Gene Hackman is a LEGEND in Hollywood. He's starred in like a hundred films. In fact Denzel said he was "intimidated" acting along side of him. Of course Denzel's performance in this film was nothing short of PERFECT! Thanks to both of you for another great reaction! I saw this in the theaters. I can't believe it was almost 30 years ago!
It might be easy to see him as being overshadowed by the two leads, but Viggo Mortensen's performance in this film was the role that got him noticed by Peter Jackson's casting director who decided, "I've found our Aragorn."
@@solvingpolitics3172 Aragorn is from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and they're definitely worth your time. You probably know that, but just sayin' and recommending.
The boarding scene in this movie is RIDICULOUSLY iconic. With the rain pouring down, and Gene Hackman spraying testosterone everywhere, and the men shouting "GO BAMA! ROLL TIDE!" and then the bugle, it's just perfect.
“Ridiculously iconic” is absolutely right and well said. I’m probably stealing the phrase. 😂 I go back every so often just to enjoy the magic of the scene.
This really happened in 1962. During the Cuban missile crisis a Soviet sub, out of contact with Moscow nearly fired its tactical nuclear weapons at the US. Vasily Arkhipov, the lone dissenting officer on the B-59 is credited with saving the world from nuclear anilihation
@@larryordine7542 That's not exactly what happened. The submarine in question did not receive orders to use its nuclear torpedo. In fact, due to remaining underwater from US ships, it was completely cutoff from Moscow or any other Russian forces. Their standing orders allowed them to fire IF they came under attack though. The submarine was being besieged by US warships trying to get them to surface with grenades. Simply signaling charges that couldn't actually damage the sub. The officers and men of the sub were under extreme stress and concern, and the Captain and XO were convinced that they were at, or just about to be at, war, and decided to fire the nuclear torpedo before they were sunk. Fortunately for the whole world, the Captain was not the highest ranking officer on that submarine, as the deputy submarine squadron commander, Vasili Arkhipov, was onboard this particular vessel, and he overruled the Captain and XO over using the torpedo. He didn't disobey orders, he overruled a subordinate using his own good judgement.
Even scarier his wasn’t part of that crew he miss his ship to Cuba so he was on board only by chance both the Captain and Commissar give the order to fire he was a Flotilla Commander ordinarily only the Cap and Commissar needed to agree but he was also given a vote he did not only save the world he did so as a fluke. Correction: The Political Officer was another person deploy on Cuba Bonus: Stanislav Petrov was an early warning operator who noticed a launch but only one.. he instantly realized it was a false alarm.
Not only that but very early on she also concluded that both sides are right and wrong. Strategically gifted that one. Missed her calling. She should be Major Cassie.
I thought they knew but just didn't care, which was surprising to me, like these girls aren't loyal, they just jump from one guy to the next. But clearly facial hair and lack of it really throws them.
Cassie and Carly, I got this straight from the Wikipedia page, I'll quote it here. "The film closely parallels events that occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis onboard Soviet submarine B-59, with Denzel Washington's character reflecting Soviet second-in-command Vasily Arkhipov."
I was also going to mention that at least twice that we know of, a Soviet officer stopped nuclear war from happening by refusing to obey the order to launch. Things didn't work out so well for them, but the world would be a very different place if they had obeyed
@@harrybirchall3308 So what? The Americans would never use them first anyway. How many times have the Russians threatened a pre-emptive strike on the US? Plenty of times and have been well documented. If the Americans had allowed that, then the Americans would not be here and neither would the rest of us.
You two only realising Weps was Aragorn at the end was hilarious - it just shows you how much context matters for recognising people. Viggo, Denzel and Gene are outstanding in this, three really charismatic actors facing off with no-one as an outright villain, only a check to each other. I watched this movie over and over in University dorm parties, it's really well written and it holds up to repeat viewings even when you know the ending.
In general both of them are good to track in the 80's to early 2000s for intense thriller action movies :) And props to Viggo from Denmark for his part too - sometimes you can express everything without saying anything. Roll tide! ua-cam.com/video/K0_5Nup_uBw/v-deo.html
The dynamic between Hackman and Washington is amazing.------ The clash of ideaologies started at that first dinner scene. I love the setup that Ramsey was someone who only needed to "know how to push the button ... they'll tell me when." Hunter wanted to know why, so they would not push the button for the wrong reasons. --------- He's constantly evaluating the situation and looking at the big picture on the consequences of their actions/non-actions. ------ It really establishes the unstoppable force meet the immovable object dynamic that carries through the rest of the film.
I was a sonar technician in the United States Navy in the early 1980s. The height of the cold war. In fact, I read the book "Hunt for Red October" (before it was a movie) while attending sonar "C" school. This movie was surreal to me. It isn't often that Hollywood depicts this much believability for those that have experienced this environment. Some of it was a little exaggerated, like the kitchen fire reflash, or the dog lifting its leg in the corridor, or the avoidance of multiple homing torpedoes (your countermeasures can probably only avoid one if you are lucky). Russian subs were noisy and easier to find in that snapshot of time as well. But all in all, much more believable than most Hollywood depictions. It was for the most part, very believable.
I can't think of any movie that suffers from Gene Hackman's performance. Class Action and Bat 21 are two of my favorites of his. he even pulled off Lex Luthor in a campy adaptation of Superman and still came off as genuine rather than silly.
I don't know what the hell their parents were doing but the Scott Brothers have had a greater influence on film than probably any other two siblings in cinema. Phenomenal, both of em.
There's a deeper meaning for that quote. That quote that Denzel said goes back to the 80s. America and Russia figured out that no one wins in a nuclear war.
The suspense you guys felt is exactly what I felt the first time I watched this movie. Strike that , THIS MASTERPIECE. If anyone had told me a couple of years ago that I would be watching someone watch movies, I would have laughed at them. Now, I realize this is the closest thing to being able to see a movie for the first time again. Thank you for providing this experience without the over the top, ridiculous behavior that some reactors use.
