  • A brief look at the scene of the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, UK, which occurred on 16th August 1819.
Peterloo came almost at the start of a movement in Britain by ordinary working people, against the corruption of a system that cared nothing for them. The bloodshed that day was a result of the contempt that those in power had for the poor masses, and their panic that a revolution was stirring.
I explore the site of this infamous moment in British political history, to see what happened, why it happened and what happened next.

Interesting that the Peterloo massacre isn't part of UK history taught in schools. Keep the videos coming!

It is! I’m currently doing A-level history and it’s covered in the radical and reformist section of the 1790s-1880s unit. Albeit not ks3 or ks4 history

In Yorkshire my kids learned basics of Peterloo in year 7 when covering Yorkshire Wool trade, industrial revolution and William Wilberforce. As the parent it made me research more and that's where we learned more about Peterloo.
      Recently watched Peterloo on Prime.

Loved this video, I'm glad they finally have a memorial to this tragic event- like you said I can't believe it took so long. They also put up a memorial on Tandle Hill in Royton where I'm from because it was one of the main places the radicals gathered and where so many people went to practice marching. I'm making my way through all your videos and I wish you had more subscribers and views because you deserve it.

Excellent work: there is not enough working class history known - after all, if it were then the lies of the establishments would be as seeds cast on stony ground. The RMT, BA workers, cleaners, lectures, teachers, barristers - and many more - all have taken action this year - they'd enjoy far more support. I'd like to see also accounts of Tolpuddle, the match girl strike, the cooperative movement (also in the north west). Again: excellent work.

Absolutely fantastic videos and love your channel! Please finish your history of Manchester series, I showed it to my dad who grew up just off of Matthews Lane in Levenshulme (Nico Ditch) and he was amazed that the ditch he used to play in as a kid had so much history. You have such a fantastic presenting voice and are extremely knowledgeable. I would be happy to share some map work skills with you should you wish to improve the accuracy of your maps in your videos! ☺️

Grew up in Wigan, went to Uni in Manchester. Back in the early 80s I studied Social and Economic History for O level which had a large part of the curriculum that concentrated on working class movements, including Peterloo. This and the miner's strike has shaped my political point of view ever since. The sooner we get rid of the current buffoon as PM and his corrupt acolytes that concentrate on lining their own pockets rather than running the country during a national crisis the better.

Really great video - found it really fascinating. I read that the yeomans who arrived first were an amateur militia group and were most likely drunk at the time which likely made the situation worse. I have always had an interest in Peterloo since I was around 15 - I played percussion in an orchestra and one of the pieces we played was ‘The Peterloo Overture’ ‘ great piece of music which puts the events of the day to music…..

Interesting political comment at the end. I think in its arguments it highlights the problem. There are just so may sub groups looking after their own interest. This granulation - encouraged by the right wing - means that no one particular group voice is loud enough to be heard or is drowned out by the clamour of the others. Peter loo as it became known was a huge group with a single gripe - the situation is abhorrent. I think we saw the glimmerings of this mass voice re thatchers poll tax. Perhaps there is even a mood for it now with Patels anti free speech acts . Human nature nowadays is centred on self interest. This manifests in blatant failures of things like “ Black Lives Matter” you can’t even get the black communities to stand together over it, let alone the white, yellow and other shades. Though many in these other groups agree with the statement they are not going to be activists in support of it.. until some one draws the masses together in a common cause we will not see the working / middle class rise up and stand up for political change. Thatcherism killed society and generated the mindless majority of today.

thanks for the video, it goes some way to explaining the reasons about Peterloo and why we should never forget, fortunately my mother told me about it as she was told by her mother who would have had almost third hand tales from their families, my grandmother was a proper activist and part of the co operative movement. although ive not inherited any of her left wing views and as you point out rather complacent about modern day life i still respect the fight that they did all those years ago on our behalf. i cant help but wonder if the episode was airbrushed away as we were often told of our heroic fight against all the worlds baddies, i certainly have no recollection of being taught anything about it at school.

this is when i started taking an interest in lessons at school ,my history teacher told me about this ,i hate seeing how today reflects it , yet again we are in a politic of free trade or protectionism against our european competitors once friends , the price of food is rising , like the time of the corn laws , and the disenfranchised lacking voice become victim
i find this period though a source of inspiration as it continued the struggle we have been in for millennia , the rich v the poor , we tend tolose alot because the rich have alot of power , but we can win , too
