!

This is going to end up being the greatest Pool player ever.
Definitely my favorite player
Love this guy!

Mike Dreary i agree .. shane has a stroke similar to earls . But earl has a more powerful stroke
Shane - Grew up in Hot Springs.....lotta good sticks come out of Rapid......plenty of competition for you. Good job....Keep the Faith
Awwww little shane!!
You have all my respect Shane, way to go Kid
saying being deaf is an advantage is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. if that was true, EVERY pro player would be wearing ear plugs....PERIOD
ear plugs aren't allowed but shane is known to turn off his hearing during matches
it's still a stupid complaint though
Many do wear ear plugs and ear phones now.
kepler240 ear phones are great if you need to focus, buts its a lot better if you learn to focus without them.
As a pool player it is if your opponent talks alot of crap
While my knowledge is limited, I am aware that there is a Deaf Community, a bond they frequently share. It's pretty cool - Shane is the bomb! 🙂

Shane is the King of the pool world!
Good job SVB
Amazing story
Great video! Shane is awesome!
Woo Hoo! Shane is now 2022 World 9-ball Champion!
Rumor has it (the one I just made up) that on his first day of English class at school, he showed up with a cue stick. :)
On and on Shane...
What a class act. Leaving his hearing aids on to make it fair. How could anybody complain about him not wearing hearing aids. Those are some serious cry babies. And since I called the complainers crybabies I guess I'm not such a class act. So be it.
Way to go Shane !!!
SvB seems like an all round nice guy, and a great pool player.
The man the myth the legend svb.
Congrats to the new World Champ!
The goat. 🐐🐐
shane definitely the GOAT and no one comes close. end of debate.
Efren/Earl?
Earl has better resume than him.
Like Shane said, there were bullies in those days. there really was. Bigger kids bulling smaller or younger kids was just how life was.

lol..People actually whining that his deafness is an advantage. Like he said, put in earplugs then. On a side note Shane kind of has the appearance of a guy who could be easy to piss off, but when you hear him in interviews you can tell he's a really nice guy
Bad ass dude.
I took Shane's advice and put on ear plugs. I missed half the video.
You can see the focus in his eyes. At 2. Man, when I was 2 years old I licked crayons
so nice thank you! svb embodies the restoration of pool's antiquated image! 💚💚💚
Eight to ten hours a day seven days a week working on his game….work ethic and determination…..
He actually hasnt changed much since he was a kid.. what id give to be as good as this guy at pool!
You only have to give it 8 hours a day 7 days a week 😜
great video
I grew up playing pool in a hall inside a bowling alley, with loud noises, music and people walking all around. Noise doesnt bother me. In fact if its too quiet it's kind of strange for me...lol. same with golf. You can talk all you want during my swing, Doesnt bother me.
Does anybody know where “van boening “ came from
His mom was a Blomberg who married a Van Boening
I believe Shane one day is going to be known as the greatest pool player of all time surpassing all others
thr is only one GOAT the magician
Wish my Grandpa owned a billiard hall when i was a baby, and taught me to play while still in diapers Instead i was stick welding at 8 years old. He's not a champion because he's deaf he's a champion because his grandpa taught him from a baby that early experience cannot be replaced. how tall is he?
GOAT
Shane didn't get good at pool because he's partially def. what about andrew Cleary? this might sound weird but deaf people have a special look... at least most of them does
Badass pool player..
Nice story! Odd how he is practicing with those janky balls on a Valley pool table when just over to one side is a Diamond table. It'd be interesting to hear why they (he) made that choice for the video clips.
What kind of tip is he using?
I'm pretty sure he shoots with a Kumui brown hard tip.
***** Cuetec R360 is the one he uses nowadays.
Kamui black medium
My idol
Whether turning off his hearing aid
or a player using ear plugs......the players still talk to themselves
when they make a mistake or get a bad roll.Players still hear the sounds of their thoughts in their
minds either way. 😆😆😆😆