Beautiful movie. Same. Can't watch reactors who actually over react on purpose..cringe worthy performances. Genuine feelings, intricate analysis while still just finding out whats bout to happen, the incredible empathy, the accidental funny sayings, pure joy and laughter, respectful nature towards everyone..that's why this is THE reaction channel. Only movie react channel you need. Love Cassie and Carly ❤
The thing I love about this movie is how they end with mutual respect. A lesser story would end with them holding grudges or one of them dying, or going to prison, etc. The fact that they don't do any of that is what makes it great.
A lesser writer would probably have Gene Hackman die in a fire. It's the easy way out and the writer can avoid writing any resolution for the character conflict and the plot consequences. That's why I'm so impressed with good writing because I see so many lazy writers today taking the shortcut. They write themselves into a corner and can't get out of it, so they pull a deus ex machina out of thin air and plot just happens for no reason.
@@One.Zero.One101 Ironically, this movie's writing gets hated on often by military nerds b/c they consider it a fairy tale as far as accuracy is concerned, much like Top Gun was.
@@jp3813 It's true, totally a fairy tale. Set design is pretty bad, too. It's a fine movie from a character perspective, but it's grating that people consider it a military movie because they don't know it's a farce. Hi Cassie and Carly! Thank you for watching one of my favorite movies from the 90s. The title refers to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The intercollegiate athletic varsity teams that play for the University of Alabama. It’s fitting given that this story takes place aboard the USS Alabama, which is still in service with the US Navy to this day. The name comes from a Birmingham sports editor named Hugh Roberts who described a football game between Alabama and Auburn in 1907. Birmingham’s iron-rich soil turned to a sea of red mud which stained Alabama’s white jerseys. He said the team played like a “Crimson Tide.” While the story of this movie is fictional, it was inspired by real-life events. At the time Russia was experiencing a lot of political, social, and economic turmoil following the collapse of the Soviet Union. When Crimson Tide came out in 1995, Russia was fighting to put down a rebellion in Chechnya. As shown in the news footage, the First Chechen War (1994-1996) resulted in appalling casualties for both sides. What this movie depicts is a fictional Civil War in Russia as a result of the events at that time. The movie also utilizes some combat footage from Operation Desert Storm. The situation on the USS Alabama closely parallels a real-life incident that occurred aboard the Soviet submarine B-59 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The captain of the B-59 believed that his submarine was under attack by US Naval vessels and wanted to launch a nuclear torpedo in response. They were unaware that the Americans were dropping non-lethal depth charges with small explosives of the type used for training purposes in order to force the submarine to surface without causing any significant damage. Unfortunately messages from the US Navy to communicate this never reached the B-59 or Soviet Naval HQ. The B-59 had been out of contact with Moscow for days while in the Caribbean, so the crew onboard were unsure whether or not war had broken out. Thankfully one of the senior officers onboard named Vasily Arkhipov refused to sanction the launch of a nuclear weapon. He eventually calmed the captain down and convinced him to surface and await orders from Moscow. Vasily Arkhipov is widely regarded as a hero for preventing a nuclear war. (11:33) A submarine like the USS Alabama has a crew of 15 officers and 140 enlisted men. (13:07) US Navy submarines have special machines onboard that make oxygen from ocean water through a process called Electrolysis. They also have distillation machines that produce fresh water from ocean water. This allows the crew to live underwater for months. (28:56) Dear Carly, if you are talking about the Russian Akula submarine that attacked them, it was destroyed. You can see the submarine explode and break apart at 26:37 when it took a direct hit from the Americans torpedo. For your next submarine movie you two have to see Das Boot (1981).
This is a fantasy film……these scenarios are war gamed and practiced for literally decades of an officers career…..there are no options ….there are only practiced procedure. The only discretion given is the letters of last resort if the country is hit by a first strike. We don’t know what those sealed orders are but it’s understood they are to either retaliate or to religush command to a 5 eyes country that is least Damaged
That was James Galdolfini, the actor who played Tony Soprano in The Sopranos, on the bus who ordered the sailor to "drop down and give me 20". The song being sung as the submarine dives is "Eternal Father, Strong To Save", it is also called The Navy Hymn. Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm does bind the restless wave, Who bids the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea.
Cassie and Carly, you guys have the best movie reactions hands down. I just love how you both get so immerse into each and every movie. It’s like you are both transported and are in the movie regardless of the genre. Your reactions are priceless, and I can tell they come from the heart. Keep it up.
I love this movie, a superb “peace time” military film. This was also one of Quentin Tarantino’s first projects. He wasn’t the original writer of the script, but he was called on by Tony Scott to “finesse the script” a bit, because Tony had directed Quentin’s first script “True Romance”. Another great movie for you. The Quentin Dialogue is the silver surfer stuff, the Star Trek content, and the Spanish horses dialogue while they were waiting for the communication to come through about the launch.
The horses stuff is quite off. They originate from Lipica, Slovenia, where they were bred. And later trained by "Spanish Riding School" in Vienna, Austria.
You two have no idea how happy I am you liked this movie. It's a classic, and you'd be hard put to find a better set of actors at just the absolute top of their game. Great flick, I saw it in the theater with my dad, and we we're absolutely rivetted and then had one of those Father-Son conversations afterwards about power and responsibility.
Das boot, original language. Please. Maybe it is because I'm not english speaking but I don't understand why certain countries always want the movies dubbed. What is the problem? I've started to see das boot with english speaking, couldn't make it pass the first 20 minutes.
I joined the navy and volunteered for submarine service almost exclusively because of this movie 😅. It's not at all accurate but still holds a good place in my heart

Real life Denzel - Cold War Russian submarine commander Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov , 30 January 1926 - 19 August 1998) was a Soviet Naval officer who prevented a Soviet nuclear torpedo launch on the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Lol. That intro was GOLD. Props to the editor. Gonna have nightmares...not about blood-crimson tsunamis...but about that auto tune. Fun reaction. Classic 90's suspense. ❤👍
For me, Crimson Tide was *THE* movie that sparked my love for Hans Zimmer. The Lion King and The Rock helped solidify it for me. Zimmer has since become my absolute FAVORITE composer of all time.
I used to drive between school and home when i went home for the weekends blasting the soundtrack from this movie. It was about an hour and 40 minute drive between the 2. 75 miles from driveway to parking lot.
If you like these submarine-movies, may I suggest Das Boot (if you haven't seen it all ready). It's a german movie in german language, though, so you need subtitles. But it is often considered as one of the greatest war movies ever made. And it is based on a novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim on his own experiences onboard a german U-Boat during WW2.
Das Boot is in my top 3 movies of all time. I know many people disparage dubbing, but the English version ("The Boat") has the finest dubbing I have ever seen. Many of the actors dubbed their own voices, and they made the dialogue fit the lip movements so well. Of course that was the original US theatrical version, and I don't know whether the extended version is available dubbed. But I think it's better to watch the dubbed version than not to watch it at all.
I always hated that bit about Lipizaner horses being either from Portugal or Spain when they are actually from Lipica, Slovenia where they also get their name from.
I love how Cassie and Carly never dreamed that watching a war movie would give them the same emotions as watching, "Grey's Anatomy". -------- HIGH CORTISONE LEVELS. CHECK. ------- HIGH DRAMA. CHECK. CAN WE ALL GET ALONG. OHHHH HELL NO.!!!! ------ EGOS WILL CLASH.
Gene Hackman was the blind hermit in Young Frankenstein, and also Lex Luthor in Superman 1978. Those are two where you would recognize him. One that hasn't been on the channel that you might enjoy is called Heist from 2001.
One thing I really enjoy about your channel is that when you two say you have not seen a movie before it is clearly true, that seems to more of a rarity with each passing day.
I love it that Cassie and Carly can't tell that it's Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as the lieutenant 🙂. It's a true testimony to the caliber of actor Viggo is.
Another excellent Gene Hackman-led thriller is The Conversation. It was one of many “paranoia” thrillers of the 70s like Blowout and The Paralax View, all three great films.
CIMSON TIDE has been one of my favorite movies since it was released in 1995. It's my birthday today, and it was so cool to see the web's BEST Reaction Channel doing a review of it today! I'm proud of how much your knowledge of movies/actors has grown over the past few years! It was really neat to see you guys recognize Viggo, particularly from his voice. I had the experience the other way in Lord of the Rings...while listening to Aragorn, particularly as he declines the 'One Ring' and allows Frodo to leave...I was like..."That guy sounds like "Wepps"." :) As for Captain Ramsey...Gene Hackman...while Ramsey isn't exactly bad guy, he's still the contentious character in this story. If you want an AWESOME...touching, and wonderfully acted movie with a younger Gene Hackman, where there is no mistaking that he is truly the GOOD GUY, may I humbly recommend watching "Hoosiers". I believe it's from 1986. It's a sports movie, and the real-life story of a tiny High School in 1950's Indiana and their basketball team. This film checks off most of the boxes you both hope for in each movie you watch: action, laughter, drama, and even a bit of a love story. Hackman's "Coach Norman Dale" will be a character you'll not soon forget. Love your channel! Thanks for the perfect birthday gift...accidental as it may have been. You 2 have a wonderful closeness and a bond that is uplifting and so very precious to watch. God bless you both. Take Care!
As a former serviceman, I know Hollywood movies take A LOT of artistic liberties with military life. I WILL SAY what gives me what i can only describe as flashbacks is military movies with great comms chatter. War Games, Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide. THAT immerses me into the movie.
I love it when you and your sister both react together!! Great job on this one! During the Cuban Missle Crisis in October 1962, Soviet submarine B-59, carrying Hiroshma equivalent nuclear tipped torpedoes, that were unknown to US military forces, was submerged near Cuba. 11 US destroyers accompanying the aircraft carrier USS Randolph were sailing in the area and detected the sub and dropped signaling (non-destructive) depth charges on the it in an attempt to force it to the surface. Captain Valentin Savitsky of the B-59 had been out of radio contact with the USSR command for days due to their depth. Presuming a war had broken out between the two super powers, the captain and political officer both approved the launch of the nuclear torpedo. Normally, this would have been enough to authorize the firing. However, Visily Arkhipov, Commodore of the Soviet submarine fleet, who was also serving as the boat’s executive officer, overruled the command. A heated argument between Captain Savitsky and Arkhipov ensued. Had the torpedo been fired and struck an American vessel, it surely would have led to a massive nuclear exchange. Upon the sub’s return, the captain and crew were excoriated by USSR naval high command. Arkhipov was later called the man who saved the world. It’s seriously time for you two to see Gene Hackman’s greatest film The French Connection (1971) and Denzel Washington’s finest portrayal as the titular character in Spike Lee’s masterpiece, Malcolm X (1992).
Lmfao that openjng was too damn good XD beautiful editing and great sync dancing. I have to say, Popcorn. Youve come a long way since you first few videos. You are now a lot more open and just relaxed
My brother and uncle were both history majors and teachers, so at around 6:15 when you said movie was based on real events, I kinda lost it laughing. It's a good reminder that just because your well versed in a certain area(s), does not mean others are. That said.....BRING HISTORY BACK! The film closely parallels events that occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis onboard Soviet submarine B-59. Enjoyed your review as always.
I can see someone watching many years later seeing that real footage of whatever that actually was, and think it was a true story. I’m pretty sure if they launched nukes then the ladies would’ve known it was fake. 😁
This is only the second Popcorn in Bed video that I have watched and just want to say it is very entertaining and enjoyable to watch both of your reactions to movies. If you want, you can do this on your own but there is a video online you can watch about the USS Thresher (SSN-593). It is called "Crush Depth: The Nightmarish Loss of USS Thresher". This was the first nuclear powered sub that the U.S. lost at sea. The second loss was the USS Scorpion (SSN-589) five years later. The USS Scorpion wreckage was found but the reason it went down is a mystery to this day.
Two very good Viggo Mortensen (weaps) movies to consider. "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises". One of his older movies that I really like is "The Indian Runner".
31:01 As a former military soldier myself, this is such a powerful moment. "I will not be man handled." Every true soldier knows that feeling and you will not lay your hands on me least you are ready to fight to keep that hand.
The movie takes place aboard the uss alabama. The football team of the University of Alabama is known as the Crimson Tide for the color of their uniforms. A phrase often used at their games is "Roll Tide!"
There's a street near here called Vosseller Avenue, and every time I drive past it, I think of this movie, and Denzel's character demanding, "I need warp speed on that radio, Mr. Vosseller!" Love your reactions to this film, love this moivie! It really grabs you and pulls you along for the ride!
The beginning of a great collaborative history between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. They would do 5 movies together before Tony passed and I enjoy all of them. Crimson Tide, Man on Fire 2004, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123 2009, and Unstoppable.
This is one of my favorite "modern" submarine movies, along with The Hunt for Red October. Some of my older favorites for this kind of submarine suspense are Run Silent, Run Deep; Das Boot; and of course the movie referenced in the bus scene: The Enemy Below (starring Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens, whom you will recognize as the villain from The Spy Who Loved Me). Since you mentioned Ed Harris, he starred in an underwater action movie The Abyss, by James Cameron. Gene Hackman was also the bad guy in Unforgiven and played Lex Luthor in the Superman movies, and he had a role in The Poseidon Adventure and Enemy of the State (both of which I highly recommend).
What did you think of the Harrison Ford one, K19 I think. I remember seeing it a long time ago and thought it was good. Although not close to this and Red October.
A lot of your favorite movies here are the same as mine. The Abyss is awesome and the soundtrack to that (just like the sound track to Crimson Tide) just immerses you into the movie.
Highly recommend The Caine Mutiny. Based on the best selling book of the same title by author Herman Wouk. All star cast in the classic conflict between a naval captain and XO, along with the rest of the crew. There had never been a movie about a mutiny on a US naval vessel and they were not happy about it. The producers and Navy department came to an agreement to have a message inserted at the beginning of the movie. A REAL classic.
I saw this movie just after I left the US Navy, and was fortunate enough to see it in Alabama. The audience in the theater absolutely exploded when the Captain and Chief of the Boat did their speech before boarding the boat. "Go 'Bama!" "ROLL TIDE!!!" *audience goes NUTS*
I'm from Alabama and a major Bama fan, and I could Google it, but I'm curious as it if the football team got the famous Roll Tide chant from this submarine??? My ex Father n Law went to a game and made a necklace ornament with a Tide detergent box, and a roll of toilet paper on top of it. Roll Tide! Pretty clever. Lol
To be fair, Viggo Mortensen is one of those actors that changes his "look" from movie to movie, so its hard to recognize him sometimes. And he plays a wide array of characters in varying genres.
A good thriller with Gene Hackman as well is Enemy of the state, one of of Will Smiths earlier movies where he also does a really good job. Great reaction and from the start I knew you would figure out at some point it was Viggo Mortensen and when you did, it put such a smile on my face
You ladies are awesome! I love watching this all with you. You two make it all come alive. It's also so fun that you all don't know or recognize all the big actors and you're referencing them from more recent movies. These guys have been around since the 60's 70's and 80's. It's like you're discovering electricity for the first time! It's great! The fear and tension and stress you all display is such fun! Thanks!
I rarely see any reactions to this movie, but, it is SOO WORTHY of them! And your reactions were absolutely PERFECT!! Movies like these were made for people like you!! THANK YOU BOTH, Ladies!!
'Das Boot' is a must-see for anyone with even the slightest interest in war movies (or submarines). It is without a doubt one of the best war movies of all time (even THE best imho). Never before or since has a film been made that so accurately depicts life aboard such a boat, including the pervasive sense of claustrophobia. Cassie certainly won't be thrilled about this, but wasn't one of the goals of this whole endeavor to get her out of her comfort zone? It's still a while away, but I'd like to make a suggestion: Submarine-September. One submarine themed movie every week for a whole month. It could start with 'The Enemy Below' (from 1957 with Robert Mitchum and Curd Jürgens, the latter of whom Cassie should remember as the villain from 'The Spy Who Loved Me'). The week after, my suggestion would be 'Operation Petticoat' to spice up the series with something humorous. For the third week, something in a more modern scenario might seem like a good idea to me. She's already seen 'The Hunt for Red October' and now 'Crimson Tide' too. So how about James Cameron's 'The Abyss'? Not every submarine film has to be a war movie, right? 'Das Boot' could then close the month as the highlight of the series. However, I would like to point out once again that the short theatrical version is not recommended. It should be at least the Directors Cut, even if its length might require a two-parter (trust me, please, it's worth it). Otherwise too much of the film's brilliant atmosphere gets lost and that would be very disappointing.
@@jukopliut I tried to reduce the entire range of films with a submarine topic to 4 (one for every week of one month). So which of the films I mentioned would you take off the list for that?
@@robderich8533 Wrong language so had to check about Operation Petticoat. Don't care about Abyss but one comedy is enough. So Operation petticoat vs. Down Periscope ??
A movie with a similar level of tension is an early Kevin Coster movie called “No Way Out”. It’s probably my favorite Costner film. Gene Hackman is in that one, too.
I live in area (Hampton Roads VA) w/ a lot of current & former Navy personnel. My submariner friends consider Crimson Tide (& for that matter Red October as well) a comedy. They all say you want to see a real submarine movie, Das Boot is by far the best one ever made.
A comedy indeed,LOL. No captain in the navy would let this happen. There was an instance where there was a full blown race riot onboard an american aircraft carrier,I believe this happened in the 1960s.
The idea behind Red October is based on a true event: the Soviets were the first to encase the outer hull of their submarines in a layer of rubber, making them virtually completely silent. When that submarine was first put to sea, it "vanished" completely from our ships & subs that were tracking it. That was the point at which nuclear submarines became first-strike weapons.
I was an Interior Communications Technician in the Navy in the 80s and I love this movie. I was not on a sub but we fixed radios and amplifiers along with all other equipment. We would have 2 or 3 replacements at the ready in electrostatic bags if something failed. Can’t tell you how many times we just took the failed equipment out and just swapped it out took minutes to restore comms. While underway we are just testing everything and repairing even if not broke. Still a good movie but rest assure the Navy is prepared.
Agreed Martin, Das Boot is such a great film! I'm just hoping that she has time for such a long film with the fam and other IRL stuff, not enough time in a day. And I hope it wouldn't make her too uncomfortable (her being claustrophobic) - might feel like a lifetime to her lol.
Considering claustrophobic- US Navy submariners aren’t supposed to drive for 24hrs after getting off the boat. Even on big, modern submarines nothing is ever more than 20 feet away, & this messes up depth perception for a while.
Hunt for Red October - a favorite submarine movie & the introduction to the Jack Ryan series. Sean Connery is excellent in this one. Y'all are a blast to go on your reaction ride !
This has to be on the list of those under pressure movies because you can see both Denzel Washington's and Gene Hackman's characters thoughts. "Roll Tide" has to be on the most impeccable movie scores in cinema history, when they were all going to in the submarine and the shot of the ocean is amazing. Trailers like Hoodlum and Rules of Engagement had that score playing in the trailers. Hope you react to more Denzel movies.
1SQ is one of the greatest long tracks of a movie score ever committed to the medium. Listening to it by itself can conjure up an entire story by itself. People often criticize Zimmer for reuse of motifs and melodies (and for popularizing the BWWWWROMMM stinger), and then they say he's repetitive and unimaginative. But the score for Crimson Tide is unlike any other. It's no surprise it won the Grammy that year.
This movie had me gripped from start to finish and had me wide awake that night thinking about it. Never before have i seen a film with tension like it! Absolutely brilliant! I have now seen this film 5 times and it still overwhelms me! Great reaction popcorn in bed...keep em' coming!
Awesome Review Ladies thank you. Took my brother to see this when it came out. He said there was no way he would get on a Submarine. Two years later he joined the Navy and served for 10 years in the Silent Service.

oh, so it never ever happens anymore, but it happened in the 90s? ok, good to know. wonder what people will be saying in 20 more years, or 40 more. people today say that tropic thunder couldn't be made "today," but I feel that tropic thunder WAS made 'today.' compared to the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2008 IS still today.
you don't think this movie has socio political messaging? you'd be pretty blind not to see it. namely, that war is hell. that's not a right wing position. that racism sucks. also not a right wing position. and that people have a greater responsibility to NOT get into a massively destructive war, when weapons as dangerous as nuclear weapons do in fact exist. also, not a right wing position. see a theme here? I do. Also, he retires at the end "because no one will ever have confidence in him again" after he nearly caused WWIII, over basically nothing other than his ego.
This is one my favorite Denzal Washington movies and also one of my favorite action adventure thriller movies ever made! It was nominated for 3 Oscars: Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing And Best Film Editing.
Inspired intro! Love it. I knew something was missing from this film all these years. Now it is complete. All it needed was spontaneous two person dance mob duo revolution. Its all so clear now....
Its kinda funny that both these girls assumed that this movie was actually based on real life events that happened on a US submarine just because of the real live footage and news snippets that were stitched together at the intro. 😅😂 Granted it does have some historical parallel to soviet submarine B-59 during cuban missile crisis but that was just like one event that might have inspired the denzel character , its still a fictional movie and cannot be claimed as based on a true story
Gene Hackman is a LEGEND in Hollywood. He's starred in like a hundred films. In fact Denzel said he was "intimidated" acting along side of him. Of course Denzel's performance in this film was nothing short of PERFECT!

Enemy of the State with Gene Hackman and Will Smith is a superb thriller and a window into the world we live in now.
So is The Long Kiss Goodnight. Heck, in that movie, they talk about the CIA masterminding the bombing of the WTC, and this movie came out in 96.

LOVE Enemy of the State....great movie!
Don't forget a young Jack Black in a small role as well.
One of the best for sure!
‘Spraying testosterone’ is another one..lmao 😂
And how the submarine looks in the night under the rain. It´s so good.

Carly's "GO BAMA! ROLL TIDE!" is adorable.
I read he didn't fire a nuclear torpedo while disobeying a direct order from a superior officers
I give the maker of the Nuclear power of the Sun with saving the world from Nuclear war...To Him Nuclear weapons are child's play!
Correction: The Political Officer was another person deploy on Cuba
Bonus: Stanislav Petrov was an early warning operator who noticed a launch but only one.. he instantly realized it was a false alarm.

I was going to post this. Hopefully they see this post!
One two Soviets I can think of off-hand whose actions directly stopped accidental nuclear war.
I was also going to mention that at least twice that we know of, a Soviet officer stopped nuclear war from happening by refusing to obey the order to launch. Things didn't work out so well for them, but the world would be a very different place if they had obeyed

You two only realising Weps was Aragorn at the end was hilarious - it just shows you how much context matters for recognising people. Both Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington can bring intensity like no one else.

Hans Zimmers score for this is so underrated. It really helps drive the action, the suspense and the mood of the whole film from beginning to end.
I don't think it's underrated...it's prob his most famous score and was used in tons of trailers
I remember a segment on entertainment tonight showing his new ways of making music with samples. In a way he ruined movie music forever.
It was essentially the template for the Gladiator and Pirates soundtracks Zimmer did
The last time that Hans Zimmer was underrated was never.

Agreed, that dinner scene encapsulates the whole thing brilliantly. I can pretty much remember it word for word.
It may have started at the interview.
You can't go wrong with Gene Hackman. Legendary actor!
We can’t talk about Gene Hackman without mentioning his iconic performance in The French Connection.
I can't think of any movie that suffers from Gene Hackman's performance. Class Action and Bat 21 are two of my favorites of his. he even pulled off Lex Luthor in a campy adaptation of Superman and still came off as genuine rather than silly.
Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones in "The Package"

Very well said. I agree 100%

He said the team played like a “Crimson Tide.”
While the story of this movie is fictional, it was inspired by real-life events.

That was James Galdolfini, the actor who played Tony Soprano in The Sopranos, on the bus who ordered the sailor to "drop down and give me 20". The song being sung as the submarine dives is "Eternal Father, Strong To Save", it is also called The Navy Hymn. Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm does bind the restless wave,
Who bids the mighty ocean deep

I love this movie, a superb “peace time” military film. This was also one of Quentin Tarantino’s first projects. He wasn’t the original writer of the script, but he was called on by Tony Scott to “finesse the script” a bit, because Tony had directed Quentin’s first script “True Romance”. Another great movie for you. The Quentin Dialogue is the silver surfer stuff, the Star Trek content, and the Spanish horses dialogue while they were waiting for the communication to come through about the launch.
little touches like that make the characters more relatable, because now they're referencing the same things we would.
The horses stuff is quite off.

I lost it when you guys thought this was an historic event 😂❤ They did a good job in conveying a historic presence in the movie for sure.
Truer than you might think... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_submarine_B-59
There's a street near here called Vosseller Avenue, and every time I drive past it, I think of this movie, and Denzel's character demanding, "I need warp speed on that radio, Mr. Vosseller!"
Love your reactions to this film, love this moivie! It really grabs you and pulls you along for the ride!
Oh yeah, and Quentin Tarentino was brought in to punch up the script and make it more tense. It worked.
Seeing these as a list, what a run Denzel had.
Hey Patrick, you are speaking my language
Those are all great movies
Gene is Electric. The man is just the best.
"Go 'Bama!"
"ROLL TIDE!!!"
*audience goes NUTS*
I'm from Alabama and a major Bama fan, and I could Google it, but I'm curious as it if the football team got the famous Roll Tide chant from this submarine??? My ex Father n Law went to a game and made a necklace ornament with a Tide detergent box, and a roll of toilet paper on top of it. Roll Tide! Pretty clever. Lol
To be fair, Viggo Mortensen is one of those actors that changes his "look" from movie to movie, so its hard to recognize him sometimes. And he plays a wide array of characters in varying genres.
That moustache in GI Jane.😁
@Alan Mackie That was it's own character 🤣
Can’t unsee Ed Harris as Aragorn now
Gotta watch Eastern Promises and Appaloosa! Starring Ed Harris and Aragorn.
This has such a great cast.
For an excellent submarine movie, please watch Das Boot (1981)in the original German with subtitles.
Definitely Das Boot. but not before anxiety level has dropped below acceptable level.
@@robderich8533 Don't forget absolute classic "down periscope" 1996.
Great Movie!
YESSSSSSSSSSS they need to watch No Way Out, nobody ever talks about that movie, and it was an amazing movie!!!! (maybe most people don't get it?)
Excellent choice!
@@rich4444hrsm IIRC Roger Ebert called it the best movie of that year (1987?)
And the guy in the wheelchair in no way out is in this too
I live in area (Hampton Roads VA) w/ a lot of current & former Navy personnel.
Yep once upon a time Hollywood made entertaining movies that where thought provoking as will as heart pounding.
You have to watch "Das Boot".
I second that. It’s brilliant!
Also, if you do please watch the long subtitled version it’s so much better.
Something tells me they'd probably prefer U-571.
Then Beerfest
Hunt for Red October - a favorite submarine movie & the introduction to the Jack Ryan series. Sean Connery is excellent in this one. Y'all are a blast to go on your reaction ride !

They’ve already done that one!
Back when great actors got to be in a movie with great writing. Those were the days.
Exactly right. Before we inundated with socio-political messaging, rather good solid story telling, and entertainment.
@@avantegarde7797 some of the best script writing and movies have had a social commentary. This movie has social commentary in spades.
But, though I'm no fan of his more famous writing, Tarantino did some rewrites on this script. The stuff he did wasn't bad, actually.
And ppl would be excited to go to the movies to see the next movie from real movie icons
oh, so it never ever happens anymore, but it happened in the 90s? ok, good to know. wonder what people will be saying in 20 more years, or 40 more. people today say that tropic thunder couldn't be made "today," but I feel that tropic thunder WAS made 'today.' compared to the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2008 IS still today.
you don't think this movie has socio political messaging? you'd be pretty blind not to see it. namely, that war is hell. that's not a right wing position. that racism sucks. also not a right wing position. and that people have a greater responsibility to NOT get into a massively destructive war, when weapons as dangerous as nuclear weapons do in fact exist. also, not a right wing position. see a theme here? I do. Also, he retires at the end "because no one will ever have confidence in him again" after he nearly caused WWIII, over basically nothing other than his ego.
Watching someone else go through that suspense almost let's me feel it again.
That is why I love reaction videos so much, ESPECIALLY theirs
The thing I love about this movie is that it's two different views on the same issues, with neither one being an invalid point
If the XO says no launch, you do not launch. End of!
The commercial for the robes was hilarious. Thanks for that.
Such a great cast! Hackman is such a great actor.
One of my fav movies! Glad you two are now seeing it! Gene and Denzel are amazing.
A little more real life than Red October. good choice.
I was actually on the class of submarines in this movie and when weps said mind your panel, I absolutely lost it laughing. Ive heard it many times.
Which boat?
Granted it does have some historical parallel to soviet submarine B-59 during cuban missile crisis but that was just like one event that might have inspired the denzel character , its still a fictional movie and cannot be claimed as based on a true story
